Blu-Ray Review: ‘Bruno’ Lacks Freshness, But Delivers Plentiful Laughs

17 November 2009 9:30 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – “Fearless” is the best way to describe the comedy of Sacha Baron Cohen. People who find his humor too vulgar and over-the-top have missed the point. Cohen’s goal is to be as vulgar and over-the-top as humanly possible.

Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0

I’m reminded of Mel Brooks’ oft-quoted quip, “My movies rise below vulgarity.” His comic personas are deliberately outrageous caricatures that seem to have been spawned directly from conservative America’s fear of the “other” (whether it be a homosexual or a Khazakistanian). When Cohen plunks his fictional creations into real-world situations alongside unsuspecting citizens, the results range from “Candid Camera”-style shock gags to brilliant evocations of repressed prejudices. At his best, Cohen is a triumphant champion of tolerance. He’s like Mel Brooks, Norman Lear and Peter Sellers all in one side-splitting package, and his package has never acquired more screen time than it does in “Bruno. »

Sacha Baron Cohen to Play an Ambulance-Chaser Fighting for Justice

6 November 2009 3:35 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

We wouldn't call Borat and Bruno full-fledged documentaries, since the title characters were fictional extensions of Sacha Baron Cohen's twisted psyche. Nevertheless, the movies' antics were steeped in reality, creating a kind of pseudo-vérité.

But now, it appears that Cohen has decided to abandon the candid-camera shtick altogether. Variety writes that the 38-year-old British comedian has founded his own production company, Four By Two Films, and will go to work producing a new fictional project scripted by Peter Baynham.

Accidentes will tell the story of an "ambulance-chasing personal injury attorney of Latin descent" (played by Cohen) who helps a poor immigrant with a case against his wealthy employer. Ambulance-chasing, huh? We'll be interested to see what that means.

Cohen struck a deal with Universal for Accidentes and also got Columbia to commit to another starring vehicle. Cohen will script that project, as yet untitled, with Baynham, Anthony Hines, and Dan Mazer, »

Bruno Review

12 July 2009 9:23 PM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Bruno Directed by: Larry Charles Written by: Sacha Baron Cohen, Anthony Hines, Dan Mazer, Jeff Schaffer Starring: Sacha Baron Cohen, Gustaf Hammarsten In 2006, British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen took America by storm with the release of his feature film Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan. Borat was one of three characters he had been developing over the past 10 or so years, which eventually gained mainstream attention on Da Ali G Show. The movie ended up taking over $260 million worldwide, but was followed with controversy, lawsuits and a backlash, leading many people to wonder if a follow up film would even be feasible, let alone profitable. Cohen's response is an even more outrageous movie based around another one of his alter-egos, the gay Austrian fashion critic Bruno. Drawing from his own experiences working briefly as a model out of university, he simultaneously skewers the fashion »

Brüno

10 July 2009 10:00 AM, PDT | Pastemagazine.com | See recent PasteMagazine news »

Release Date: July 10

Director: Larry Charles

Writers: Sacha Baron Cohen, Anthony Hines, Dan Mazer, Jeff Schaffer

Starring: Sacha Baron Cohen, Gustaf Hammarsten

Cinematographer: Anthony Hardwick, Wolfgang Held

Studio/Run Time: Üniversal Pictures, 83 mins.

Brüno is sharper, funnier, and more profane than Borat. Thank goodness.

Let’s get this clear right at the top: anyone who thought Borat was crass and unfunny would do well to stay away from the new film called Brüno by Sacha Baron Cohen and Larry Charles. The British comedian known for disappearing completely into his faux naïve characters has a new personality but the same strategy: Break the rules of decorum while the cameras are rolling to see how people react. His tactics as a flamboyantly gay, highly sexed fashion maven are even more brusquely offensive to genteel sensibilities than his Kazakh rube was. Delicate souls should steer clear. »

"Brüno" vs. "Ice Age" - The Box Office Weekend Ahead.

10 July 2009 1:07 AM, PDT | Movie Jungle | See recent Movie Jungle news »

Universal Pictures' eagerly anticipated "Brüno" unspools into 2,755 venues, looking to capitalize on its first weekend prior to the opening of Warner's massive "Harry Potter & The Half-Blood Prince." The Sacha Baron Cohen starrer faces strong competition from last weekend's animated opener "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" which barely lost the race for first place to mega blockbuster "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" when making its debut last weekend. The race will be a tough one and always is when pitting r-rated films vs. family friendly offerings. Film is helmed by Larry Charles and written by Cohen, Anthony Hines, Dan Mazer and Jeff Schaffer. »

Movie Review: “Brüno”

10 July 2009 12:01 AM, PDT | screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news »

Seen on: July 6, 2009

The players: Director: Larry Charles, Writers: Sacha Baron Cohen, Cast: Sacha Baron Cohen, Anthony Hines, Dan Mazer

Facts of interest: Larry Charles also directed "Borat" and "Religulous."

The plot: Cohen stars as a gay Austrian fashionista who travels to the U.S. to become a huge star.

Our thoughts: I walked into Sacha Baron Cohen’s “Brüno” with incredibly high expectations, but I really shouldn’t have. Sure, the film is mostly entertaining and at times immensely hilarious, but as it turns out, it’s by no means as original and refreshing as his 2006 smash hit “Borat.” Now, let uns see watt sis one is all abüt… »
