Note: This interview was done at the press junket for “Milk”. I finally got around to transcribing it this weekend. Sorry for the delay.Already playing is Gus Van Sant’s “Milk”. Since I’ve already written about the film when I posted the movie clips a few weeks back, this intro will be brief. All you really need to know is…the performances are all top notch. Sean Penn is Harvey Milk. And this is a film you really need to see. Anyway, I recently participated in roundtable interviews with most of the cast and the one below is with Emile Hirsch. In the movie, Emile plays one of Harvey Milk’s close friends and biggest supporters Cleve Jones. During our interview, Emile talked about the making of “Milk”, what he has coming up, and a lot more. As always, you can either read the transcript below or listen »

Kristen Stewart star of vampire romancer Twilight made an appearance in our New Regime lineup. Heres a full Qa with the preciously precocious young lady where she talks about being Bella living life as a working actress and the authority issues that lead her to read Camus Steinbeck and Bukowski on her own.You got your start as a child. Did you always see yourself acting into adulthood? It was never a preconceived thing. It was always arbitrary I think. Subsequently I became very passionate about acting. Now there is no reason for me to stop doing this. What impact did working with Sean Penn on Into the Wild have on you?It definitely opened my eyes to a different creative process. His direction is very specific but still he lets things happen. He just wants you to go for it. Once he picks his characters he gives you that confidence. »

Chicago – Paramount Home Video has scheduled two waves of catalog titles making their debut on Blu-Ray for the holiday season and the first set hits this week, just in time for you to finish up your Christmas shopping.
There are some recent comedy hits, a highly lauded drama from last year, and a forgotten Samuel L. Jackson movie. It’s hard to imagine anyone out there looking to buy all six of these titles and schedule a Blu-Ray marathon in their own home, but it’s also easy to see someone in your family having one on their holiday wish list. All films are presented in 1080p High-Definition Widescreen and feature English 5.1 Dolby True HD audio tracks.
2005’s “Coach Carter” stars Samuel L. Jackson as Ken Carter, the controversial basketball coach who locked out his entire undefeated team due to their poor academic performance. The players, »

My father passed away in 2007. My father had been sick for a very long time, almost ten years. My father’s passing was both a relief and a pain. I found out via E-mail. My mother called me in the morning, but I didn’t get her message until I woke up fully and because I have an iPhone, checking e-mail generally happens moments before messages. Death - like that - is a weird thing. I spent the day at home baffled, drank, and took a nap after some time. When you’re faced with death, when it becomes real but isn’t, you don’t exactly know what to do. When I woke up from my nap I went to see Into the Wild, which had opened recently. Emile Hirsch plays Christopher McCandless. Chris was a college graduate with parents of a smothering nature. His father Walt (William Hurt »

DVD Links: Release Dates | New Dvds | Reviews | RSS Feed I was not prepared for this week's DVD and Blu-ray list, primarily because I forgot not only were studios releasing titles today but also on the 19th and 21st in a final Christmas push. There are A Lot of Blu-ray titles in this week's edition as Paramount unleashes an onslaught of catalog titles as you will see right off the bat and then Criterion also takes their first nose dive into Blu-ray this week with a selection of four titles. Then you have the usual new releases which come on DVD as well as with Blu-ray counterparts. As usual, clicking on the Buy Now links will take you to Amazon and show you the selection of all the versions of each film you can buy. For example, with The Mummy movies not only will it link to the DVD and Blu-ray versions, »

When the Golden Globe nominations were announced last week, there was one glaring omission from the Best Supporting Actor category: a nod for Milk. Actually, there were four glaring omissions, because Milk still does not have a definite forerunner among its quartet of campaigned-for supporting actors, which includes Josh Brolin, James Franco, Emile Hirsch and Diego Luna. Did the Hollywood Foreign Press Association truly snub the film, as has been suggested, or could the organization simply not decide which actor to nominate? Perhaps the two favorites, Brolin and Franco, cancelled each other out. If so, the Academy needs to ensure that such a thing doesn’t happen with its Oscar nominations. And the best way to do this is to get behind Diego Luna for Best Supporting Actor. This will »

Starring: Sean Penn, Emile Hirsch, Josh Brolin, James Franco, Diego Luna Director: Gus Van Sant Release Date: November 26, 2008 Running Time: 128 mins MPAA Rating: R Distributors: Focus Features - - - As if we haven’t already had our fair share of political drama with the recent presidential election comes a motion picture that mirrors the change in society that Mr. Obama has brought upon our nation. When his campaigns conclude we don’t see what goes on behind closed doors. A man who wants to bring so much change to the world turns into a ghost while not seen on his soapbox promising hope. With Milk the movie thrives on scenes like that, creating an intimate and personal feel of a man who was energetic and motivated by opportunities life offers. Certain times the film is too personal as director Van Sant laces actual footage of Harvey’s movement which »

Earlier this year, actor Emile Hirsch traveled far away from the glamour of Hollywood to lend a hand in the conflict-wracked African nation of Congo. The current star of 'Milk' reveals his day-by-day diary during his trip in the latest issue of Men's Journal, available on newsstands this week. Emile spent five days visiting the country that has suffered one of the most deadly conflicts since World War II, where more than 5.4 million people have died, 1.3 million are displaced, and violence and rape are a daily threat. He joined with international agency Oxfam to raise awareness about the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the area, where the organization is providing water and sanitation to tens of thousands of people living in refugee camps.

Silent black and white images of police raids on gay bars flicker on the screen. Men bury their heads in their arms, cover their faces with their hands, and try to hide from the cameras as they're shoved into paddy wagons. One frightened man throws the contents of a glass into the lens.
That's the opening scene of Gus Van Sant's Milk, and it pretty much drags you by the hair right into the nightmare of shame and fear that gay men lived in the pre-Stonewall era, and even afterward. And while the footage was emotionally shocking to many in the audience, no one wondered why it was there. It was a political statement, and this, after all, is the most eagerly awaited political film in gay movie history.
If you've heard the wait was worth it, you've heard right; Milk is a political powerhouse. »

Milkby Mike Digiorgio, Writer Years before the recent California Proposition 8, there was California Proposition 6: an initiative to ban – or fire – homosexual teachers from public schools. Fighting that proposition was one of the many causes championed by Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man to be voted into a major public office in America. The biographical Milk is certainly going to resonate with those who are part of the very similar cause today. Milk (Sean Penn) decides to take it up at mid-life and become a champion for civil rights. It’s a steep uphill struggle considering even in his home of San Francisco, not everyone agrees on whether the fight for gay rights is a civil rights issue. With all due respect to those who have fought and are still fighting the fight, onscreen at least – the first half of Milk seems familiar. As a narrative, it plays out »

Well, since last week's edition I have seen The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Doubt, Revolutionary Road and earlier today I saw The Reader. I can tell all interested parties that I think all four are quality films, but obviously some get me a bit more excited than others. I already did a short commentary on my thoughts of Benjamin Button, which basically proclaimed my love for the film and I do think it is going to end up being the film to beat as I have a limited number of films yet to see, but it isn't going to be an easy task because the majority of the films behind it are all pretty much operating on the same level. Basically, if you think of a door blocking Benjamin Button from all other contenders, just imagine the pounding that door is going to take as a group of films »

They have also chosen to ignore an ongoing online debate among book fans about the films casting choices although Stewart says shes aware some fanatics continue to be disgruntled over her winning the Bella part.I dont take it personally at all to be this figurehead in these girls minds a weird little prop for them says the 18yearold Los Angeles actress. Milk opens tomorrow at the Ritz and the sense of excitement about Sean Penn's complex and inspirational performance as openly gay San Francisco City Supervisor Harvey Milk is building to a fever pitch.
Milk was a figure of great humanity, depth and public responsibility, and a funny, funny man. He was a figure who commanded admiration from all who knew him, from his gay and lesbian base in the Castro to labor activists who never could have dreamed they would support a gay candidate but who were won over by his magnetic charm and political genius. He was a great man, always a big acting challenge. But it looks like Penn has risen to the occasion. The reviews certainly bear that out:
"Mr. Penn, an actor of unmatched emotional intensity and physical discipline, outdoes himself here, playing a character different from any he has portrayed before." - A.O. »
