Today is as much about what I didn't do at the fest, as the screenings itself. I overslept and miss the Hair of the Dog brunch and the Txmpa Incentives panel. I believe Debbie made it to the panel, so hopefully she'll be doing a writeup later. I did make it over the Driskill 1886 cafe for some lemony eggs benedict before heading to a screening that I ended up switching with Alabama Moon, so I had a lot of time on my hands today.
Alabama Moon, directed by Austin's Tim McCanlies, harkens back to the vintage Wonderful World of Disney films I used to watch on Sunday nights. Kid in trouble, the requisite mean and inept adults, the bully with a change of heart, and a few good and kind adults to bring about a happy ending. Austin favorite Clint Howard plays the constable who makes Moon's life really difficult after Moon's father dies. »

The Austin Film Festival, which kicks off on October 22, will be hosting quite possibly one of the coolest retrospectives that any space nerd could hope for. They will welcome director Ron Howard, his brother Clint, astronaut Jim Lovell and other very special guests to the Paramount Theater for a retrospective screening of Apollo 13 on Saturday, October 24th. The star-studded event will also include Apollo 13 screenwriters William Broyles Jr. and Al Reinert (who directed one of my favorite space docs of all time, For All Mankind), as well as Nasa mission control specialists Jerry Bostick, John Aaron and Sy Liebergot (who was played by Clint Howard in the film) -- all of whom worked in mission control during the ill-fated Apollo 13 mission. Most impressive of all is Jim Lovell (portrayed by Tom Hanks in the film), who was the mission commander and co-author of the book "Lost Moon: The Perilous Voyage of Apollo 13," upon »

A couple more cult-fave slasher flicks of the early ’80s receive the special-edition treatment via DVDs that arrive November 24. Fango got the details on a new disc of Mark Rosman’s 1983 The House On Sorority Row (the basis of the current big-screen remake Sorority Row) from Liberation Entertainment, and the DVDebut of 1980’s Silent Scream from the new Scorpion Releasing.
House On Sorority Row, previously issued on a bare-bones disc by Elite, has been given a fresh transfer from a recently discovered print for this 25th Anniversary Edition (even though the film is technically 26 years old). The film is now supplemented with:

Just the other day, I found myself really missing the 1990’s. Those glorious days of huge cell phones, slow computers, dayglow jackets, funny Simpson episodes, and Ticks. The quintessential 90’s movie, 1993’s Ticks, is so 90’s it could be put in a time capsule for future generations to study.
The cast is a fine parade of “I know someone famous” actors including: Alfonso Ribeiro, Peter Scolari, as well as brother Clint and father Rance Howard. The characters themselves are a collection of stereotypes. The tough street kid, Darrel ‘Panic’ Lumley (Alfonso “I’m nothing like Carlton” Ribeiro), exudes street wisdom as well as street justice from his Ray-Ban stare down to his Zubaz pants. The quiet loner with a troubled past, »

Remember the days when a movie came out in theaters, then you waited a year or so for it to come out on video (and going back a bit further, waited for it to be in on VHS or Beta, depending on which player you had), and then waited even longer for it to hit television?
With cable on demand and quick transitions to DVD, that timeframe has been completely destroyed for me. I watched Bobcat Goldthwait's superb film World's Greatest Dad (starring Robin Williams in a beautifully understated performance) on demand a couple of weeks ago. It's out in theaters this weekend.
I'm also looking forward to seeing Rob Zombie's The Haunted World of El Superbeasto. Zombie has a great, dark imagination, and the voice talent he's assembled for this animated feature is tremendous. Rosario Dawson and Paul Giamatti are the big names, and there is a »

Chicago – When Marc Fienberg, first time director/writer of ‘Play the Game,’ was casting the role inspired by his grandfather, little did he know he soon would be working with the film and TV legend Andy Griffith.
Rating: 2.0/5.0 Griffith joined other sitcom stalwarts – including Doris Roberts of “Everyone Loves Raymond” and Liz Sheridan, best known as Jerry’s mother on “Seinfeld” – in a contemporary romantic comedy.
David (Paul Campbell) is a hotshot car salesman. When it comes to women, he is a player that uses the “game” to score easy relationships. In encouraging his widowed grandfather (Griffith) to use similar techniques, he sets off a series of events that have them both learning lessons about love and connection.

Rob Zombie's $10 million, hard-r animated film, The Haunted World of El Superbeasto, is headed straight-to-dvd next month via Anchor Bay. Zombie previously discussed the politics involved and the theatrical set-backs with /Film; outfitted with a voice-cast that includes Paul Giamatti (as villain Dr. Satan), Rosario Dawson, Brian Posehn, and Danny Trejo, we remain as bewildered over the prolonged release limbo as he was. And apparently a teaser trailer was issued for Beasto earlier this season, but today is the first we've screened it. Co-written and -directed by Mr. Lawrence (SpongeBob, Rocco's Modern Life), the professional style of the animation and overall sinister-pop sensibility is fluid and appealing and seems a natural inclusion for Halloween marathons (and Clint Howard cos-play fiestas). Update: Zombie has revealed to Styd that his '70s-action film, Tyrannosaurus Rex, is once again off development cinder blocks and slated to be his follow-up to the forthcoming »

It can be quite disappointing to see a beloved actor pop up in a terrible movie, but I'd say it's worse to see them in a terrible movie with a cast of people who used to be well-known. There's something about the has-been stigma that just hurts. One could excuse away bad movies to behind-the-scenes conflict or the need for cash (I'm looking at you, Michael Caine and Peter O'Toole), but joining a cast list filled with talent who used to be in big films just adds an extra slap.
See, The Hollywood Reporter posts that Tara Reid is making a Last Call, and she'll be joined by names that include Christopher Lloyd, Tom Arnold, Dave Foley, and Clint Howard. Sure, that last guy's career is all about the questionable gigs, but what's said with the rest of the roster? I don't want to say that these guys are has-beens, »

Yes, it really was just 8 months ago that party girl Tara Reid checked into rehab, getting her alcoholism and anorexia treated and emerging, hopefully, clean and ready to take her career seriously again. Which has led her to take a role in an indie comedy that is titled, I do not jest, Last Call. Is that really the way we're treating our recovering alcoholics these days? The THR story doesn't even suggest that Reid is getting the chance to act alongside major stars-- the biggest names are Clint Howard and Tom Arnold-- and we don't even know what Reid's role would be, though you can assume it's something along the lines of "pretty girl." Sure, Reid has to start somewhere after becoming completely unreliable on sets, but taking a movie titled Last Call just seems like a cruel joke. »
