Creative artists of every variety have made incisive, satiric or powerful statements about nuclear threat. They have offered cautionary works that depict the horror of the bomb or its meaning in our society. What these artistic statements share, however, with rare exceptions, is an avoidance of the specific subject of Hiroshima. Since August 1945, hundreds if not thousands of "nuclear" movies have appeared. Americans have been exposed to several foreign films on the subject, most notably Akira Kurosawa's Rhapsody in August, Shohei Imamura's Black Rain and, of course, Alain Resnais's classic 1959 drama Hiroshima, Mon Amour. These films are original or highly imaginative and contain striking images. At least one American "nuclear" film was a work of genius (Dr. Strangelove), and several others explored the issue thoughtfully (Fail-Safe, The War Game, Testament and Desert Bloom). James Quandt, senior programmer at Cinematheque Ontario in Toronto, has curated several touring retrospectives, including the recent “In the Realm of Oshima” currently screening at Berkeley’s Pacific Film Archive. He has edited monographs on Robert Bresson, Shohei Imamura, and Kon Ichikawa and is a regular contributor to Artforum. His recent published essays include ones on Robert Bresson, Pedro Costa, and Jia Zhang-ke. Quandt was awarded the Japan Foundation Special Prize for Arts and Culture in 2007.
My sincere thanks to Susan Oxtoby and Jonathan Knapp at the Pacific Film Archive for arranging time for Quandt and I to sit down for a conversation during his brief appearance in the Bay Area to introduce the Oshima retrospective.

A decent assortment of new DVDs in stores this week, from My Bloody Valentine 3-D to the early surprise hit of the year, Paul Blart: Mall Cop (err... you'll have to look past those ones to get to the good stuff). The Tom Cruise Nazi thriller Valkyrie is in stores today, and might make a good double bill with Fritz Lang's 1941 film Man Hunt which is hitting DVD for the first time. Then there's Howard McCain's viking vs alien epic Outlander, which might make a good double bill with The Asylum's direct-to-video monster battle Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus! The Star Wars comedy Fanboys is finally out on DVD (in the U.S. at least), along with the first season of True Blood and the seventh season of 24. See anything worth picking up? Valkyrie [1] (DVD, Blu-ray [2]) Fanboys [3] Paul Blart: Mall Cop [4] (DVD, Blu-ray [5]) Outlander [6] My Bloody Valentine 3-D [7] (DVD, »

Chicago – “Sin Nombre” is not only one of the few great films released so far this year, it heralds the arrival of a confident, stunning new voice on the filmmaking scene in Cary Fukunaga.
Fukunaga has already won awards (including Best Director and Best Cinematography at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival) and been signed to a development deal by one of the best studios making movies today in Focus Features and his first film just came out. He sat down with us a few weeks ago to discuss the technical challenges of shooting on a train, finding his cast, and his advice for young filmmakers.
“Sin Nombre” tells the interweaving stories of a gang member in Tapachulas, Chiapas, Mexico and a Honduran girl trying to make it from her country to the United States by riding the rails for weeks at a time. The gangster, Casper (Edgar Flores), is a brother in the Mara Salvatrucha gang, »
