Casey Affleck and Jessica Alba Cast in The Killer Inside Me

8 November 2008 12:29 AM, PST | From firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news

Michael Winterbottom (24 Hour Party People, A Mighty Heart) will direct an adaptation of Jim Thompson's classic noir novel The Killer Inside Me with Casey Affleck and Jessica Alba set to star. The story follows a West Texas sheriff named Lou Ford, played by Affleck, and his downward spiral from a boring small-town cop into a ruthless, sociopathic murderer. Alba plays a prostitute that he gets involved with. The book was first published in 1952 and was actually made into a film in 1976 that starred Stacy Keach. The adaptation was penned by Robert Weinbach and John Curran (Down Rusty Down). No matter the news, I always have to report on Casey Affleck because I love the guy and I'm always excited for every film he's in. He's a phenomenal up-and-coming actor, as was proven by both Gone Baby Gone and Assassination of Jesse James last year. I'm hoping he'll continue ...

Stuff and Things: Predator Pumpkins and Killing Ashton Kutcher

22 October 2008 6:30 PM, PDT | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

Wanna know what's going on today, but don't feel like reading a lot? Welcome to Stuff and Things -- where we collect the stuff (and things) currently making waves online and spit it out in one somewhat short, easy-to-read post.

-- First off, Slashfilm posted this image of a Predator-carved pumpkin (see above), and I'd like to personally thank them for the nightmares I'm going to have tonight. God bless the children in that household.

-- Ashton Kutcher is still making movies. That's the bad news. Seems he's teaming with 21 director Robert Luketic on a new action comedy called Five Killers about a former hitman (Kutcher) whose life gets turned upside down when a rival from his past hires a group of killers to whack him. Unfortunately, it's not based on a true story. (What? It's Halloween ... time, I'm allowed to be morbid!) [Variety]

Toronto Interview: Appaloosa Writer, Director, and Star Ed Harris

19 September 2008 6:04 PM, PDT | From firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news

It was just last year, when I caught a double dose of Assassination of Jesse James and 3:10 to Yuma in one day, that I finally realized how enjoyable westerns could be. Since then I've been exploring the genre and was admittedly excited to hear about a new film called Appaloosa. Written, directed, and starring Ed Harris, the film follows two friends hired to clean up a town of its local vermin, an outlaw named Randall Bragg. A few weeks back after the world premiere in Toronto, I had the immense honor of interviewing Ed Harris, and talked with him about all aspects of Appaloosa and westerns. If you're curious to hear about the behind-the-scenes aspects of the film and so much more, then this is an interview for you. Appaloosa is based on a book of the same name written by Robert Parker. Ed Harris adapted the screenplay with

Oscar Update: James Franco and Sally Hawkins Breakthrough

17 September 2008 12:49 AM, PDT | From Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

Sally Hawkins in Happy-Go-Lucky and James Franco in Milk

Photo: Miramax and Focus Features The only thing James Franco needs to concern himself with right now is continuing his streak to remind folks he isn't just the stupid character Harry Osbourne from the overblown Spider-Man franchise, a franchise I am sure has put plenty of coin in his pocket, but did nothing for his career. Following Spider-Man 2 he starred in a trio of bad films. Annapolis was downright awful, Tristan and Isolde wasn't much better and Flyboys was equally dreadful. He had a few small films from then on until Spider-Man 3, which, once again did nothing for him. Even if he had done some great acting in any of the Spidey films it wouldn't have matter (by the way he was given some of the worst material ever as Harry Osborn) since the films were more about effects

I like long film titles. I like long film titles that begin with the word “The”. Most of all, I like long film titles that begin with the word “The” and feature the main character’s name at the end of said title. Example: The Assasination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford. Great title. Another example. The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button. Amazing title. Now I bring you perhaps my favorite...

Worth Watching - Aug 6: Ed Harris' Appaloosa Trailer

6 August 2008 2:37 AM, PDT | From firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news

The first trailer for Ed Harris' western Appaloosa has been released. Last year when both 3:10 to Yuma and Assassination of Jesse James hit theaters, I predicted that the western genre might be attempting a return. While I would hardly call one extra film a return, this has an impressive cast and looks fantastic, so I yet again might ask whether westerns are indeed trying to make a comeback? Viggo Mortensen and Ed Harris star together as hired sheriffs in a small western town. They're joined by Jeremy Irons and Renée Zellweger. This trailer for Appaloosa looks fantastic and definitely has potential, but I'm wondering if this will be another forgettable western or something more. Take a look below and decide for yourself. Movie Trailer - The Western 'Appaloosa' with Ed Harris and Viggo Mortensen

6 August 2008 1:01 AM, PDT | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

I like Ed Harris. He's a hell of an actor, as everybody knows, but he was once very gracious to me about an interview. His publicist had screwed up the time or something so instead of giving me a brief ten minutes from the green room before he went on Regis, Ed personally rescheduled for right after the TV appearance and he called me back an we talked for almost 40 minutes. You root for hardworking guys like Harris as it is, but when they go out of their way, it says a lot. Believe me, there are plenty of actors who wouldn't have done the same thing in that position.

Interestingly, during our conversation a couple years ago, Harris brought up a new movie he was going to shoot in New Mexico, a Western called Appaloosa. The movie was going to co-star Viggo Mortensen, with whom Harris had worked in
