Yes Man (Peyton Reed, 2008)
10am, 8pm, Sky Movies Premiere
Remember Jim Carrey in Liar, Liar, where he forces himself to tell the truth for 24 hours? Well, here Jim Carrey forces himself to answer yes to any request, for a year. Which is upping the ante somewhat, but doesn't make it a better film. This is a return to the manic, gurning, not-very-funny Carrey, as if The Truman Show, Eternal Sunshine etc hadn't happened. Just say no.
The Golden Compass (Chris Weitz, 2007)
11.40am, 8pm, Sky Movies Family
What with Harry Potter, Narnia, Lemony Snicket and all, »

I’ve only walked out of two movies in my entire life: Cheaper by the Dozen 2 and, last week, Post Grad. I’ve come close to walking out of others but something or someone always gets me to stay in my seat. I first saw the trailer for Post Grad when I went to see I Love You, Beth Cooper (a movie that took every fiber of my being to sit through). I’ll be honest with you; I am recently out of college and jobless. I don’t know what made me think I could relate to Post Grad, but I knew I’d have to see it. If you read my last article, you know that I am also an absolute sucker for coming of age films. The added advantage that I have is the Optimum Rewards Card. If you have Optimum phone, internet and cable services, »

Post Grad 2009, USA Directed by Vicky Jensen Written by Kelly Fremon Starring Alexis Bledel, Zach Gilford, Michael Keaton, Jane Lynch 89 minutes, English When it comes to a critic’s personal biases and preferences, transparency is crucial. So, I’ll admit that I have a hard time with films about pretty people years younger than me who spout preciously overwritten dialogue while trying to decide between Columbia Law or a career as a rock star, or pick poetry and love over med school. I licked the inside of a bag of Cool Ranch yesterday for nourishment. Fuck all of you. That said, I can’t get too mad at Post Grad, which follows Ryden Malby (Alexis Bledel) through her post-collegiate anxiety. That’s because there’s not much to get mad at. It’s so innocuous, so tame, so very neutered, that it’s the cinematic equivalent of ordering room temperature »

The players: Director: Vicky Jenson, Writer: Kelly Fremon, Cast: Alexis Bledel, Zach Gilford, Michael Keaton, Carol Burnett, Rodrigo Santoro
Facts of interest: None whatsoever.
The plot: A recent college graduate finds herself in a tricky situation when she can't find a job and has to move back in with her parents.
Our thoughts: In Vicky Jenson’s “Post Grad,” Alexis Bledel stars as Ryden Malby, a recent college graduate who’s excited about entering the job market but quickly finds herself facing uncertain times when the job thing falls through and the lack of money forces her to move back in with her eccentric family. »

Directed by: Vicky Jenson
Cast: Alexis Bledel, Zach Gilford, Michael Keaton, Jane Lynch, Carol Burnett
Running Time: 1 hr 30 mins
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: August 21, 2009
Plot: Ryden Malby (Bledel) graduates from college and is forced to move back into her childhood home with her eccentric family, while she attempts to find a job, the right guy, and just a hint of where her life is headed.
Who’s It For? I would say teenage girls who loved Bledel in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, but I don’t know what positive lessons could be learned. Whatever you’re looking for, lower your expectations for this one.
Overall
It’s like two screenplays have been mashed together to form something that looks like a movie, but isn’t really.
In one of the stories, Ryden pins all of her hopes to her dream job straight out of college. She »

Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds is poised to claim the box office crown this weekend, but memories of the Grindhouse failure are still lingering. Is it a coincidence that Robert Rodriguez also has a new movie opening today, albeit one for kids? In addition to Shorts, there is also a new comedy from Shark Tale/Shrek co-director Vicky Jenson called Post Grad, and a documentary on the X Games... in 3-D! In limited release we have the Bobcat Goldthwaite dark comedy World's Greatest Dad starring Robin Williams (which is also available on VOD), Oliver Hirschbiegel's Five Minutes of Heaven, and a comedy no one has heard of starring Ben Stiller and Jason Schwartzman called The Marc Pease Experience, that seems to be getting screwed by Paramount. What will you be checking out this weekend? Inglourious Basterds [1] Shorts [2] Post Grad [3] X Games 3-D: The Movie [4] World's Greatest Dad [5] (limited) Casi Divas »

The new comedy ‘Post Grad’ can’t even really be construed as a comedy. It tries to be in parts. Well, Michael Keaton tries, but even his best Clark W. Griswold impression can’t save this one from being a stale redux of so many other movies. What the film really is, other than a piggybacker of movies about young adults seeking their place in the world that go all the way back to ‘The Graduate’ and beyond, is a lighthearted depiction of a family. Lighthearted isn’t exactly a genre, though it probably should be. That’s really all this film lives up to be. It’s humor isn’t particularly funny. It’s drama is anything but theatrical.
There are so many elements to the film that go absolutely nowhere, and you wonder if the screenwriter had it in mind to sell this as a pilot for a new TV series. »
