Weekend of June 20 – 22, 2008

Get Smart” stormed to the top of the North American box office this weekend with $39.1 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.

In the Peter Segal-directed spy comedy, Steve Carell stars as a clumsy secret agent who has only a few days to prevent a ruthless crime lord from securing world domination. Anne Hathaway, Alan Arkin and Dwayne Johnson co-star.

DreamWorks Animation’s family film “Kung Fu Panda” stayed put at No. 2 with a weekend gross of $21.7 million, reaching a total domestic gross of $155.5 million after three weeks in release. Directed by John Stevenson and Mark Osborne, the film follows the adventures of a lazy panda who must learn the basics of kung fu.

Review: "Get Smart"

23 June 2008 8:16 AM, PDT | From screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news

Seen on: June 20, 2008

The players: Director: Peter Segal, Writers: Tom J. Astle, Matt Ember, Cast: Steve Carell, Anne Hathaway, Dwayne Johnson, Alan Arkin, Terrence Stamp

Facts of interest: Based on the 1960s TV series co-created by Mel Brooks.

The plot: Agent Maxwell Smart (Carell) must hunt down and eliminate a ruthless villain who plans to take over the world.

Our quick thoughts: “Get Smart” is not as smart as you may think. Peter Segal’s action comedy misses its mark more often than it hits its obvious targets, offering audiences a moderately entertaining and quite simplistic flick with barely any surprises. Boasting an A-list cast led by Steve Carell, the film continually wrestles with mediocre screenwriting and a lack of solid laughs.

The Rock: 'Kiss With Carell Was Like Cat Litter'

20 June 2008 9:14 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Wrestler-turned-movie action man The Rock was left with a bitter taste in his mouth after an onscreen kiss with his Get Smart co-star Steve Carell - because the funnyman tasted like "cat litter".

The Rock - real name Dwayne Johnson - plays Agent 23 opposite funnyman Carell in the upcoming spy movie remake.

And although he was happy to add the same-sex smooch session to the film for laughs, Johnson admits he was left wiping his mouth after the scene.

He says, "We thought what's the funniest, entertaining thing we could do at the end of the movie that would really make a good laugh and we came up with the kiss. But there's 300 crew members, they're all looking and laughing and joking. I just see Steve Carell's lips.

"So the bottom of a cat's paw - the soft supple part underneath - that's what Steve Carell's lips are like. But his tongue is like kitty cat litter. That's the physical experience."

‘Get Smart’ red carpet interviews

19 June 2008 2:58 PM, PDT | From screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news

Peter Segal’s action comedy “Get Smart” opens tomorrow, and Entertainment Weekly briefly talked to the cast and crew at the film’s Los Angeles premiere last Monday. Topics of discussion included movie premieres and the possibility of a sequel, and here’s a little excerpt from what lead actor Steve Carell had to say about being offered his role:

“'I was so surprised when I was just given this part. I went into the room expecting to have to audition for the role. I took a headshot, even. And when they said I was who they had in mind for Max, my head exploded. I had never just been offered a part without auditioning.”

Hathaway Got Smart + Became One Of The Boys After Filthy Joke

18 June 2008 12:07 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Actress Anne Hathaway was so worried she'd be treated like a girl on the set of upcoming comedy remake Get Smart she told her castmates the dirtiest joke she could think of.

The Princess Diaries star jumped at the chance to take the lead female role in the movie - because she was tired of working on female-driven films.

But the 25-year-old beauty, who plays Agent 99 opposite comedian Steve Carell in the movie, quickly found herself surrounded by men.

She says, "I just finished making a movie (Bride Wars) with Kate Hudson and I was kind of in oestrogen-land and I didn't mind testosterone-ville.

"I came in about three weeks into filming, so I think, by that point, the guys had a camaraderie, and, all of a sudden, I was the girl on set, so everyone went out of their way to be polite to me.

"I just thought, this isn't going to work, we're not going to have any fun. I decided to tell the dirtiest joke I could think of just to put everyone at ease... Steve blushed."

And fellow co-star Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson was a big fan. He says, "She can be vulgar and I love that."
