Star Trek (2009) Blu-ray Review

6 November 2009 10:56 PM, PST | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Space. The Final Frontier. A place few were willing to venture with the last two Star Trek: The Next Generation helmed films. On virtual life support, J.J. Abrams and his Bad Robot collaborators reinvented the iconic franchise into something hardened Star Trek fans and casual moviegoers without an ounce of prior interest in the series could equally digest and enjoy. His efforts carried Star Trek into a new frontier of success and riches at the 2009 box office, to a place where Paramount's treatment of the Blu-ray Disc release should . and marvelously does - fall into the esteemed category of exemplary.

Star Trek's reboot begins with a huge bang, a knockout prologue that chronicles the birth of James T. Kirk and the death of his father, a Starship Captain (for twelve minutes), all during a surprise attack by a renegade Romulan Nero (Eric Bana). Flash forward a quarter of a »

Kate Mulgrew wants Captain Janeway in next Star Trek movie

5 November 2009 5:51 PM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Who and what will feature in the next Star Trek movie?

That seems to be a popular topic for debate as director Jj Abrams and writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman explore story possibilities amid huge pressure to repeat the success of the first film.

And Kate Mulgrew, who played Captain Kathryn Janeway in TV series Star Trek: Voyager, is keen on a slice of the intergalactic action once again.

Janeway also appeared as a Starfleet Vice Admiral in 2002's Star Trek Nemesis movie.

Genevieve Bujold was originally cast in the role for the TV series but quit after the second day of filming on the first episode.

Mulgrew, 54, who had suggested the character's first name, says she'd be very interested in appearing in the new Star Trek franchise if asked by Jj Abrams.

Asked by Sci Fi Now if she'd consider a role in the new films, she said: "I would, »

J.J. Abrams Discusses “Khannnnn!!!!” for Star Trek 2

5 November 2009 3:57 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

After the outstanding success of his Star Trek reboot, director J.J. Abrams has found himself fielding questions about the film’s sequel on a near daily basis. Who will be the villain? Does Chris Pine have as hard a time with Tribbles as William Shatner? Etc, etc. Luckily, Abrams is one of Hollywood’s more nerd friendly directors, so you can always count on him giving you a decent answer.

Recently, MTV caught up with Abrams for an exclusive interview about Star Trek 2. In the interview, Abrams discusses some possibilities  for the sequel and the relative leeway the screenwriters have in bringing old characters back to the big screen. Care to guess which name brought up the most excitement? You guessed it, Khannnnn!!!!, a.k.a Khan Noonien Singh, the genetically engineered superhuman played by Ricardo Montelban in Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan.

Capt. Janeway in 'Star Trek' Sequel?

3 November 2009 10:20 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

She hasn’t even seen the new Star Trek film yet, but Kate Mulgrew, who played Captain Kathryn Janeway in the Star Trek: Voyager TV series, already wants in on the rebooted franchise.

Mulgrew's Captain Janeway also had a cameo in the 2002 movie Star Trek: Nemesis. When asked if she would consider a role in the rebooted Trek film series by J.J. Abrams, she responded, "I would, I'd love to return to Janeway. I'd love to do her in a movie."

Writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman are currently developing a storyline for the Trek sequel, and in a separate interview, Abrams said any worry about bringing back established characters was negated by the first film’s success. In this summer’s Star Trek, Leonard Nimoy, who originated the Spock role, played an older, time-traveling version of himself.

According to Coventry Telegraph, Mulgrew admitted she has yet to watch Abrams' movie, »

Huge: J.J. Abrams mentions Star Trek villain Khan

3 November 2009 8:57 AM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

Along with covering the mythical Batman 3, writing articles about Star Trek 2 is rule No.3 for movie bloggers. It’s not like we have a choice. We have to cover minuscule nuggets of any  Star Trek news. If we don’t…well, the Council will remove our membership in the geek club and all we have left are Katie Holmes galleries.

Lost co-creator and all-around good guy J.J. Abrams spoke to MTV about the long rumored villain for Star Trek’s follow-up movie: the legendary Khan.

**Warning: the script is still being hammered out by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Damon Lindelof and we know of no certain plot points minus that the story will go “deeper.”**

Abrams said that if Khan were included in the next Star Trek, a different spin will be placed on the character much like Kirk and Spock in the last film.

Abrams Discusses Khan for 'Trek' Sequel...In Theory

3 November 2009 1:26 AM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

This is not the first time the subject of Khan has come up in the past few months. Star Trek writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman first broached the subject publicly this summer, during a conversation that also included J.J. Abrams. At the time, they positioned Khan in the best imaginable way: Javier Bardem. I mean, seriously, if you're going to do it, who would be better? Or to quote producer Damon Lindelof, "That's a no-brainer. That would be the most amazing thing ever."

Now Abrams has brought up the what if of Khan again, telling Ace Showbiz something surprising: Casting the role would require a lot of work. Really? Didn't we just go through that? "Now that we are in a parallel existence with what fans of the original series love so much, we could introduce any number of characters, settings, references and situations that the original series introduced, »

'Star Trek' Director: Khan's Recasting Will Be a Challenge

2 November 2009 7:00 PM, PST | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Talks about "Star Trek" possibly having a new Khan are mounting. When talking to MTV's Josh Horowitz about the follow-up to 2009's "Star Trek", director J.J. Abrams discussed on the likelihood of recasting the popular baddie though he kept mum on whether or not the villain will be included in the untitled Star Trek sequel.

"Now that we are in a parallel existence with what fans of the original series love so much, we could introduce any number of characters, settings, references and situations that the original series introduced," the 43-year-old filmmaker shared his thought. "Dealing with Khan would certainly be a challenge, but we had an equal challenge in finding our crew of the Enterprise."

In the interview, Abrams also addressed on the story ideas for the sequel. "While I don't want to approach the second film as a remake of episodes we've seen in the past...nothing is »

Exclusive: J.J. Abrams Talks About The Possibility Of Recasting Khan For 'Star Trek' Sequel

2 November 2009 12:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

J.J. Abrams nailed the recasting of "Star Trek" icons James T. Kirk and Spock for his big screen reboot this past May. The question, "Who in the world could possibly replace William Shatner on the Enterprise flight deck?" was answered with the resounding cry, "Holy crap is Chris Pine good!"

With these casting achievements behind him, Abrams knows he's opened up some creative leeway in terms of replacing characters in the mythology. Could that lead to another go at the franchise's #1 villain, Khan? In a recent interview, Abrams admitted taking on the genetic superfreak would be a challenge, but one no bigger than ushering in new versions of Kirk and Spock.

"I think one of the byproducts of doing this movie was we were able to dispel the obvious and understandable concerns—how can 'Star Trek' possibly exist without those original cast members?" the director explained during a »

Nero vs. Klingons In This Star Trek Deleted Scene

28 October 2009 3:52 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

To help build excitement for the upcoming release of Star Trek on DVD and Blu-ray, Paramount has released a deleted scene that will be a bonus feature on the home video release of the franchise’s rebirth installment.

This scene is part of the story where Nero (Eric Bana) is held captive by Klingons and interrogated about his knowledge of the future and of the Federation. You’ll definitely recognize one line from the trailer where Nero states “The wait is over” which wasn’t a part of the theatrical release of the film. For Trek fans out there, you’ll also notice another special something from classic Trek lore.

Check the video out after the jump.

Is 'Fringe' In Danger Of Losing Leonard Nimoy?

28 October 2009 10:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Fans of "Fringe" waited patiently throughout the show's first season to meet the enigmatic scientist William Bell. That patience was rewarded in the form of a brief cameo by actor Leonard Nimoy during the season's closing moments and in an extended scene earlier this year.

But based on the words of Nimoy himself, Bell's days on "Fringe" could already be numbered. The actor spoke with Hero Complex about his role on "Fringe," admitting that his turn as the scientific rival of Dr. Walter Bishop's could be at an end.

"I've done three appearances for them," said Nimoy. "I don't know if I will do a fourth."

Two out of Nimoy's three scenes have already aired, with the third performance recently shot. As for why the acclaimed "Star Trek" icon would turn down the opportunity to return to "Fringe," the actor said it has nothing to do with the show's quality, »

Star Trek Writers Are Not Producing Doc Savage

28 October 2009 4:45 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Contrary to our previous report that Star Trek screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman would be producing an adaptation of Doc Savage written by Lethal Weapon and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang's Shane Black, it looks like Neil Moritz and Ori Marmur (The Green Hornet) are producing it instead.

AICN originally named Orci and Kurtzman as the producers, while Collider pointed out the error, maintaining that the rest of the original report is true. Doc Savage will be penned by Black, who may direct, and the movie will take place in the 1930s instead of being updated for modern times.

Whoever produces Doc Savage, we can't wait to see the pulp world's first physician/surgeon/scientist/adventurer/inventor/explorer/researcher/musician in a better movie than 1975's camp classic Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze.

Update: Green Hornet producers to make new Doc Savage movie

26 October 2009 6:48 PM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Some new information has surfaced on the proposed new Doc Savage film, featuring the pulp hero previously seen in a 1975 movie starring Ron Ely.

Yesterday we learned that Lethal Weapon writer Shane Black was about to start work on the screenplay and may also direct the feature.

Ain't It Cool News had reported that it would be produced by the hit writing/production duo of Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman.

But Collider says the producers will in fact be Neil Moritz and Ori Marmur, who are also producing The Green Hornet, Battle: Los Angeles and the remake of Jack The Giant Killer.

Collider adds that Moritz and Marmur have a deal at Sony and so the film would be made at that studio if it goes ahead. This is intriguing, as Warner Bros released the 1975 movie and made it available on DVD in March this year and it's Warner's DC Comics »

Star Trek duo hire Lethal Weapon writer for new Doc Savage movie

26 October 2009 6:39 PM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Pulp hero Doc Savage is heading back to the big screen.

Ain't It Cool News has reported that Shane Black, writer of the Lethal Weapon films, is penning the script for the project.

Black revealed the movie is being produced by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, whose credits include TV shows Xena: Warrior Princess, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Fringe and the films The Legend of Zorro, Mission Impossible III, Transformers and Star Trek.

He also told the site he would stay true to the original 30s setting of the character and would include sidekicks The Fabulous Five.

It will be an original story and he is preparing to start work on the screenplay, he said.

Doc Savage, created in 1933 for Street and Smith Publications by writer Lester Dent, publisher Henry W. Ralston and editor John L. Nanovic, first appeared in pulp magazines.

The adventurer was later adapted into a radio series, »

Shane Black To Pen Doc Savage Script

26 October 2009 3:12 PM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Clark Savage Jr. is certainly a jack-of-all-trades. He.s a surgeon, scientist, adventurer, inventor, explorer and as close to a superhero as you can get. Soon Clark, widely known as Doc Savage, will add another trade to his resume: big screen action hero. As reported by AICN, while at a party, Shane Black revealed that he.s working on a Doc Savage script and may even direct the film. On top of that, he named Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci as the film.s producers. That would mean the Lethal Weapon scribe is working with the producers of Star Trek and Transformers to bring a popular pulp mag character to life. Whether or not you know who Doc Savage is, that.s pretty big. Before getting ahead of myself, I did a little research . a quick Google search . and came across an article on Collider refuting the news that Orci »

Next ‘Star Trek’ movie to “go deeper and maintain fun and adventure”

26 October 2009 1:51 PM, PDT | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

Don’t get too used to saying “Star Trek 2″ to your buddies. J.J. Abrams isn’t keeping that name.

The Star Trek director recently said in an interview that the next installment in the venerable sci-fi series will “go deeper” into its story. “The second one has an obligation to go deeper and maintain the fun and adventure in the sense of optimism and scale that ['Trek' originator Gene] Roddenberry created,” Abrams said. “But I do think it has to evolve and not become some polemic over-the-top, on-the-nose allegory,” he continued on explaining his grounds. “It needs to be something that is not just about the characters meeting each other and having their first adventure; it needs to be about having their most meaningful one.”

When the Lost co-creator was asked if the next Trek will be called Star Trek 2, he responded, “I think we can’t really do that, right? »

'Lethal Weapon' Screenwriter & 'Star Trek' Producers Team Up For 'Doc Savage'

The Phantom isn't the only classic pulp comic book icon getting the live-action treatment—though he is the only one getting two adaptations, to the best of my knowledge. Now it looks like Doc Savage is making a comeback.

Ain't It Cool News webmaster Harry Knowles spoke with writer Shane Black, best known for his "Lethal Weapon" and "The Last Boy Scout" screenplays, during a chance encounter this weekend. The screenwriter revealed that "Doc Savage," based on the Lester Dent-penned pulp icon, would be his next project.

Additionally, Black said that Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman of "Star Trek" and "Cowboys & Aliens" fame will produce the "Doc Savage" adaptation.

Doc Savage — real name Clark Savage, Jr. — is an ordinary human with extraordinary abilities, thanks to deliberate and rigorous training enacted by a team of scientists during Savage's early childhood. Among Savage's many gifts are his enhanced strength and agility, »

Straight from screenwriter Shane Black's mouth to the content providing administrative screen of Ain't It Cool News, the Lethal Weapon writer has been hired to write a brand-new screenplay for a proposed Doc Savage movie. Guess who's producing this new attempt? None other than Star Trek/Transformers super-scribes-turned-producers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman.

Black communicated the news to AICN's founder Harry Knowles who also got told that this attempt will keep the character in his original time piece of the 1930s and also make sure that Doc's troupe of adventurers -- Ham, Johnny, Monk, Long Tom and Renny -- will be included. "It will be an original Doc Savage story that attempts to encapsulate the feeling of the whole collection of Lester Dent's work," writes AICN's poobah.

Exclusive: Producing Duo Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci Not Producing Doc Savage

26 October 2009 12:32 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

This past Saturday, Ain’t It Cool News reported that the amazing Shane Black (he used to be Shane Black the Great but now he’s amazing) will be writing and possibly directing the adaptation of the pulp fiction hero “Doc Savage”.  AintItCool also noted that power producers/screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Robert Orci would be producing the film.  Contrary to popular opinion, Kurtzman & Orci do not produce every upcoming genre property passing through Hollywood.  It’s an honest mistake on AICN’s part but we know the film’s real producers.  Hit the jump to find out.

First off, let me say that everything in Harry’s story is pretty much true except for the producers-part.  Shane Black is writing it.  Black may direct it.  And it will be set in the 30s and not modernize the story.  However, the film’s producers are not Kurtzman and Orci.  The »
