Chinese entertainment portal Sina has released some concept artwork from director Tsui Hark’s historical thriller Detective Dee and the Mystery of Phantom Flame. Reason enough for me to finally write an article on the project.
The film takes place in the Tang Dynasty and tells the story of the detective Di Ren Jie (or Dee) who gets called back from exile by the Chinese empress Wu Zetian to solve a series of mysterious deaths of high court officials. During his investigations Dee gains support from the bustling commander Bei and a master of disguise names Ghost Doctor.
Next to Hong Kong’s darling Andy Lau, Carina Lau (Ashes of Time), Li Bing Bing (Forbidden Kingdom), Tony Leung Kar Fai (Election) and Lau Ching Wan (Mad Detective) will star in this 13 million Us$ production. Sammo Hung will be responsible for choreographing the action scenes. Shootings have begun in May, Detective

“The China White” was originally released back in 1989 and was the first international film from Hong Kong director Ronny Yu, who has since gone on to helm the likes of Jet Li’s “Fearless” and the forthcoming anime adaptation “Blood: The Last Vampire”. Stepping into his shoes are Bobby and Danny Chow (Russell Wong and Steven Vincent Leigh), who quickly set about protecting their turf and avenging his death. While

Calling out sick never quite works for me...confessions of a blogaholic, I guess. Here are today's new DVDs. (Links go to Netflix for your ease of queue'ing)
The Must See
Ashes of Time Redux I once tried to watch a copy of Ashes of Time before the "reworking" and the image quality was so bad that I gave up after five minutes. Who wants a Wong Kar Wai movie with its visuals compromised? Nobody who knows how ravishing his imagery is, that's who. I'm thrilled to have a real go at this swordsmen drama starring the unbeatable Tony Leung Chiu-Wai and his two greatest screen lovers: Happy Together's Leslie Cheung and In the Mood for Love's Maggie Cheung. Plus there's Tony's frequent co-star and offscreen wife Carina Lau, Jacky Cheung and the legendary Brigitte Lin (The Bride With White Hair). Yes please sextupled.
