Sure, it had cheesy dialogue and ridiculous-looking effects, but G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra's $100-million opening weekend was enough for Paramount to grant director Stephen Sommers and company another "Go, Joe!"
The cast is ready to return, with Dennis Quaid telling io9:
Yeah if they do one, I'm there. And Byung-hun Lee, who played Storm Shadow in G.I. Joe, is reportedly starting work on the sequel at the end of the year according to a Korean news source.
Top star Lee Byeong-Heon is in the new Hollywood film, G.I. Joe 2! He will be starting the filming by the end of this year and has been contracted for the 3rd sequel, also!
No official word on whether Sommers is retuning for the sequel, though he has said that he would shoot his live-action Tarzan movie next "unless the studio wants a G.I. Joe sequel."

Lost is one of those programs that will always have it’s own, unique, original footprint on television history. Its power to overwhelm with wonder, character arcs and “flash-back-flash-forward” stories is legendary. As the series enters it’s final season, it promises to continue to deliver, in particular with the recent cast addition of Japanese Elvis-level-star, Hiroyuki Sanada (Speed Racer).
Exactly what role Hiroyuki will be filling is still up for grabs, but suffice to say - mysterious pan-flute-laden music will follow most of Hiroyuki Sanada during his steps in the upcoming final season of Lost.
Just as was evidenced recently with Korean-born actor Byung-hun Lee’s (Storm Shadow) turn in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, American audiences often are uniquely unaware of just how famous and popular people showing up “in our programs” are in their home countries across the pond. Hiroyuki Sanada, who celebrates his 50th birthday later this year, »

I was disheartened by Paramount.s decision not to show .G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. to critics. The studio chose to screen the Hasbro-based film to fans. Upon seeing the movie, I realized why Paramount kept the film from the prying eyes of critics. .G.I. By now, you've become accustomed to reading — and many of us have become accustomed to writing — negative reviews for the bumper crop of today's high-octane, adventure films. We'll drone on about the ridiculous, A.D.D. action scenes that look like they were choreographed by a baboon playing 'Gears of War'...while jacked up on crystal meth; we'll chide the over-reliance on CGI and "big 'splosions that blow stuff up good"; and we'll lament the stories that offer all the plot & character development of a smokey burnout.
Well, I'm not going to do that this time. No siree—I'm going to take a different approach. Instead, I decided to watch G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra through the eyes of an 11 year-old...a big part of this film's intended audience.
And what was my reaction?
It's totally awesome!
Doubly so if you can sneak some Count Chocula into the multiplex. »

When I was a kid, I spent hours in my room pretending elaborate battles between good and evil. Honorable Joes would clash with evil Cobras from the bed to the carpet in high-flying, slow motion violence. If I grew tired of that, I’d have the men kick down tiny plastic doors and wreak havoc on the unsuspecting citizens of Legoland or zipline into my sister’s dollhouse and secure the residence. The toys became so worn out from the countless plastic battles I started repairing their rubber bands with household items so they could return to war.
Then there were the cartoons, which became the highlight of my generation’s Saturday mornings curled up in pajamas with a bowl of sugary cereal. I learned not to play with matches not from singeing my fingers (thrice), but from one of many post credits public service announcements.

G. I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra
Directed by: Stephen Sommers
Cast: Channing Tatum, Marlon Wayans, Sienna Miller, Rachel Nichols, Ray Park, Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Running Time: 1 hr 55 mins
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: August 7, 2009
Plot: An elite military unit known as G.I. Joe is led by General Hawk (Dennis Quaid). Duke (Tatum) joins the gang and must deal with a past love (Miller) as a new evil organization is looking to take over the world.
Who’s It For? Adults who played with the toys, collected the comic books or loved watching the cartoon series should be content. Otherwise, this one is for the kids. Which is too bad, because it’s Really violent. There are tons of knives to the head. Tons.
Expectations: I was an adult who played with the toys, collected the comic books or loved watching the cartoon series. In fact, here’s my review of G.I. Joe »

Arriving amid an avalanche of bad buzz and diminished expectations the much hyped, long developed G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra surprises by being a lot of fun. It’s not a typical action movie for these cynical postmodern cinematic times. Nothing about it is deep or groundbreaking; it doesn’t re-imagine the Joes in any sort of gritty contemporary context and a lightness of being permeates every scene. It is, put simply, an unabashed work of pure entertainment made without the slightest agenda beyond replicating the look and feel of a Saturday morning cartoon. As the picture begins Duke (Channing Tatum) and Ripcord (Marlon Wayans) talk their way onto the super elite G.I. Joe squad run by General Hawk (Dennis Quaid), which features an international roster of highly trained soldiers. Grand hubbub happens when the Baroness (Sienna Miller), working for an evil crime syndicate headed by maniacal businessman McCullen (Christopher Eccleston) snatches briefcases »

Snake Eyes. Scarlett. Storm Shadow. Duke. And … Ripcord? Okay, so maybe not a whole lot of people who grew up with the ’80s cartoon, and who have been hoarding Joe action figures since they were a wee tyke will be showing up in theaters to see Marlon Wayans as Ripcord. But let’s face it, haven’t we all been waiting to see Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow bang swords on the big screen and in live-action forever? Well we’ve finally gotten our wish: “G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra” opens today, and this is your official discussion thread. Have you seen it? What did you think? Has Stephen Sommers raped your childhood? Or has he restored it to its full glory? An elite military unit comprised of special operatives known as G.I. Joe, operating out of The Pit, takes on an evil organization led by a notorious arms dealer. »

From MTV.Com: "Star Trek" launched Chris Pine into Hollywood stardom. "Terminator Salvation" delivered Sam Worthington, a guy you'll be hearing a lot more of in movies like "Avatar" and "Clash of the Titans." "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" introduced the world to a guy named Freddie Stroma, a blond Brit who has leading man written all over his chiseled cheekbones.
A bunch of big-budget summer movies have given us a breakout star, someone we must keep our eye on, an actor or actress who will use the summer of 2009 as a springboard to even bigger and better things. On Friday, "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" hits theaters. Who will we be talking about on Monday? Will "Joe" prove popular enough to boost the profile of someone most people have never heard about before?

This Friday, the G.I. Joes will head into global battle against the band of baddies who will one day become the Cobras. For fans of the action figures on which the film — titled, appropriately enough, "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" — is based, these two groups of opposing fighters are the stuff of years' worth of childhood adventures.
And yet the movie's origin-story focus will give both Joe devotees and Joe newbies a chance at a fresh approach to the material. To help everyone get up to speed, MTV News has dug up some killer "G.I. Joe" clips in which we get extended looks at high-tech gear, ticked-off bad guys and the wicked »

It’s not very often that such a fond childhood memory of mine is given the opportunity to play itself out on the big screen. Transformers? It never played any real part in my childhood, so when I saw it on the big screen it wasn’t with the fondness of someone who’d acted out their very own Transformers movies as a child, in the playground with friends.
That was the feeling I got when the opening credits rolled on G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra this past Saturday, at an exclusive screening in the prestigious Vue cinema at the O2 Arena.
My love of G.I. Joe (or Action Force as it was called in the UK back then), began during a turbulent time in my life, I’d just moved away from my Mother and Siblings to live with my Father in a strange part of town, »

Downey, California — These are strange times we live in. People my age grew up playing with 12-inch-tall versions of "G.I. Joe" characters, imagining wondrous adventures as we grew up in the '80s. Now, Hollywood is bringing back "Transformers," "Smurfs" and all the rest — and risking our beloved memories as they attempt to see if we're still interested.
A little while back, the surreal became real as I walked around the set of "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" and witnessed elaborate props and highly paid stars attempting to re-create what we used to do in our backyards for free. And what I saw had this lifelong fan of the franchise thinking, »

Love it, hate it, or fear it, here are four new clips from Stephen Sommers’ upcoming “G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra”, which is opening next week, August 7, 2009. That’s right, kids, pretty soon you’ll be able to prove to people that you were right along, it’s the best movie ever made. Either that, or you’ll be able to prove to people that it’s the worst movie ever made. Either way, you’ll be able to prove it come August 7. Until then, here are four fresh clips from the movie. Btw: I know that Byung-hun Lee supposedly has a flawless English accent, but why does it always sound like they’re dubbing his lines…? Starring Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Christopher Eccleston, Grégory Fitoussi, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Leo Howard, Karolina Kurkova, Byung-hun Lee, Sienna Miller, David Murray, Rachel Nichols, Kevin J. O’Connor, Gerald Okamura, Ray Park, Jonathan Pryce, and Dennis Quaid. »

I was just about to wrap it up for today and head to bed when I decided to check out these two new clips from Stephen Sommers' upcoming action flick "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra."
Strangely enough, I'm wild awake now, primarily because this first clip below is really action-packed. Give me a whole movie with silly action like this, and I may actually enjoy myself.
Anyway, in this first clip, Duke (Channing Tatum) chases after the Baroness (Sienna Miller). In the second clip, Duke and Ripcord (Marlon Wayans) get a little accelerator suit demo.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Dennis Quaid and Byung-hun Lee co-star in the film about an elite task force trying to stop a ruthless villain. See it in theaters next week. »
