DVD Releases: Dec. 1, 2009: Wield a Knife of Ice by the Deadline Set by the Little Red Devil

30 November 2009 6:16 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

A new month; a new batch of DVDs and Blu-rays to consider. We've used the phrase "mixed bag" a few times before this year, but never has it been more apropos than with regard to those discs that are being released on December 1st, 2009!

A new Evil Dead is on its way -- not that anyone can figure out why. Gremlins is hitting Blu-ray as is the new Terminator flick. And the Brittany Murphy-starrer Deadline, which is better than it has any business being, drops along with a few other indies like Deader Country, Poker Run, and Sins of the Father.

Little Red Devil with Daniel Baldwin and Dee Wallace definitely sounds intriguing, but for my money, the hand's down pick of the week is 1972's Knife of Ice, a rare Italian giallo from Umberto Lenzi starring the gorgeous and glamorous Carroll Baker.

Featured Article: Classic Italian Film

9 November 2009 4:45 PM, PST | Screenrush | See recent Screenrush news »

With its silent superspectacles, postwar neo-realism and 1960s new wave, the Italian film industry has enjoyed three major periods of international influence. In between times, it has assimilated the technological advances and dramatic styles of foreign competitors and used them to shape such local trends as the `white telephone' film, calligraphism, giallo, the `sword and sandal' epic, the `spaghetti' Western and the dialect comedy.

Over the years, the unexpected has become commonplace. Therefore, it's no surprise to see Gianni di Gregorio, the screenwriter of the uncompromising crime saga Gomorrah, making his directorial debut with Mid-August Lunch, a charming comedy of bourgeois manners, whose unforced naturalism, social insight and deceptive wit hark back to a golden age that is recalled here by MovieMail - the best place to buy classic movies and world cinema on DVD.

After two decades of propaganda and pictorialism, Italian film went back to basics after the Second World War. »

MattFini's Halloween Top 10 Lists: Top 10 Gialli

30 October 2009 5:36 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Yesterday’s list of overlooked slasher flicks got me thinking about their European cousin, the giallo. Sure, most gialli were cranked out before the slasher craze was under way, but it’s hard to ignore the similarities: knife-wielding, black-gloved lunatics, tragic prologues often used establish our killer’s motivations and, of course, excessive female exploitation. In short: total bliss!

I’ve limited this list to one film per director so to prevent my own personal bias from creeping into it. But, really, there’s so many of these damn things I didn’t think it’d be fair to turn this into a showcase for just two or three directors. Next to the slasher, the giallo is my favorite subgenre. Outlandish plot twists, a staggering amount of degenerate red herrings, sinister animals and lots and lots of J & B Scotch, if you’ve got just a few of these elements »

Review of Serbia's Zone Of The Dead

Year: 2009

Directors: Milan Konjevic & Milan Todorovic

Writers: Vukota Brajovic & Milan Konjevic & Milan Todorovic

IMDb: link

Trailer: link

Review by: Dejan Ognjanovic

Rating: 3 out of 10

[Cross-posted on cultofghoul]

Zone Of The Dead is a disappointing film about zombies. Yes, another one of those cheap knock-offs too preoccupied with their obvious homages to actually deliver something original.

This is one of those flicks in which characters have names after genre greats; here we have agents Savini and Bottin, while the female lead is called Mina Millius. Pity that neither the make-up effects nor direction in this film are anywhere near the works of the invoked masters.

This is one of those flicks in which they just put make-up on a bunch of friends and family members who are too happy to clown around, each playing their own version of a zombie, but with no real coordination or training that real stuntmen and extras would have. »

Spirits Captured On Film [1] I have this story that I like to tell after I’ve been drinking about the night that I was alone in our house and thought someone had broken in. I was scared shitless. Weekly Body Count: Trap Them and Eat Them

20 May 2009 9:02 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

One of the many disadvantages of living in a place like New Hamsphire is that you have to live on the edge vicariously through the lives of people who live closer to the action through correspondence so it was a while before I got into the depths of crazy horror movies. Though I'd been watching horror for years, we never had the convenience of one of those video stores that bought one of everything from their distributors and the horror sections around these parts were woefully understocked. If you wanted to watch A Nightmare on Elm Street 6, you could find it just about anywhere but if you wanted to go out on a limb and see something wildly exotic, you were screwed. Getting your hands on stuff bearing names like Lenzi, D'Amato and Deodato you had to drive into Boston and pay premium prices on factory pre-records and overpriced bootlegs. »

In Search Of Sean Flynn's "Temple Of The White Elephant"

29 January 2009 6:04 PM, PST | Cinemaretro.com | See recent CinemaRetro news »

Dear Staff of Cinema Retro:

Your magazine is the best of its type and along with FilmFax is one of my favorite reads! Your most recent issue was especially interesting. What caught my eye was the ad for "The Crimson Blade". I have been doing research re: the forgotten films of Sean Flynn, son of Errol Flynn. (I did notice when "the Italian offerings" were mentioned, there was no mention of 1962's "Il Figlio del Capitano Blood"!) The interesting coincidence is that when "The Son of Captain Blood" premiered in the U.K. in 1963, released by Warner-Pathe, in some regions it was shown on a double bill with Hammer's "The Scarlet Blade", which as I am sure your staff knows is the original title of the film released in the U.S.A. as "The Crimson Blade"!  Also according to articles I have been reading re: the release of Sean Flynn »
