Skydance TV Signs Patrick Massett, John Zinman to Overall Deal

Skydance Television has entered an overall deal with writer-producers Patrick Massett and John Zinman, the company announced Thursday.

Massett and Zinman’s television careers began with “Veritas: The Quest” at ABC, which they co-created and executive produced. They went on to co-executive produce the Emmy Award winning “Friday Night Lights” at NBC, “The Chicago Code” at Fox, and “Last Resort” at ABC. The duo then co-executive produced “The Blacklist” at NBC. Their most recent television credit includes executive producers and showrunners at NBC’s “The Player.” They got their start in film by co-writing “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” and their most recent film, “Gold,” was released in January.

The studio currently has several projects in development with the pair, including the first-ever live action television series for “Sword Art Online” (“Sao”), the massive Japanese novel and anime franchise to which Skydance acquired the global rights last year. Sam Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures and Good Universe have hired Nicolas Pesce to direct its reboot of “The Grudge.”

Pesce, who made his feature directorial debut last year on the horror vehicle “The Eyes of My Mother,” will also rewrite the script from Jeff Buhler.

The reboot began development in 2014. The producers are Raimi, Rob Tapert, and Taka Ichise, with Roy Lee, Doug Davison, Joe Drake, and Nathan Kahane executive producing.

The Grudge,” starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, was released in 2004 by Sony as a remake of the 2002 Japanese film “Ju-on: The Grudge.” Takashi Shimizu directed both movies.

Sony released “The Grudge 2” in 2006 and “The Grudge 3” in 2009. The original, starring Gellar as a nurse in Tokyo afflicted by a curse, grossed $187 million worldwide.

Rami created cult horror The Evil Dead and directed the original Spider-Man trilogy.

‘Another Period’ Renewed for Season 3 at Comedy Central

Comedy Central has renewed historical comedy “Another Period” for Season 3 ahead of its Season 2 premiere, Variety has learned.

The series, co-created, written by and starring Natasha Leggero and Riki Lindhome, debuts its second season on Wednesday, June 15 at 10 p.m. Jeremy Konner directs the show, which is executive produced by Leggero, Lindhome, Konner and Red Hour’s Ben Stiller, Debbie Liebling, Stuart Cornfeld and Mike Rosenstein. Monika Zielinska and Tara Schuster are the executives in charge of production for Comedy Central.

TruTV Unveils New Series, Specials and Development Projects
Turner Broadcasting’s TruTV has greenlit three new series and a host of specials and development projects as it builds up the volume of original programming.

TruTV has billed itself as a comedy network since its October 2014 rebranding campaign. The channel primarily serves up unscripted series but last year added its first scripted comedy, “Those Who Can’t,” which has been renewed for a second season.

New series include “Jon Glaser Loves Gear,” featuring the actor-comedian exploring various types of gear and gizmos. TruTV has ordered 10 half-hour episodes of the series created by Glaser for production banner Pffr.

“Lifescaping” is described as a mix of sketches, man-on-the-street interviews and other elements designed to be a cheeky version of a self-help series. Matthew Latkiewicz and Abbi Crutchfield are set to host 13 half-hour episodes.

“Greatest Ever” is a pop culture-centric how-to series on topics ranging from weddings to sports to cute animal videos.

Comedy Central is ready to show more of what happens when comedians get off stage, announcing Friday that it has renewed Jonah Ray and Kumail Nanjiani’s “The Meltdown” for a third season.

The series is hosted by the two stand-up stars and actors. It’s shot documentary style at the Nerdist Showroom in the back of Los Angeles’ Meltdown Comics and follows comedians as they experiment with new bits onstage and hang out backstage.

Season two, which was directed by Lance Bangs, featured performances by the likes of Andy Daly, Fred Armisen, Hannibal Buress, Abbi Jacobson, Ilana Glazer, Natasha Leggero, John Mulaney and Paul Scheer. Ratings-wise, It averaged 296,000 viewers (including 186,000 adults 18-49), according to Nielsen’s “live plus-3” estimates — not bad, given its late-night time slot and that it is a summer series.

Ben Stiller and Stuart Cornfeld’s Red Hour Films is partnering with Bold Films to produce a slate of new movie, TV and digital projects.

Additionally, veteran producer and executive Nicky Weinstock has joined Red Hour, which will be relocating its offices to Bold Films’ spaces in Los Angeles and New York. Bold Films will provide the overhead, as well as development and production financing on independent projects.

Red Hour, which has completed its longstanding first-look deal at Fox, has produced mostly comedies, including “Zoolander” and its upcoming sequel; “Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story”; “Blades of Glory”; “Tropic Thunder”; and “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.” Bold Films, founded a decade ago by Michael Litvack and headed by Gary Michael Walters, produced “Whiplash,” “Nightcrawler” and “Drive.”

Comedy Central has renewed “The Meltdown With Jonah and Kumail” for an eight-episode second season, the Viacom-owned cable network said Tuesday.
