Skydance TV Signs Patrick Massett, John Zinman to Overall Deal

Skydance Television has entered an overall deal with writer-producers Patrick Massett and John Zinman, the company announced Thursday.

Massett and Zinman’s television careers began with “Veritas: The Quest” at ABC, which they co-created and executive produced. They went on to co-executive produce the Emmy Award winning “Friday Night Lights” at NBC, “The Chicago Code” at Fox, and “Last Resort” at ABC. The duo then co-executive produced “The Blacklist” at NBC. Their most recent television credit includes executive producers and showrunners at NBC’s “The Player.” They got their start in film by co-writing “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” and their most recent film, “Gold,” was released in January.

The studio currently has several projects in development with the pair, including the first-ever live action television series for “Sword Art Online” (“Sao”), the massive Japanese novel and anime franchise to which Skydance acquired the global rights last year. Universal Cable Productions has renewed its first-look deal with Dark Horse Entertainment. As part of the renewed agreement, the studio has begun development on series adaptations on several Dark Horse comics and podcasts.

Among the new projects are “Tanis,” based on the hit podcast, developed by Lee Shipman (“The Son”) and podcast creator Terry Miles and produced by Sam Raimi and Debbie Liebling through their company Pod 3; “Mind Mgmt,” from Matt Kindt, developed by Dan Cerone (“The Blacklist”); “The Bright Sessions” adapted for television by Gabrielle G. Stanton (“Grey’s Anatomy,” “The Flash”) and creator and star of the podcast, Lauren Shippen; and “Flutter” based on the Lgbtq comic by Jennie Wood and adapted by Katherine Lindberg and Marc Rosen.

‘The Grudge’ Reboot Taps ‘Eyes of My Mother’ Director Nicolas Pesce

Sam Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures and Good Universe have hired Nicolas Pesce to direct its reboot of “The Grudge.”

Pesce, who made his feature directorial debut last year on the horror vehicle “The Eyes of My Mother,” will also rewrite the script from Jeff Buhler.

The reboot began development in 2014. The producers are Raimi, Rob Tapert, and Taka Ichise, with Roy Lee, Doug Davison, Joe Drake, and Nathan Kahane executive producing.

The Grudge,” starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, was released in 2004 by Sony as a remake of the 2002 Japanese film “Ju-on: The Grudge.” Takashi Shimizu directed both movies.

Sony released “The Grudge 2” in 2006 and “The Grudge 3” in 2009. The original, starring Gellar as a nurse in Tokyo afflicted by a curse, grossed $187 million worldwide.

Multiple projects to be announced in coming months, parties say.

Sam Raimi and his television producing partner Debbie Liebling have signed a multi-year first-look deal for television with Skydance TV.

The studio has multiple projects in development with Raimi that will be announced in the coming months.

Rami created cult horror The Evil Dead and directed the original Spider-Man trilogy.

His television producer credits include Ash vs. Evil Dead, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and its spin-off, Xena: Warrior Princess. He is also the executive producer of the Spartacus franchise that airs on Starz. 

Liebling is a film and television executive and producer known for Bridesmaids, Borat and South Park.

She most recently ran Red Hour Films with Ben Stiller and is producing Another Period on Comedy Central.

Sam Raimi and his producing partner Debbie Liebling have signed a multi-year first-look deal with Skydance Television, Variety has learned.
