Paul McCartney has written an original song, “(I Want To) Come Home,” for the upcoming Miramax’s new holiday dramedy “Everybody’s Fine,” starring Robert De Niro, Drew Barrymore, Kate Beckinsale and Sam Rockwell.
After attending an early screening of the film, McCartney felt a deep connection to the material and began writing the song that very night.
“Everybody’s Fine,” written and directed by Kirk Jones (Waking Ned Devine), is the story of a widower (De Niro) who embarks on an impromptu road trip to reconnect with each of his grown children only to discover that their lives are far from picture perfect.
Collaborating with composer Dario Marianelli on the orchestrations, McCartney has crafted an intimate song that compliments the themes of the film and serves as a final grace note to the moving story.
Reflecting on his reaction to the film, McCartney said,

Chicago – Stars Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey Jr. do absolutely nothing wrong in Joe Wright’s “The Soloist,” now on Blu-Ray and DVD, and there’s more than enough inherent power in the story of a musical genius lost to mental illness and the horrible way we treat the homeless in this country for a quality drama, but this cinematic solo misses too many notes to have the impact that it should have with this much talent involved.
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.0/5.0 The cast & crew list for “The Soloist” is remarkable enough that the film almost opened the AFI Film Festival last year based on pedigree alone. Then someone saw the movie and Joe Wright’s third drama (after “Pride & Prejudice” and “Atonement”) was pushed from Oscar season to April. We should have known something was wrong then.
The Soloist was released on Blu-Ray on August 4th, 2009.

The 36th annual Ghent Film Festival, one of Europe's leading film and soundtrack events, has opened up its composition competition to include young talent from the greater European continent. The contest, traditionally held as a exclusive Belgian-only forum for film music composers to showcase their craft, is part of a 13-day exposition of music and cinema.
The change comes as response from festival organizers to intensifying pressure from European composers eager to display their work in such a prominent international context.
Officially titled the Flanders International Film Festival Ghent, the popular affair has previously served as a platform for famed composers such as Angelo Badalamenti, Dario Marianelli, Gustavo Santaolalla, Hans Zimmer and John Powell.
Each applicant must be younger than 36 years of age and submit a soundtrack to accompany the animated short film "Food" directed by Maya Gouby. Each piece will be assessed by a jury of professionals from the film and music industries. »

Make this blog item your home page for the rest of Oscar day. Tom O'Neil and Paul Sheehan are blogging live continuously all day. Keep hitting "refresh" for constant updates about what's happening at the Kodak Theatre.
9:06 p.m. — As with all of the past seven Oscars held at the Kodak Theater, the Governors Ball takes place in the adjoining Grand Ballroom which is 25,090 square feet. The menu for the Governors Ball was created by Wolfgang Puck for the fifteenth consecutive year. He promises the return of old favorites like tuna tartare in sesame miso cones and Maine lobster as well as, of course, caviar. And pastry chef Sherry Yard will once more be creating her gold-dusted chocolate Oscars as consolation prizes for those who didn’t get one of the real ones. You might wonder why I present this interview with composer Charles Bernstein around Oscar time. While Bernstein, whose most popular works include A Nightmare on Elm Street and Cujo, has never been nominated for an Academy Award, he holds a number of important positions within the institution. He has been a member of the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences since 1995 and he was elected the Vice President of the Motion Picture Academy in 2007, which a position he shares with Tom Hanks! Apart from these positions, Charles has been chairing the Academy Awards Rules Committee since 1998, so I guess there’s no more competent person I could ask about the Oscar ceremony. We had a discussion before this year’s nominees were announced, but I’m pretty sure that you’ll find a lot of interesting tidbits in the following paragraphs which discusses the nomination process, »

Upcoming Film Scores lists the ten most exciting, promising and anticipated film scores of 2009, according to its editor Mikael Carlsson who can't wait to hear what will come out musically of these projects:
1. Avatar (James Horner)
Director James Cameron and composer James Horner are of course best known for the multi-zillion-whatever-megahit Titanic, but they also gave us Aliens in 1986 which stands out as one of the most exciting nailbiter scores in sci-fi history. On that film, Cameron gave Horner a pretty hard time as judging from the composer interview on the special edition DVD, and basically what you hear in the film is the result of a composer writing under enormous pressure. On Avatar, the situation is the complete opposite. A luxury in film scoring today, the total time given to the scoring process on this film will probably exceed one year! Horner is currently working exclusively on this film, »
