Get the forties look from The Edge of Love

21 October 2009 5:00 AM, PDT | Boxwish.com | See recent BoxWish news »

Often movies set in Britain during World War II are grim affairs. As conflict raged around the globe, glamour and beauty were two lesser sacrifices made among many, with clothing rationed and women donning trousers to help do their bit. But despite what must have been the bleak reality of life back then, a more attractive gloss has been applied to John Maybury’s 1940s drama about Welsh poet Dylan Thomas and the two women in his life. Of course, such artistic liberties are easily excused when the two female roles are played by fashionistas Keira Knightley and Sienna Miller. »

The Edge of Love - Blu-ray Review

27 July 2009 7:04 AM, PDT | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

A commendable effort but not nearly as effective as it needs or wants to be due to a sporadic tone, .The Edge of Love. relays the love stories of two couples caught up in a blending of emotions with poet Dylan Thomas at the center of it all. No doubt gaining a healthy theatrical push in UK due to the participation of Brit stars Keira Knightley (who reteams with .The Jacket. director John Maybury), Sienna Miller, Matthew Rhys and Cillian Murphy, the distinctly arthouse subject matter barely got it a second look here in the states despite the moderate marquee value on display. Admittedly, judging even via comparatively stodgy independent cinema standards, this pic can be somewhat »

Pete Travis is Set to 'Come Like Shadows'

23 June 2009 | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

- Originally set up with John Maybury in the driver's seat and with Sean Bean and Tilda Swinton in the lead roles, Come Like Shadows has resurfaced with Pete Travis (helmer of recent thrillers Vantage Point and Endgame) set to direct the pic. Scripted by Vincent Regan, Jennifer Lee Carrell and Nick Saunders, this is an adaptation of Shakespeare's "Macbeth", but it is designed to be user-friendly to a contemporary audience. The Hollywood Reporter reports that Smuggler Films' Patrick Milling Smith and John Hart will produce along with writer Saunders. Smuggler produced films such as Boys Don't Cry and You Can Count on Me as Hart-Sharp Entertainment. Who would you cast as MacBeth and Lady Macbeth?  »

'Pearl Earring' Director Webber to Helm New 'Wuthering Heights'

15 May 2009 9:02 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

News out of Cannes is that Peter Webber, director of Girl with the Pearl Earring and Hannibal Rising, has been signed to film Olivia Hetreed's Wuthering Heights script. The project's been batted around for awhile -- last year, John Maybury (The Jacket) was supposed to direct, with Michael Fassbender and Natalie Portman as leads.

But Hollywood is a fickle mistress, and Portman pulled out, followed by Fassbender. The newly minted version of Emily Bronte's 1847 tearjerker about the thwarted, moor-side love between heartstrong Cathy and her brooding half-brother, Heathcliff was referenced in the mega-blockbuster Twilight, so it only makes sense that this new version is patently aimed at that audience.

Now, instead of the more mature Fassbender and Portman, the principals will be played by Gossip Girl star Ed Westwick and Quantum of Solace's Strawberry Fields, Gemma Arterton. So think Twilight, only without the sparkly vampires and Mormon chastity vibe, »

Gemma Arterton And Ed Westwick Roam The Moors In ‘Wuthering Heights’

15 May 2009 6:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

English literature contains thousands of classics, but it seems that only three of them are regularly dusted off for a big screen adaptation: Emily Bronte’s “Wuthering Heights,” Charlotte Bronte’s “Jane Eyre,” and Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice.” All three are among my favorites, so I can’t complain, but it’s hard to see them redone over and over again just for the sake of casting the hottest actor or actress of the moment. This new “Wuthering Heights” is no exception, as Variety reports that Gemma Arterton and Ed Westwick have been cast as the immortal couple, Catherine and Heathcliff.

This particular “Heights” has been in the trades quite often. It originally had Natalie Portman in the part of Cathy, but she dropped out and was replaced by Abbie Cornish. Michael Fassbender (”300″) was attached to play Heathcliff; he moved on as well. The producers opted to go younger with the story, »

'Wuthering Heights' Finds a Helmer in Peter Webber

15 May 2009 1:12 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Peter Webber's directorial career includes the awful prequel Hannibal Rising, the forgotten Scarlett Johansson feature Girl with a Pearl Earring and a lone episode of "Six Feet Under" so I am not sure how excited any of us should be over the news he is directing Wuthering Heights, an adaptation of Emily Bronte's novel. About a year ago John Maybury (The Edge of Love) was attached to direct the film, but he has since dropped off. On top of that, almost a year ago exactly Natalie Portman, who was once attached to the film as Catherine Earnshaw, also dropped off the feature. Portman's attachment was, at the time, considered to be a driving force and when she dropped off the film's lifespan looked bleak. Obviously things have changed. Stepping into the role vacated by Portman will be Gemma Arterton (Quantum of Solace) with Ed Westwick playing Heathcliff, a »

Gemma Arterton Hits Wuthering Heights

15 May 2009 12:47 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

The casting department for Wuthering Heights can finally breathe a sigh of relief and put the kettle on, with Gemma Arterton and Gossip Girls Ed Westwick signing on to play tempestuous Yorkshire-based couple Cathy and Heathcliff in Ecosse Films' adaptation of Emily Brontë's romantic classic.Selecting the leads to play the stormy couple has been a fittingly overwrought process: Natalie Portman and Abbie Cornish were signed on for the role of the headstrong Cath at one point or other before exiting the project, and Michael Fassbender was also attached to play Cath's fiery lover Heathcliff before departing. Director John Maybury also left before being replaced by Peter Webber (Girl With A Pearl Earring).Arterton is 23 and Westwick 21 so, unlike previous cinematic adaptations, this Wuthering Heights will have a very Gen Y feel. "We’ve cast it as written," says producer Robert Bernstein. "Heathcliff’s a teen and the »

A long-delayed film is finally getting on track with a new director. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Peter Webber has signed on to direct Wuthering Heights.

John Maybury was initially attached to direct, with Natalie Portman and Michael Fassbender set to star as Cathy and Heathcliff, with Arterton and Westwick now stepping into the lead roles. Olivia Hetreed adapted the classic Emily Bronte novel for the silver screen.

It was said that with the new director and leads, production should start sometime this year. Webber's attachment reunites the director with screenwriter Hetreed, who they previously collaborated with on Girl with a Pearl Earring. »

Sienna Miller "Tortured" Into Giving Good Performance In Her Last Film

Sienna Miller was "tortured" into giving a good performance in her last film. The 27-year-old actress claims "Edge of Love" director John Maybury pushed her to the limit by locking her in her dressing room before one highly emotional scene.

She said: "The hardest scene emotionally, for me, was when I was crying and pulling stitches out."

"John locked me in a trailer with the saddest music I've ever heard and said, 'Come out when you're ready,' and kind of tortured me."

The director's tough technique paid off as Sienna managed to give the anguished portrayal of Welsh poet Dylan Thomas' wife Caitlin that Maybury was looking for.

Sienna Miller and Keira Knightley in The Edge of Love

Photo: Capitol Films John Maybury has directing films for some time, but it wasn't until 2005's The Jacket starring Keira Knightley and Adrien Brody that he popped up on my radar. I didn't particularly like that film, but I'm not about to throw a guy under the bus after the first go 'round, especially when his follow-up stars Knightley, yet again, along with Sienna Miller, Cillian Murphy and Matthew Rhys. While I would say The Edge of Love is certainly a step up from The Jacket it never quite manages to get over the hump as the story seemed almost too big for only one two hour feature. This film could have been a three-hour epic and Maybury certainly shot it as one, but the fact it works on any level is due to a great cast that saves many »

Charming Flirtation, But No High Stakes

Any movie that features Keira Knightley and Sienna Miller tak ing a bath together while talking about sex in adorable Welsh accents has its charms.

In the reasonably engrossing drama "The Edge of Love," the two beauties play rivals for the affections of the pride of Wales, Dylan Thomas (Matthew Rhys), during the World War II bombing of London.

Knightley, who plays a childhood sweetheart of the drunken wordsmith, pairs up with an army officer (Cillian Murphy »

Film: Review: The Edge Of Love

19 March 2009 11:55 AM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

While World War II raged across Europe, Dylan Thomas served the United Kingdom by writing scripts for propaganda films and reading his poems on the radio, though he struggled throughout with conflicting impulses. How could he support the war effort with positive messages, yet still satisfy a poet’s need to document pain and horror? In John Maybury’s period romance The Edge Of Love—written by noted British playwright Sharman Macdonald—all of London seems to be suffering a similar identity crisis. Rakish aesthetes are doing their part for the troops, while proper society types are behaving like bohemians »

The Edge of Love

Release Date: March 13 (limited)

Director: John Maybury

Writer: Sharmon Macdonald

Cinematographers: Jonathan Freeman

Starring: Keira Knightley, Cillian Murphy, Sienna Miller, Matthew Rhys

Studio/Run Time: Lionsgate, 110 mins.

While he plays a major part in the film, The Edge of Love is not a Dylan Thomas biopic. It’s a pity though, because pinning down what exactly the film is, or is trying to be, is pretty difficult. On the one hand, it’s a story about Britain during WWII, where characters are scrambling or ignoring bomb sirens and discussing enlistment. It’s also obviously a love story, focusing on Thomas and his wife’s struggles with another couple.  Everyone is attracted to everyone else and no character is above sleeping with anyone else regardless of the pain it will cause the entire group. When William Killick (Cillian Murphy) heads to the front lines, Thomas tries to turn the film into »

Knightley's Singing Terror

15 March 2009 4:05 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Keira Knightley was left red-faced after she was filmed singing in The Edge Of Love - because she "sounded like a pubescent boy".

The British actress was told she would lip-synch for her part in the 2008 period drama, in which she plays a lover of poet Dylan Thomas.

But she was terrified when director John Maybury pushed her into giving a live performance in front of 150 members of the cast and crew - and Knightley admits she had to settle her nerves with a little alcohol.

She tell's Moviefone.com, "I thought that this is sort of one of those horrendous dreams you have, you know, those anxiety dreams... And the first time I sang, I sounded like a pubescent boy because I was so nervous my voice just went sky-high. It was awful. And I could see all these faces going, 'Oh my God, you're crap.' So I had a shot of vodka, and then it was fine after that." »
