Running Late

13 hours ago | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

As we wind down to year's end, we find Michael Haneke's Cannes conqueror fashionably late to the party, while Paramount waited three years to release the Renée Zellweger horror flick "Case 39" and a mere half-century later, audiences will finally see the fruits of an unproduced Tennessee Williams screenplay. Throw in a pair of modern Korean films and you've got yourself an exciting way to start the new year.

"Case 39"

We can only hope it's no reflection of quality that this latest volley from the creepy-kid subgenre sat on the shelf for so long that its director, Christian Alvart, had another project (daffy sci-fi chiller "Pandorum") wrapped, released and mostly ignored before this domestic thriller even made it to our shores. The German helmer's English-language debut (at least chronologically) has Renée Zellweger »

Deconstructing the decade from 'Buffy' and beyond: Zap2it Hanh's favorite episodes

25 December 2009 10:30 AM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

Zap2it's favorite TV episodes of the decade series continues with my picks for what moved me in the 2000s.

Let me preface my list with a shout out to my colleague Rick, who kicked off the series with numerous excellent examples, ranging from "The Wire" to "Freaks and Geeks." I actually agreed with quite a number of his selections, but since this is a very personal endeavor, full of unfounded opinions, naturally I must include some episodes I feel he overlooked or at least didn't value as much as I.

Case in point: Joss Whedon. Really, Rick? How could an episode of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" not even make your main list and only warrant an "also" mention? Hmph.

My list:

"The Body" ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer")

Although "Hush" and its creepy Gentlemen freaked me out (and earned "Buffy" its only writing Emmy nom), it aired in December 1999, just »

The Notable Films of 2010: Part Two

16 December 2009 3:18 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Case 39

Opens: January 1st 2010

Cast: Renée Zellweger, Jodelle Ferland, Ian McShane, Bradley Cooper, Kerry O'Malley

Director: Christian Alvart

Summary: A family services social worker thinks she has seen it all until she meets her newest, most mysterious case - a troubled 10-year old girl whose parents try to kill her. The social worker decides to take her in herself until the right foster family comes along.

Analysis: Despite the presence of promising German director Christian Alvart ("Pandorum"), 'Case' has sat on a shelf since late 2006 and is finally being quietly shuffled out this year for one very good reason - it stinks. Having opened in Australia a few months back, reviewers utterly savaged the film as both incredibly dumb and utterly ludicrous. Lead star Renee Zellweger also scored personal criticism to a level rarely seen in film reviews outside of comments about Nicole Kidman's 'more alien than the »

Wff 09: Review of 44 Inch Chest

7 December 2009 10:33 AM, PST | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

Year: 2009

Director: Malcolm Venville

Writers: Louis Mellis & David Scinto

IMDb: link

Trailer: link

Review by: Marina Antunes

Rating: 8 out of 10

It took nearly ten years but the men behind Sexy Beast are back and their follow-up follows in the footsteps of their first film, a macho experience which is bound to leave audiences flabbergasted. If one manages to get over the often mumbled lines and the million miles a minute swearing, viewers are likely to discover a film with something to say but will it alienate a huge chunk the audience before getting there?

A sort of The Big Kahuna for the gangster wannabe, 44 Inch Chest stars Ray Winstone as Colin Diamond, a man who has had a bad day. His wife just broke his heart by leaving him for another man (though not before a confrontation that leaves their home in shambles) and Colin has retreated into himself. He »

Two New Clips from Case 39

4 December 2009 12:16 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Know what really scares us? Renee Zellwegger's face. She used to be kind of cute during her Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation days, but once Hollywood came a'knocking, it was a quick tug here, a slight injection there. Now she looks as if she's just constantly shitting out whole lemons. Where was I? Oh, yeah! We have two new clips from her latest flick, Case 39!

Check them out along with the trailer below, and for more visit the official Case 39 website. Still no word on Stateside distro, but when we know, you'll know!

In Case 39 Ian McShane plays a police officer who helps Zellweger’s character figure out the truth when she saves a girl from what she believes is an abusive home life only to discover that things are not quite as clear as they first seem. Evil may have something to do with it ... obviously, »

Watch This: 44 Inch Chest Official Trailer with Ray Winstone

3 December 2009 3:37 AM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

From the writers of Sexy Beast. That's the tagline for the film, which should help it do well in the UK. 44 Inch Chest stars a brilliant cast of British actors including Ray Winstone, Ian McShane, John Hurt, Tom Wilkinson, and Joanne Whalley. It's a conman comedy about British mobster who loses his wife to another man and kidnaps the other man. I can't tell from the trailer, but apparently the whole thing starts to go wrong in the second half. What I love about this is that it's kind of a British Ocean's 11 hybrid, but about a relationship not actually stealing money. I'm looking forward to seeing it - looks fun! Check out the trailer. Trailer Alert – 44 Inch Chest

3 December 2009 12:30 AM, PST | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

Momentum Pictures have sent us the trailer for Ray Winstone’s latest film, the awesome looking 44 Inch Chest, also starring Joanne Whalley, John Hurt, Ian McShane and Stephen Dillane. Directed by Malcolm Venville, 44 Inch Chest is a gangster film with a real difference. This isn’t about drugs, it isn’t about hustling, no, this gangster is going through divorce!

Colin Diamond (Ray Winstone) is in agony, shattered by the bombshell of his wife’s (Joanne Whalley) infidelity with a young French waiter. His motley crew of friends – Old Man Peanut (John Hurt), Meredith (Ian McShane), Archie (Tom Wilkinson), and Mal (Stephen Dillane) – kidnap Loverboy (Melvil Poupaud), and assemble a kangaroo court so that Colin can restore his manhood with revenge. A very bumpy night ensues for Loverboy whose life is at stake as Colin wrestles with heartbreak, anger, madness, love and gargantuan self-pity.

44 Inch Chest trailer: proof that cool does not have an age limit

2 December 2009 9:34 PM, PST | GordonandtheWhale | See recent GordonandtheWhale news »

44 Inch Chest is about a husband who, with the help of his friends, kidnaps the man that his wife has been cheating on him with. The film also features one of the coolest over-40-years-old casts ever – Ray Winstone (The Departed, Beowulf), John Hurt (V For Vendetta, The Propositon, 1984), Tom Wilkinson (In The Bedroom, Michael Clayton), and Ian McShane (”Deadwood,” Death Race) all have major parts and look very cool in the film’s trailer. Especially Ian McShane, one very smooth over-the-hill man.

Sexy Beast writers Louis Melles and David Scinto are back with another Brit gangster movie called 44 Inch Chest, featuring Ian McShane, Tom Wilkinson, John Hurt and Ray Winstone. Now that's a pile of grizzled Brit. I bet there will be some small amount of profanity. I'm not certain sure how the title plays into the plot (breasts, I hope), but there's definitely a strong enough cast and style to merit attention. The movie involves a London gangster (Winstone) who kidnaps his wife's lover as a »

44 Inch Chest International Trailer: Revenge Might Not Taste Sweet

2 December 2009 11:03 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

As I've mentioned before, I've been eyeing the UK thriller 44 Inch Chest for some time, in part because it's written by the lads behind Sexy Beast (Louis Mellis and David Scinto) and in part because it has a pheomenal cast: Ray Winstone, John Hurt, Ian McShane and Tom Wilkinson, for starters. Now there's a trailer, and it suggests that getting revenge may not be as easy as we'd like. Twitch pointed me to this initially, so hats off to them. This is a good complement to those odd character videos I posted the other day and obviously, as a trailer, it gives a much better idea of what's going on in the film. Basically, Ray Winstone's wife tries to leave him after falling for another guy, and he's none too happy about it. So he calls in a few friendly heavy hitters (well, friendly to him) and they hatch »

The Trailer For 44 Inch Chest Demonstrates Why Sleeping With Ray Winstone's Wife May Be A Bad Idea.

2 December 2009 6:31 AM, PST | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

What happens when the writers of hard edged British gangster picture Sexy Beast tackle family drama?  You get 44 Inch Chest, a story of marital infidelity that takes a decidedly dark and nasty turn.  Ray Winstone, Ian McShane, John Hurt and Tom Wilinson star in what must surely be one of the best acted, most incredibly sweary films to come out of the UK in years.

We've been posting a series of promo videos from this one over the past few days and now - thanks to the vigilant eyes of our readers - we've got the first full trailer below.

New Trailer For Ray Winstone's 44 Inch Chest

1 December 2009 7:06 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

While it was never really given a chance in the states, Sexy Beast is one of my favorite films to come out of Britain in the last few years. So when I learned that the writers would be once again teaming up with Ray Winstone and Ian McShane, I could only muster a simple thought: Fuck yes. My favorite reputable news source, The Sun, has posted the new trailer for 44 Inch Chest, starring the above listed as well as John Hurt and Tom Wilkinson. Excited yet? It gets better. The film centers on Winstone who, after learning that his wife is having an affair, decides to get his gang together to kidnap the lover and torture him. The trailer seems to try and keep the identity of the lover a secret, but I am really hoping that it turns out to be Ben Kingsley just so he can can call »
