Martin Scorsese’s period crime/mystery/suspense film gets a final poster via Chud. I guess the studio couldn’t be bothered to spend money on, you know, an actual new poster. Eh. Set in 1954, U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels is investigating the disappearance of a murderess who escaped from a hospital for the criminally insane and is presumed to be hiding on the remote Shutter Island. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, Emily Mortimer, Michelle Williams, Max von Sydow, Jackie Earle Haley, Patricia Clarkson, Elias Koteas, and Ted Levine. »

Summary: An American journalist, his cameraman, and a Georgian native get caught in the crossfire of the five-day Russia-Georgia conflict in August 2008, and then have to deal with their obligation to be impartial.
Analysis: A timely parable on war, or Hollywood propaganda filmmaking at its worst? Wherever it goes, especially in Europe and the former Soviet states, "Georgia" will cause a lot of talk and controversy as the incidents depicted are still so fresh in many's minds. Like all topics of the sort, it'll also have its strong supporters and detractors having opinions on the film long before a frame of footage is screened anywhere.
Shot on-location in Tbilisi, the project also marks a potential return to form for Finnish director Renny Harlin. Given the right material the skilled action director delivered three »

Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island, which is based on Dennis Lehane's novel, is a nightmarish, puzzle-box thriller. Although the film isn't set to premiere until the Berlin Film Festival in February 2010, an "unfinished" version recently screened at Butt-numb-a-Thon in Austin, Texas. Those anticipating the muscular noir of Cape Fear, which is what the marketing has suggested, should readjust their expectations as Shutter Island is a far creepier and subtler work that uses the collective experience of a generation of Americans to grapple with themes of delusion, loss and guilt.
Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a United States Marshall who, along with a new partner Chuck Aules (Mark Ruffalo), is sent to investigate the disappearance of a patient named Rachel Solando (Emily Mortimer) from a federal prison for the mentally ill on Boston's Shutter Island. Daniels, whose wife (Michelle Williams) was killed in an apartment fire, isn't the steadiest of »

Michael Caine delivers a master class in the superb Harry Brown. In 1971 Michael Caine starred in the cult British gangster flick ‘Get Carter’. In the film Caine plays Jack Carter a Londoner who travels to the North of England to try to discover the circumstances of his brother’s death. Carter’s mission takes him into the bleak, uncompromising and seedy underworld of Newcastle’s gangland. On discovering the suspicious circumstances of his brother’s death Carter is hell bent on revenge. It’s an early ‘tour de force’ for Caine who displays his trademark calm, understated yet perfectly measured portrayals. Lesser actors have tried to imitate it in Brit gangster flicks over the years but come up woefully short. Thirty eight years later and Caine is back playing Harry Brown. The setting is just as un-salubrious in the way of a grim South London council estate overrun with young »

Michael Caine stars as the titular character in Daniel Barber’s fast paced and slick revenge flick, which is centered on the equally awesome and ridiculous premise of an old age pensioner who takes justice into his own hands on a rough London council estate. The film begins with a very brutal hand-held camera introduction of a gang initiation, in which a youth is forced to take crack and then shoot a young mother in a park, before crashing his scooter, and dying horribly – setting the scene for the deeply unpleasant and dangerous world we’re about to enter.
Harry lives on the estate, visiting his comatose wife daily, but having to detour around the dark underpass that leads to the hospital for fear of the gang of kids who hang around and cause trouble. »

Michael Caine does his diamond-geezer, heart-of-gold cockney bit as Harry Brown, a recently widowed, former Royal Marine driven to despair by the young thugs terrorising the sink estate he lives on in south London.
The last straw comes when his elderly best mate is beaten to death by vicious, unemployed teenagers high on drugs. Before you can say Asbo or Bronson, Harry has acquired a little arsenal and proceeds to get medieval on the asses of the neighbourhood tearaways, whom he thinks worse than the terrorists he confronted in the services. This is a vigilante movie, impure and simple, with lip-licking bloodbaths and unconcealed contempt for law and order. It's better than any of the five Death Wish films, mainly because Caine is a very good actor and he pulls off some fine moments, especially when confronting earnest Detective Inspector Emily Mortimer.

Recently it seems every time we open a newspaper we are confronted with the words “Broken Britain”. Knife crime runs rampant throughout our streets and young faces stare up at us from the pages.
Teens are being murdered by their peers and neighbourhoods are being terrified by huge groups of adolescents that deal drugs and are armed to the teeth. This is very much a problem in modern Britain and it is within this world that Harry Brown is set.
I guess it can be said that these youngsters feel they have nothing to live for and the same is true of our title character here. When we first meet Harry he is essentially coasting through towards his own death. His beloved wife is dying in hospital and he spends his days playing chess with his best friend Len.
He lives on a crumbling, decaying London estate and is fully »

Michael Caine is one bad man. IGN’s got a new clip from Caine’s upcoming revenge picture “Harry Brown” (full trailer), where Batman’s Alfred trades in his butler’s uniform for a gun when some criminal types kill his best friend. The 76-year-old actor and Korean war veteran said it would be great way to give young people 'a sense of belonging rather than a sense of violence'
He plays a retired Royal Marine who dispenses vigilante-style justice to the young thugs who killed his friend in new movie Harry Brown. Last night, at the film's European premiere in London, Michael Caine called for the return of national service to give today's youths a "sense of belonging rather than a sense of violence".
Caine, 76, who served in the Korean war and did two years of national service, said he considered himself "anti-war", but felt a stint in the armed forces would be beneficial for today's youngsters.
"There should be a great plan to re-educate these youngsters," he said. "It's such a waste – they all feel society has let them down.
"I'm just saying put them in the army for six months. »

Michael Caine is Harry Brown. In a long and resplendent career he’s been Jack Carter, Alfie, Harry Palmer, Alfred the Butler and Austin Power’s dad, to name a few. The man is a legend and in his august years, starring in a film set in his home city, in which he kicks arse as a senior citizen dispensing some rough justice to criminal feral youths. Violent lives will meet a violent end. So goes the film’s message.
By coincidence, Daniel Barber’s debut holds a few similarities with Clint Eastwood’s Gran Torino. As in Eastwood’s final acting gig, there is something very elegiac about Michael Caine’s performance: all shuffling movements and sad eyes until he finds inner strength through violent means.
Harry Brown is a widowed pensioner living on a council estate descended into social chaos. It is a place where gangs loiter, rob and kill for kicks. »
