Phone Remake Finally Moving Forward. Happy Now?

It’s been known that Imprint Entertainment has been after the remake rights to the South Korean horror movie “Phone” since April of 2009, but it looks like they’ve finally landed it. The remake was made official today in South Korea, where the Imprint bigwigs showed up for a press conference with original “Phone” director Ahn Byung-ki, who will be following in the footsteps of his Japanese compatriots Hideo Nakata and Takashi Shimizu by remaking his own movie for an American audience. Says Ahn: “I thought Korean horror films would succeed in Hollywood once Korean directors steer the remake projects, just as ‘The Grudge’ and ‘The Ring’ series were succcessful.” He is, of course, referencing Nakata directing the remake of his “The Grudge”, while Shimizu did likewise with his “Grudge” franchise. It looks like things are ready to rock and roll for supernatural thriller Voice from the Stone as The Ring leader Hideo Nakata signs up to direct.
Expected to start shooting in spring-summer time, Voice from the Stone is adapted from the Italian novel of the same name and is scripted by Friday the 13th writer Mark Wheaton.
The film follows a psychologist who takes on the case of an orphaned boy who swears he will remain mute until his mother's spirit returns. The psychologist soon realises there is more than just professional curiosity drawing her to the child, and that she has been manipulated by the mother's spirit to bring her closer to her son.
The film sounds right up J-Horror-master Nakata's street. We look forward to being sufficiently freaked out once again with his take on the Italiano psycho-thriller.

Hideo Nakata, the director behind the Japanese version of The Ring and the English version of The Ring 2, has signed on to direct the supernatural thriller Voice From the Stone.
An adaptation of an Italian novel, Voice From the Stone follows a child psychologist helping a boy who promised his dying mother he would remain silent until her spirit returns.
The novel has been adapted for the screen by Mark Wheaton, and will be produced by Dean Zanuck and Stefano Gallini-Durante along with Oliver Simon and Daniel Baur.
Voice From the Stone is being made in a collaborative effort between Zanuck Independent and K5 Films. The two recently worked together on the film Get Low.
Voice From the Stone is scheduled to begin shooting next spring or summer.

Hideo Nakata is set to direct the supernatural thriller "Voice From the Stone." Nakata directed the original Japanese version of "The Ring" ("Ringu") and the English sequel "The Ring Two" starring Naomi Watts.
Mark Wheaton ("The Messengers," "Friday the 13th") has written the screenplay based on an Italian novel of the same name. The story revolves around a female child psychologist who takes on the case of a young boy who made a promise to his dying mother. The promise? He will remain silent until her spirit returns. Nakata is the perfect choice to helm this project. "Voice From the Stone" has a strong female character and a perturbed young boy at its core, much like "The Ring" films with Watts' Rachel protecting her young son Aidan (David Dorfman). »

For those cinema amateurs out there that think America has been on the cutting age of horror filmmaking for the past seven years, think again. 2002's The Ring marked shift in the film industry. A shift from thought and creation, to simply mining other mediums for everything they're worth (which so far has not been much). Japanese director Hideo Nakata is most famous for directing the original versions of the “Ring” movies, or “Ringu” as its known overseas. He loved directing ghost ladies who climb out of TV’s so much, he returned to the franchise in 2005 to direct the sequel to the American version starring Naomi Watts. (And, I suppose, the nice paycheck didn’t hurt, either.) With “Ring” still apparently popular (though I suppose that’s open to debate), Nakata is currently attached to direct the third entry, which is scheduled for 2011. Before that, though, Nakata is helming “Voice from the Stone” for Zanuck Independent. Variety reports that Hideo Nakata, who helmed the Japanese Ringu chillers among others as well as the American The Ring Two, will direct Voice From The Stone for Zanuck Independent. The project is based on the Italian cult novel La Voce Della Pietra by Silvio Raffo.
The story concerns a female psychologist treating a young boy who has vowed to remain silent until his deceased mother’s spirit returns—and discovers that the mother’s ghost intends to use her body as the vessel to live again and be reunited with her child. When Japanese director Hideo Nakata dropped The Ring on us several years ago, he basically introduced horror audiences to what would become to be known as J-Horror. Hundreds of films concerning little girls dressed in white with long black hair later, the man himself is ready to spin another ghostly tale.
Variety reports that Nakata has signed on to direct Zanuck Independent's supernatural thriller Voice from the Stone.
The film will be based on the Italian cult novel of the same name, and the story centers upon a female psychologist who takes on the case of a young boy who made a promise to his dying mother to remain silent until her spirit returns. Just in time for Halloween, Palisades Tartan has grouped together three of the most successful Asian horror films of recent years in one region 2 DVD collection. Although terms such as ‘essential’ are woefully overused when it comes to such compilations, in this case it certainly rings true, as the three titles are arguably among the most important and influential examples of the modern Asian genre – not least since two of them have been the subject of markedly less successful Hollywood remakes. Just a day after the first still came to light, the trailer for Fruit Chan's take on the Hideo Nakata tale Joyurei, Don't Look Up, has dropped; and it looks insane.
The story follows the slow descent into madness of a film director when malicious spirits from another era invade the film stock of his latest effort and open a window to evil!
