'Family' star Vergara: 'My accent is real'

4 November 2009 10:12 PM, PST | Digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

Modern Family actress Sofia Vergara has said that her accent is real. The Colombian-born 37-year-old plays former Married With Children star Ed O'Neill's second wife Gloria Delgado-Pritchett on the ABC comedy. She told People that fans are often surprised by the fact that she is not faking her enunciation when they meet her in person. "I go out to a mall or restaurant and when somebody hears me they'll go, 'Oh my God, it's your real accent'," (more) »

Buzz Break: V For Volume

· Here's Natalie Portman poking out of the letter with which she's best associated. (Just ask Zach Galifianakis.) Inside, she explains that famous no-nudity clause: "I'm not opposed to sexuality or nudity in a film, but I'm very opposed to pornography sites and you're pretty much giving them material if you do any of that." Take that, meat-eating internet-porn-trawling rapists!

· Kristen Stewart says her nickname for Robert Pattinson is Flippy, because he is severely unathletic: "He can barely jump rope...and god, when he tries to run!" At that point Taylor Lautner did a running hand spring into the interview, stuck the landing, flexed his abs and asked if anyone wanted a bite of his Met-Rx bar.

· Sofia Vergara, the actress who plays Ed O'Neill's Colombian hot tamale of a wife on Modern Family, often gets accused of having created a crass Latina stereotype. Newsflash: that's her actual voice.

She brings laughs each week on ABC's new sitcom Modern Family - but Sofia Vergara never intended to be a comic actress. She actually went to dental school. Here are five fun facts about the Modern Family scene stealer: 1. That accent is real! Sure, it may seem specific to her character Gloria's outsized personality but Vergara says her accent is the real deal. "I go out to a mall or »

Chazz Palminteri to play golf... on Modern Family

26 October 2009 1:03 PM, PDT | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

One of my favorite character actors will be guesting on an upcoming episode of Modern Family, Chazz Palminteri. And for a change of pace, Chazz will not be toting a gun. Instead he'll be swinging a golf club, and unless the sitcom takes a radically wicked turn, I don't think Chazz will be taking swings at Ed O'Neill's head.

On the other hand, things can get pretty intense on the links. In the episode, Chazz is golfing with Ed's character, Jay, and somehow the relationship between Cameron and Mitchell comes into play and there's a big gay understanding... or is that a misunderstanding?

Fall's best and worst: 'Modern Family,' 'Parks' and Recreation,' '90210,' 'SNL,' and more!

25 October 2009 5:11 PM, PDT | EW - Ausiello Files | See recent EW.com - The Ausiello Files news »

The TV season is only six weeks old, but hey, it's never too early to single out its biggest winners and losers, is it? That's what I thought. Here goes: Most Improved: Creatively Parks and Recreation: When it debuted last spring, Amy Poehler's workplace comedy was a snooze and a half. But apparently, while I was sleeping it got better. Lots better. What happened? "I don't think magical fairy dust was sprinkled over the show," co-creator Michael Schur says. "I just think we're getting better at it." Indeed, Poehler has dialed down her performance as deputy parks director Leslie Knope, »

Ed O'Neill shines on Modern Family

25 October 2009 5:01 PM, PDT | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

One of the true breakout hits of this fall season is ABC's sitcom Modern Family. The critics have been singing the praises of this show, and the ratings have been good enough that I will predict without equivocation, that Modern Family will see a second season. And Ed O'Neill deserves a lot of the credit.

I like Modern Family. I don't love, love, love it, but I like it. The guys that were together on Frasier, Steve Levitan and Christopher Lloyd, have given us something good here. It's not Frasier level yet, but it might get there with time.

If there's one part of Modern Family that has won me over completely, it's Ed O'Neill. You might think, well, sure, it's Ed O'Neill. But I have never liked Ed. I was never a fan of Married With Children. I loathed it. And don't tell me I'm a moron for saying »

Review: Modern Family - Coal Digger

21 October 2009 10:38 PM, PDT | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

(S01E05) I'm glad this issue was finally addressed. No matter what you see on the surface, if your older father marries a stunningly beautiful piece of... well, you know... like Gloria, then you're going to have some concerns. Especially if the old man looks like Ed O'Neill. Let's not mince words here, I love O'Neill but he's no Cameron!

As usual, there was a lot going on in this episode, but still plenty of rooms for laughs. We're five episodes in now, and Modern Family hasn't laid an egg yet. That's a pretty impressive performance out of the gate for any show. This week, we got the extended family together again, where they could work out some of those unresolved issues.

"Married... with Children" Then and Now

14 October 2009 6:29 PM, PDT | Getback - TV | See recent Getback - TV news »

On April 5, 1987, the Fox network debuted its first prime-time series, an irreverent sitcom about a highly dysfunctional family called "Married... with Children" (followed by "The Tracey Ullman Show"). The series ran for 11 seasons and was a turning point in the careers of actors Ed O'Neill, Katey Sagal, and Christina Applegate. Plus, it would forever change the way we heard the Frank Sinatra-crooned theme song, "Love and Marriage."

This week, the final season of the series was released on DVD. In the words of Al Bundy, "Let's rock," while we take a walk down memory lane with the stars of "Married... with Children," then and now. »

Forgiveness and Folly: An Advance Review of This Week's Episode of "Modern Family"

14 October 2009 4:02 PM, PDT | Televisionary | See recent Televisionary news »

In its few weeks on the air, ABC's warmly witty and imaginative comedy series Modern Family has quickly become one of the viewing highlights of my entire week, turning out some of the best crafted bon mots and well-constructed (if lovably flawed) characters on television. In the hands of its supremely gifted cast, the tangled relationships of the extended Pritchett-Dunphy clan are not only humorous but also touchingly realistic. They squabble, they feud, they make up, and occasionally they hit one another in the face with remote-controlled airplanes. The subtle beauty of the humor makes repeat viewing a necessity (blink and you could miss some truly stunning nuance) as well as a pleasure, making the Pritchetts one family that you want to spend time with week after week. (And really, I can't think of another recent comedy family that that's true of, other than the Bluths.) This week's hysterical episode »

'Modern Family' Gets Benjamin Bratt to Guest Star

14 October 2009 12:11 PM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

It might seem a bit gimmicky, but having familiar stars as guests on sitcoms still works like magic, and Modern Family's early success is certainly giving it some opportunities to the pool of talent at its disposal.  Tonight Shelly Long will guest star as Jay's (Ed O'Neill) ex-wife, who's just a tad eccentric, and Edward Norton has also been confirmed in an upcoming episode where he'll be the bass player in a band that performs for Phil as a surprise anniversary gift.  Well, you can add yet another guest star to the list as Benjamin Bratt has been confirmed as a future guest star as well.

Bratt will play Gloria's (Sofia Vergara) much hyped ex-husband, and the father of young Manny.  We've heard a bit about this character already, as Manny talks non-stop about how great his father is, despite the fact that he always seems to make excuses »

Shelley Long and Benjamin Bratt on Modern Family

14 October 2009 12:02 PM, PDT | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

I was already looking forward to Shelley Long guest starring on tonight's episode of Modern Family. Long is playing the unstable ex-wife of Jay, played by Ed O'Neill, who I also like.

Modern Family has been one of the best new comedies this year, delivering on the hype surrounding it by establishing an appealing base of characters. And yesterday, according to the Hollywood Reporter, Benjamin Bratt signed on to play Javier Delgado, the ex-husband of Jay's new wife, Gloria Delgado-Prtichett, who is played by Sofia Vergara.

Both are great casting, and seem to be a good fit.

Welcome to your Wednesday morning television briefing. Benjamin Bratt (The Cleaner) has been cast as a guest star on ABC's Modern Family, where he will play the ex-husband of Sofia Vergara's Gloria. Bratt is currently slated to appear in one episode of the ABC comedy series, where his character has been mentioned but not yet seen. Look for some friction between Bratt's character and Ed O'Neill's Jay. (Hollywood Reporter) Great news for Gilmore Girls fans. Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino will write and executive produce an untitled dramedy project for pay cabler HBO about the "complicated relationship between three adult sisters, all writers sharing the same upper east side apartment building, and their mother, a domineering literary lioness who reserves most of her affections for their ne'er-do-well brother," according to Hollywood Reporter's Nellie Andreeva. The project marks the first time that Sherman-Palladino has worked in cable. (Editor: I »

'Modern Family' Hires Benjamin Bratt as Gloria's Ex

13 October 2009 9:59 PM, PDT | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Jumping from "The Cleaner" wagon, Benjamin Bratt has landed on ABC's new comedy "Modern Family". He will be one character who has frequently been mentioned in the series but has not shown his face just yet. Bratt is none other that Gloria's ex-husband and the father of Manny Delgado.

This can only mean that Bratt's character will be in direct competition with Ed O'Neill's Jay Pritchett. In the show, Jay marries the much-younger Gloria and helps raises the only child from her previous marriage. Gloria in fact has been raving on her ex's physical abilities while Manny talks about how he admires his dad. There is no date mentioned in THR's report about the casting but Bratt is only confirmed for one episode so far.

Recently, it was also revealed that Jay's ex-wife, Dede Pritchett, will also make an appearance in the form of actress Shelley Long. The show »

'Modern Family' recap: Planes, big-box chains, and family ordeals

8 October 2009 7:14 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

While last night's Modern Family didn't quite make me double over with laughter the way its first two episodes did, it nonetheless pulled off the trick of effortlessly straddling the territory between absurdist humor (Ed O'Neill's Jay smashing a remote-control plane into son-in-law Phil's face) and genuinely moving (Julie Bowen's Claire giving dad Jay a conciliatory kiss on the head to thank him for an act of kindness toward her injured husband). Plus, it's not as if there weren't plenty of laughs in this episode, which focused on unexpected pairings -- Jay and Phil; Claire and her grade-school »

Ah, that staple of prime-time comedy: the dysfunctional family.  So many sitcoms take a swing at this formula and crash and burn; not Modern Family, though.  Modern Family has become synonymous with laughing out loud, the show is seriously that funny.  Beside the genius talent making it all work, the family itself is a definite refreshing take on the formula.  If you're not watching it, watch it – even if comedy isn't your thing you'll love it. Here are a few clips from tonight's episode to entice you further.
