Casting Breakdown For ‘Conan’ Remake

28 October 2009 2:22 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

/Film pointed us to a detailed breakdown for the characters in Marcus Nispel’s reboot of Conan The Barbarian, which is scheduled to begin shooting in Bulgaria in February.  Nispel brought us Friday the 13th (2009) and The Very Best of Cher: The Video Hits Collection.  If he can slip the right character into that “If I Could Turn Back Time” outfit, I’ll go see Conan in the theaters 32 times.  However, dress that outfit on the wrong character and who knows how many cities will burn?

IMDb lists Roland Kickinger as being rumored to play the barbarian.  You might remember him from such films as Terminator Salvation (he played the T-800’s body) and Lethal Weapon 4Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer, the gentlemen credited with writing Conan, worked together previously penning the scripts for Sahara and Dead of Night.

Jon Favreau to Direct Cowboys & Aliens

1 September 2009 8:09 PM, PDT | TheMovingPicture.net | See recent TheMovingPicture news »

The trades are reporting Jon Favreau will next direct Cowboys & Aliens, an adaptation of the Platinum Studios Comics graphic novel written by Fred Van Lente and Andrew Foley that is set to star Robert Downey Jr. Iron Man scribes Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby worked on the screenplay, but in the fall Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, who are executive producers on the project, took over scripting, along with Lost executive producer Damon Lindelof. The sci-fi Western explores what would happen if the traditional Old West enemies -- cowboys and Native Americans -- found the prairie attacked by aliens in mid-1800s Arizona. Downey will play a former Union Army gunslinger named Zeke Jackson. The story draws a parallel between the American imperialist drive to conquer the “savage” Indians with its advanced technology and the aliens’ assault on Earthlings, who must join together to survive the invaders’ attack. Brett Ratner Speaks Out About His 'Conan' Departure

21 August 2009 6:39 AM, PDT | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

He's already had his way with Marvel's mutants and he's about to dive into the world of Rob Liefeld's "Youngblood" (with Robert Pattinson at the helm, if the director has any say in the matter) but there's one comic book character that has eluded director Brett Ratner.

For some time, Ratner was attached to direct the upcoming "Conan" movie, which he described as neither an homage or a remake, but a new exploration of the Cimmerian's classic roots. But sooner than you could pray to Crom, the "X-Men: The Last Stand" director was off the project, with Marcus Nispel taking his place.

"I really wanted to do that," Ratner confessed to MTV News about his departure from the "Conan" movie. "I'm sad about it, because I loved the script."

Ratner's love for Joshua Oppenheimer and Thomas Dean Donnelly's script is no secret, as he explained to MTV News »

Remake Director Signed for ‘Conan’ Remake

12 June 2009 11:12 AM, PDT | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Marcus Nispel has been signed to replace Brett Ratner in the Conan remake for Nu Image/Millennium Films.  Nispel has a history of unwanted remakes, starting with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and the recently rebooted Friday the 13th.  He was also behind the generally hated Viking movie Pathfinder.

The news of his hiring originated at Chud, whose inside sources told Devin Faraci the list was narrowed to three and then finally Nispel.  It was later confirmed by Variety.  Conan’s big screen reboot was supposed to start filming in Bulgaria this August, but the plan was likely rearranged when Brett Ratner dropped out due to scheduling issues.

As for the story, there aren’t many details out just yet.  Nispel insists it will be failthful to the original source material, something he’s had plenty of practice telling the press.  Outlander screenwriters Dirk Blackman and Howard McCain were brought in »

Marcus Nispel To Direct Conan

12 June 2009 10:51 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

The Arnold Schwarzenegger remake/reboot craze continues to roll on with news that remake guru Marcus Nispel is set to helm the new Conan film. Nispel replaces Brett Ratner who recently dropped out of directing the film for Nu Image/Millennium Films.

In the past Nispel has directed the remakes of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Friday the 13th and Pathfinder so at the very least he knows his way around violence, gore and swords. Other directors attached to the project over the years include the Wachowski’s and Robert Rodriguez (he’s now producing Red Sonja).

Nu Image/ Millennum films hope to start shooting the Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer penned film in Bulgaria and South Africa later in the year.

In a strange case of irony Nispel was also set to direct the Arnold Schwarzenegger film End of Days in 1998 but he withdrew due to the ever popular reason of “creative differences. »

Marcus Nispel to direct Conan remake

12 June 2009 8:42 AM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Marcus Nispel has been announced as the director of the Conan remake for Nu Image/Millennium Films.

He will replace Brett Ratner who left the project last month over timing issues.

According to Variety, Nispel said he would blend his childhood imaginings of the character with the look of the famous Conan illustrations by Frank Frazetta, as well as the influence of viscerally violent period films such as Mel Gibson's Apocalypto.

Production is set to start late this year in Bulgaria and South Africa, from a script by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer. Nu Image/Millennium is making the film in partnership with Lionsgate.

The barbarian warrior was created by Robert E. Howard and debuted in a pulp magazine in 1932.

The character was previously brought to the screen in two movies starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, in 1982 and 1984, and has sustained appeal through comic books and video games.

Who's Directing "Conan" Remake?

11 June 2009 9:58 PM, PDT | Manny the Movie Guy | See recent Manny the Movie Guy news »

Since Brett Ratner said no to directing the "Conan" reboot, Nu Image/Millenium Films hired Marcus Nispel to helm the film.

This will be the third reboot in Nispel's resume. The director was also in charge with relaunching "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and "Friday the 13th."

Production on the remake is set to start late this year in Bulgaria and South Africa.

The script is written by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer, the guys behind "Sahara" and "Cowboys and Aliens." Wait. "Sahara?" Wasn't there a big drama behind that production? And "Sahara" wasn't really a good movie.

So...hhmmmmm...I don't have big faith with this "Conan" production.

The future of this action-adventure about the most famous Barbarian in the world doesn't look bright!

But, Nispel seems to be ready to give his 100% for this film. Variety is reporting that the director wants to blend his childhood imaginings of »

Hayden Christensen and Djimon Hounsou Taste Mandrake

19 May 2009 7:54 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Hayden Christensen (Jumper) and Djimon Hounsou (Blood Diamond) have signed on to star in Mandrake, director Mimi Leder's adaptation of Lee Falk's comic strip "Mandrake the Magician."

Based on an original script by Kevin Bernhardt, the film was scripted by Josh Oppenheimer, Thomas Dean Donnelly, Jv Hart and Ian Jeffers.

The film centers on Jackson Mandrake, who lives life on the edge. Working as an underground magician and escapologist, his act has grown increasingly dangerous. Following a daring escape from an SUV that has been dropped out of an aeroplane at the Burning Man Festival, he is coerced by the CIA into breaking a deep-cover agent named Xi Shing Lung out of a maximum security jail. Hypnosis, contortion, distraction and technical wizardry all come into play as Mandrake breaks the agent out from the inside within a 24-hour deadline.

But back on the outside, Mandrake learns that it was all a set-up. »

Hayden Christensen conjures his way into Mandrake

19 May 2009 1:40 PM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Hayden Christensen is to play a magician and escapologist in the new action-adventure film Mandrake.

The movie, which will co-star Djimon Hounsou, no longer has any link to the comic strip character Mandrake the Magician.

Christensen (pictured) was in Jumper and the Star Wars prequels, while Hounsou's credits include Constantine, The Island, Blood Diamond and Push.

Mandrake will be directed by Mimi Leder (Deep Impact, The Peacemaker) and has been written by Josh Oppenheimer, Thomas Dean Donnelly, Jv Hart and Ian Jeffers, from an original story by Kevin Bernhardt.

Christensen replaces Jonathan Rhys Meyers in the lead role. At one point last year, actor, wrestler and martial artist Randy Couture was cast in the movie along with Criss Angel, while Chuck Russell (The Blob, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3, The Mask, Scorpion King) was set to direct. The project has since had an overhaul.

Unless you are a comic book aficionado with a taste for Italian artistry, you probably aren't too familiar with the character of Dylan Dog, a ghost busting, zombie fighting, werewolf loving P.I. who has headlined his own self-titled series since 1986. Very popular in his home country of Italy and created by Tiziano Sclavi, Dylan Dog first made his American debut in a series of English-language Dark Horse Comics adaptations in 1999. Now, he will be making his theatrical debut in a new film directed by Kevin Munroe, the man behind 2007's animated Tmnt. Dead of Night is being produced by Gil Adler and Scott Mitchell Rosenberg from a script by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer. Production is currently underway in New Orleans with a release date set for 2010.
