A-List Film Composer Habits for Any-List Film Schedules

4 November 2009 10:21 AM, PST | SCOREcastOnline.com | See recent SCOREcastOnline.com news »

The Creative Process. It's a tough thing to talk about for me because my creative process (Cp) is in such a constant state of flux all of the time. From project to project, my Cp changes up drastically. And then sometimes, what worked on one project also works great on the next.

What I will offer today is a sneak peek into the creative habits of some of the composers that I've worked with over the few years that I've been assisting. From these great composers, I've gleaned many secrets, tricks, templates, skills, and techniques - some that I use in my own work, and others that I don't, but might someday. The thing that I've always noticed about each composer though, no matter who they were or what they were working on, is that these tricks and secrets were really "habitual" in their work flows. These are things that »

What Makes a "Great" Collaboration?

20 October 2009 10:48 AM, PDT | SCOREcastOnline.com | See recent SCOREcastOnline.com news »

This last weekend, a good friend of mine from northern California stayed with us for three days as he finished business here in La on a little festival film that I scored for him earlier this year. It dawned on me this weekend — as we sat around, drinking endless amounts of CocaCola Slurpees, and talking movies — just how much fun it is to collaborate with someone you also have a solid friendship with. Many great conversations were had, but one sticks out the most, and is an interesting discussion starter here:

If we didn't have our projects in common with our directors, would we still be friends?

As for me and my friend Scott, we really couldn't answer that question. Who knows? The fact is that we do have film in common, so the point is sort of moot. But that got me thinking about us as collaborators. What makes it work? »

Twilight honored as a “Film of Vision”

11 June 2009 4:25 PM, PDT | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

Twilight is a “film of vision” … um, really? Average reviews, and it didn’t explode at the box office, with a lot of staying power. I’m not saying the film doesn’t have a huge following but doesn’t that come down to two things … the novel (a fun read) and Robert Pattison (from what I here, he’s a looker). As always, awards are nice, and those who made the film should feel honored, but let’s hope The Twilight Saga: New Moon steps it up a notch. Here’s the news release.

“Twilight” will be hailed as a “film of vision” at the 36th annual Vision Awards, to be held June 27 at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills.

The event also will honor such entertainment figures as Lawrence Bender, Jim Walton, Matthew Weiner, Ian Sander, Kim Moses, Diane Ladd, Shonda Rimes, Jillian Michaels and Stephen Nemeth. »

International Film Music Critics Announce 2008 Nominees

16 January 2009 4:43 PM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

I don't believe I have ever reported the nominees for the International Film Music Critics Association before, but in the spirit of covering more award season news than is probably necessary I figured, "What the hell?" The nominees listed below make up the fifth annual International Film Music Critics Association Awards for Excellence with Wall-e receiving the most nominations including Film Score of the Year, Best Score for an Animated Film, Best Film Composition (for "Define Dancing") and Composer of the Year for Thomas Newman. The other big nominee is Danny Elfman who received the most individual nominations this year with seven: Composer of the Year; Film Score of the Year and Best Documentary Score for Standard Operating Procedure; Best Drama Score for Milk; Best Action/Adventure Score and Best Individual Cue for Wanted ("Success Montage"); and Best Fantasy/Science Fiction Score for Hellboy II: The Golden Army. Danny Elfman is Scoring McG's Terminator Salvation

9 January 2009 3:54 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Answer me this: Why do we only report that Danny Elfman will score a film and not any other composer? Does it had to do with the fact that Danny Elfman makes such wonderful scores? Or does it have to do with the fact that he always scores Tim Burton's movies, too? Who knows what the answer to that question really is, because here we are, reporting that Danny Elfman will be scoring Terminator Salvation. Ironically, it was Brad Fiedel, and not Elfman, who scored the original two Terminator movies and gave us that unforgettable Terminator theme. But Fiedel hasn't done any work since 1999, so Elfman it is! This news was confirmed by MTV earlier today, who talked with Elfman last night. Will he incorporate Fiedel's theme into some of his work, just like John Ottman did with John Williams' original Superman theme for Superman Returns? "I think »

Sound Off: Best Movies Scores of 2008 - What Are Your Favorites?

5 January 2009 1:29 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

I love movie scores. And even the best ones sadly never get mentioned enough. So as a way of highlighting some of the very best movies scores of last year, I thought I'd start this discussion today. I was heavily inspired by ScoreKeeper's Top 10 Best Scores Of 2008, which just hit this morning, because it features a very odd yet respectable list of great soundtracks. I won't spoil his top choice (you can find the list below), but it's definitely something that no one was expecting. As for my own favorite scores, well, where do I begin? Most recently I was quite fond of John Ottman's score for Valkyrie, but besides that, there are quite a few good ones to choose from. Before I get to my own list, let's look at what ScoreKeeper chose. We'll kick this off by checking out his list before we get into mine. You »
