Producer talks The Lone Ranger and Pirates of the Caribbean 4

6 November 2009 5:09 AM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has confirmed that Disney is moving forward with its planned movie based on The Lone Ranger, with Johnny Depp cast as native American sidekick Tonto.

Bruckheimer said they were now aiming for a 2012 release. Mike Newell - whose credits include Four Weddings and a Funeral, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and upcoming Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time - is attached to direct the feature.

Bruckheimer told Sci-Fi Wire that Pirates of the Caribbean writers Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio had worked with other writers and Johnny Depp on The Lone Ranger to create "something that has a kind of true-to-the-western [feel], but adding other additional elements like we did with Pirates so it won't be just a straight-ahead western."

As for the casting of the Ranger, he said: "We're still creating a pretty wide net and figuring it out. It comes down to who »

Jerry Bruckheimer Has Received Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Script

4 November 2009 11:55 PM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Collider caught up with producer Jerry Bruckheimer who confirmed that a script for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides has been delivered, keeping the proposed production start date of spring 2010 on track.

On Stranger Tides will be based on a Tim Powers novel of the same name, which follows a sailor who falls in with Blackbeard's quest to find the Fountain of Youth. Powers told The La Times that Disney optioned his book almost three years ago, but he was sworn to secrecy. Powers thinks that his characters won't be used in the script but the Fountain storyline will be.

I've watched all the movies several times, of course, and I think the clear thing they would use is the trip to the Fountain of Youth. My main character doesn't overlap with Jack Sparrow at all [in personality or circumstance]; they're totally different characters. I suppose they might overlap the Geoffrey Rush character Barbossa and Blackbeard. »

According to Sci Fi Wire, Bruckheimer explained that Pirates of the Caribbean writers Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio collaborated with additional writers and Depp to put together something .that has a kind of true-to-the-western [feel], but adding other additional elements like we did with Pirates so it won't be just a straight-ahead western.. Johnny Depp to Play Tonto in Lone Ranger Movie

4 November 2009 5:26 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

As long ago as March 2008, there was news that Jerry Bruckheimer was producing a live-action Lone Ranger movie and that Pirates of the Caribbean writers Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio were working on the screenplay. Not much else was heard of the project until rumors started circulating in May of this year that Jack Sparrow, himself, Johnny Depp, would be starring in the film as Tonto, the Ranger's Native American partner.

In September, during a huge Walt Disney Pictures media blitz, Depp was officially announced to play Tonto. Recently, in a group interview in Santa Monica, Bruckheimer said that the project is still moving forward.

Elliot and Rossio worked on that also with some other writers and with Johnny. So they're creating something that has a kind of true-to-the-western [feel], but adding other additional elements like we did with Pirates so it won't be just a straight-ahead western.

I suppose they might overlap the Geoffrey Rush character Barbossa and Blackbeard. The only thing I feel certain they will hold on to is the Fountain of Youth since they telegraphed that at the end of the last movie." Terry Rossio, regular "Pirates" script writer, »

Speaking to the La Times, Powers says that Disney bought rights to the book two and a half years ago, and requested that he stay quiet about the sale. At the time, the fact that it was potentially raw material for a new Pirates movie wasn't specified. (Wonder how much he got for the option? Probably not nearly as much as he would if that »

Capt. Jack Sparrow will sail again!

Although reports of a fourth 'Pirates of the Caribbean' movie have been circulating since last fall, it wasn’t until this past Friday that Disney officially announced that it is on their 2011 slate.

Richard Cook, chairman of Walt Disney Studios, was joined by star Johnny Depp at the Disney-centric D23 Expo at the Anaheim Convention Center. According to Variety, Depp, dressed as Capt. Sparrow, sailed onstage aboard a pirate ship, and subsequently announced Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides would arrive in theaters in the summer of 2011.

In recent weeks, there has been plenty of speculation about the plot and cast of the new film, which is being written by Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio. Co-star Geoffrey Rush previously expressed interest in reprising the pirate Barbossa, while Keira Knightley has stated she would not prefer to return to the character of Elizabeth Swann. »

Fourth Pirates Flick May Have a Director

31 July 2009 4:26 PM, PDT | TheMovingPicture.net | See recent TheMovingPicture news »

Rob Marshall, director of the 2002 best picture winner Chicago, is said to be closing in on a deal to helm Disney’s fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film. The choreographer-turned-director’s other credits include Memoirs of a Geisha and the upcoming ensemble musical Nine. Variety reports producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Disney have been meeting with a number of directors in recent weeks, because the studio wants to pull the Pirates film together and have Johnny Depp star in it before he does The Lone Ranger for the producer and the studio. It’s still unclear if Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley and Geoffrey Rush will also return. Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, who penned the first three installments, are currently writing the latest. The first three films grossed $2.67 billion at the worldwide box-office. The last film, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, was released in 2007. Gore Verbinski directed the »

Will Rob Marshall Direct Pirates 4?

31 July 2009 11:27 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Gore Verbinski stepped out of the captain's cabin for Disney's fourth Pirates of the Cariebbean film, but Variety's BFDealMemo blog suggests the studio may have a new helmer in Rob Marshall. The blog reports that "sources say unless things break down at the last moment, Marshall will be steering the pirate vehicle’s next installment." Marshall has three big features under his belt: Chicago, Memoirs of a Geisha and Nine, to be released later this year. Is he the man to steer the Black Pearl into safe harbor? That's a rhetorical question, really, because the series is almost a high-profile blank slate right now. With the storyline of the original trilogy concluded, Marshall and screenwriters Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio would be free to do whatever they like with the series. Johnny Depp is obviously returning as Jack Sparrow, and Geoffrey Rush has said he would return as Barbossa; one »

The Writers of the new Star Trek movie directed by J.J. Abrams have spoken about the lessons learned from the first movie and the challenges they face in penning the next instalment.

Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman admit they were were surprised when the film defied early box office predictions to become an international, critically-acclaimed smash hit.

Orci said: "We have agreed to write another one, we're going to start thinking about it any second now. But we're still just having a mental sorbet before we jump back in. And, you know, just seeing all the reactions to the movie.

"We want to make sure we take it all in and really figure out what worked and what didn't and proceed from there. But now that we have an open canvas, anything can happen.

Earlier this week, it was revealed that Walt Disney Pictures had already selected a director for The Lone Ranger film, which will star Johnny Depp as Tonto. It was believed that this move would push the fourth 'Pirates of the Caribbean' film back.

Meanwhile, ComingSoon talked with producer Jerry Bruckheimer to get the inside dope about both projects, and as it happens, both Pirates and The Lone Ranger are in development, but the priority is mostly definitely being given to Pirates.

"It's a great franchise for them and for us, too," he said. "We love the character and Johnny was really excited about coming back to Captain Jack. He certainly is interested in Tonto, but Disney's priority is to get 'Pirates' made first."

Bruckheimer added that Terry Rossio and Ted Elliot are "writing 'Pirates' as we speak," and that there is still a chance that director Gore Verbinski may yet return to the franchise. »
