2010 movie preview: 15 films you probably didn’t know you should be excited for

29 December 2009 9:37 AM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

A few days back John made the rather excellent list of 15 films that are sure to get audience’s pulses racing with anticipation for next year. Yet away from the marketing hype, pre-release publicity and away from the A-List names there are a slew of movies that, whilst not overly commercially minded, look like they may just be delightful. Some might be sleeper hits, some might not. Either way here is a list of 15 films, five each from the U.S., Asia and Europe, you may not have heard of to look out for next year:

The United States

The Fighter

Perhaps tainted by Christian Bale’s lost lustre or director David O. Russell’s reputation, The Fighter is receiving much less attention than I initially envisioned. Mark Wahlberg is to star in the lead role of professional boxer “Irish” Micky Ward with Bale as his half brother. The Fighter »

The Notable Films of 2010: Part Seven

29 December 2009 7:16 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Mother and Child

Opens: 2010

Cast: Naomi Watts, Annette Bening, Samuel L. Jackson, Kerry Washington

Director: Rodrigo Garcia

Summary: A tale of a mother and daughter, separated at birth, who struggle with the damage done by the most important person missing in their lives while a young African-Americn woman deals with an unwanted pregnancy and the adoption process.

Analysis: Scoring rave reviews in Toronto, the $7 million latest effort of Rodrigo Garcia ("Nine Lives," "Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her") once again shows off his skill at weaving multiple narratives together in clever and unexpected ways. At its heart it's an emotional family drama, but Garcia excels with his female characters which makes the involvement of Naomi Watts, Kerry Washington and especially Annette Benning thrilling.

The few criticisms levelled at the film were toward some pacing and credibility issues in the last act, but otherwise praised it for not »

Dinner for Schmucks

Opens: July 23rd 2010

Cast: Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, Zach Galifianakis, Bruce Greenwood, David Walliams

Director: Jay Roach

Summary: A renowned publisher encourages his friends to invite the most pathetic guests possible for their weekly dinner party. Just as they find the most pathetic man yet, the host is injured and ends up trapped with the man all night long.

Analysis: A remake of director Francis Veber's 1998 César award-winning "Le Diner des cons", 'Schmucks' is one of the highest profile comedies of next year with one of the strongest casts for the genre in recent memory. It also marks the return of "Austin Powers" and "Meet the Parents" helmer Jay Roach who has produced several films in recent years but hasn't directed since 2004's "Meet the Fockers".

David O. Russell Directing Pride and Prejudice and Zombies?

17 December 2009 12:32 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

The adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith's zombie literature/ mash-up novel Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is on track, with Natalie Portman cast as lovelorn zombie slayer Elizabeth Bennet. Portman, who's also serving as the project's producer, may have found a director.

Pajiba reports that David O. Russell is negotiating to direct and adapt the screenplay. Russell, whose next movie is the drama The Fighter with Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale, is an unusual choice for the movie, considering his infamous on-set rampages (which top Bale's) and his lack of experience working on horror or period movies. Russell's hiring, so far, remains unconfirmed.

Rumor: David O. Russell To Direct Pride and Prejudice And Zombies

16 December 2009 2:16 AM, PST | HugAZombie | See recent HugAZombie news »

File this under rumor for the time being, but it looks like Pride and Prejudice and Zombies may have a director. Pajiba reports that a "source" has informed them that David O. Russell is negotiating to direct and adapt the screenplay of Seth Grahame-Smith's zombie/literature mash-up novel. Natalie Portman is already on board, doing double duty as both a producer and as the zombie-killing, love-finding Elizabeth Bennet.

Russell's a strange choice, but could be a good one. As long as he doesn't lose it on set, which he has done several times before, he could nail the tone of the movie. Either that, or he could crush it entirely just like he wanted to do to Lily Tomlin's face on the set of I Heart Huckabees. For now we can sit back and await confirmation by naming other directors we'd like to see fill the void.

David O. Russell Helming "Zombies"?

15 December 2009 5:10 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Famously temperamental director David O. Russell ("Three Kings," "I Heart Huckabees") is tipped to be both adapting the script and directing the film version of Seth Grahame-Smith’s "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" reports Pajiba.

Reports last week indicated Natalie Portman is up for the female lead in the comedic undead take on the Jane Austen classic.

The choice of Russell however seems odd as the director has scored a rather infamous reputation for being difficult to work with. He also still has two projects currently in post ("Nailed," "The Fighter") that haven't settled on any release plans as yet. »

David O. Russell To Battle Jane Austen And Zombies?

15 December 2009 3:14 AM, PST | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

Last week we ran a news story that Natalie Portman was circling “literary mash up” Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Seth Graham-Smith takes Jane Austen’s much-obsessed over 19th century novel and adds zombie scenes. Simple. Whilst it might be as empty-headed as a freshly devoured corpse, it is at least tongue-in-cheek and meant to be fun (and funny).

Now, in an extra twist (that nobody saw coming!), Pajiba have it that none other than ‘Three Kings’ and ‘I Heart Huckabees’ maestro David O. Russell wants to direct it. An interesting project just got, er, more interesting!

Russell has finished his stress-free shoot on The Fighter with Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg, so he obviously wants to have some fun! Russell is prone to fits of rage and arguing with his cast. Rumour still abounds to this day that George Clooney punched him (allegedly) after he went into a screaming »

Pride And Prejudice And Zombies Gets A Director...

15 December 2009 3:09 AM, PST | Screenrush | See recent Screenrush news »

This story's so bizarre, we just pray that it's true. Various interweb sources are reporting that Three Kings and I Heart Huckabees director David O. Russell is in line to helm Pride And Prejudice And Zombies.

Following hot on the heels of Natalie Portman's appointment as the heroine of the piece (which finds hoardes of the undead invading the world of Jane Austen), the news that the notoriously fickle director may be signing up to slay zombies in olden times has us scratching our heads in disbelief.

Although it's technically a rumour at this point, we love the leftfield direction this movie is going in. Russell has neither worked on a period drama or a horror, so we have to hope that he's attempting to stretch out of his comfort zone.

We'll let you know what's happening just as soon as the whispers are confirmed, until then what do you think of the rumour? »

Russell Directing 'Pride and Prejudice and Zombies'?

15 December 2009 1:54 AM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Last week, Natalie Portman was linked to the adaptation of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, which, like the companion piece, Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters, is exactly what it sounds like. And Portman will co-produce, an indication that she's starting to expand her horizons a bit. This could be a project to keep your eye on.

And now the film may have just added a perfect piece of volaility. Pajiba reports that David O. Russell, a director actors either love or want to strangle, has been mentioned as the leading candidate to helm Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Russell is probably best known for his tantrums, unfortunately, because Three Kings and I Heart Huckabees - though they reportedly did have their share of tantrums - are awfully good movies. The guy knows what he's doing. »

Zombie Pride and Prejudice gets director

15 December 2009 12:33 AM, PST | TotalFilm | See recent TotalFilm news »

Last week we brought you news that Natalie Portman would be producing and starring in comedy-horror adaptation Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Well, now David O. Russell has apparently joined the project as director. He'll also write the screenplay. Russell will oversee the carnage as zombies join the cast of Jane Austen's classic and cause considerable annoyance for the Bennet family. Russell should suit the quirky material well. Having recently completed The Fighter with Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale, this should be...

David O. Russell Directing Pride and Prejudice and Zombies?

15 December 2009 12:02 AM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

David O. Russell has directed only one movie that I’ve seen, the George Clooney Gulf War flick “Three Kings”. It was pretty good, but it wasn’t great. I hear tell his 1996 “Flirting with Disaster” was pretty good, too, but I’ve never seen that, so I can’t say. Now there are rumors that Russell, who has just come off “The Fighter” with Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg, is in line to adapt and direct “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies”, Seth Grahame-Smith’s flesh-eating take on Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice” novel. The project has already nabbed Natalie Portman as its producer and star, and the signing of Russell could mean the studio is anxious to fast-track the picture. Is it a zombie movie with flesh-eating undead English folk? A period drama and love story with corsets and crumpets and all that other stuff British people eat? »

Russell to Direct Pride, Prejudice, Zombies?

14 December 2009 7:38 PM, PST | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

David O. Russell may be stepping behind the camera for Pride and Prejudice and Zombies starring Natalie Portman.

According to Pajiba, Russell is finishing a deal to adapt the Seth Grahame-Smith novel and direct the movie.  The period piece is based on the Jane Austen novel with a little added undead to make it new again.  Portman was set for the lead, Elizabeth Bennett, late last week.

Russell is a weird choice considering his notorious history.  He had a now famous argument on the set of I Heart Huckabees with Lily Tomlin, reportedly came to blows with George Clooney during Three Kings, and a recently Nailed fell apart in a financing meltdown and James Caan walked out.  At least he managed to get through photography on The Fighter with Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg without a hitch (that we know of).  How he managed that might be the greatest achievement of his career. »

Jane Austen Zombie Pic Has A Director!

14 December 2009 5:56 PM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

There are some filmmakers you feel are natural fits to the subject matter they tackle. Few could best Peter Jackson's vision for Lord Of The Rings. Jason Reitman was perfect for Juno. And then there are the match-ups that are so seemingly from left-field, your neck hurts from craning to see. Case in point: David O Russell making Pride And Prejudice And Zombies. But according to Pajiba's sources, that's exactly what's going to happen. Russell will adapt Seth Graham-Smith's undead-filled version of Jane Austen's classic. And then he'll direct the thing, with the recently-added Natalie Portman playing Elizabeth Bennett. It's certainly an intriguing idea (though, as usual, it's technically a rumour until the official announcement), and we have to wonder why Russell would pick it, having never worked on a period drama or a horror movie before. Which might itself be the point - he's decided to stretch out of his comfort zone. »

David O. Russell Directing Natalie Portman's 'Zombies'?

14 December 2009 4:32 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

If you were like me, and hoped that Pride and Prejudice and Zombies would be adapted as a straight-up period piece with a dash of Zombieland-meets-Mel-Brooks, prepare to have your hopes dashed. Pajiba is reporting that David O. Russell is set to direct the adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith's "book."

Russell doesn't have any period pieces or horror films on his resume, but I'm not going to hold that against him. Instead, I'm going to bang my head against the desk because the combination of Natalie Portman and Russell is sending Zombies straight into smirking hipster territory. Yes, it's a knee jerk reaction. Russell could totally surprise us all, and take a traditional turn. But considering the whiff of self-aware geekery that already pervades this literary trend, I can't see it going any other direction but deliberately quirky. Can you?

Oh well. It was an amusing prospect while it lasted, »

Pride And Prejudice And Zombies… the movie

14 December 2009 4:22 PM, PST | 24framespersecond.net | See recent 24FramesPerSecond news »

You knew it was only a matter of time. When the book Pride And Prejudice And Zombies came out earlier this year, it was mentioned on almost every corner of the internet, it being the awesome idea that it is. The books is a retelling of the famous Jane Austen novel. With added zombies. And now we've not only got confirmation that a movie is, in fact, in the works, but we've got some news on who is going to be a part of it. According to Variety, the film will star and be co-produced by Natalie Portman, with Donnie Darko director Richard Kelly also producing. It's also being reported that David O. Russell (I Heart Huckabees, Three Kings) is in talks to direct. »
