I thought we were having a slow news week, but the local film news really added up. Here are some of the highlights:
The Statesman's Out and About blog released the results of the newspaper's "Best Austin Movie Theater" poll. No surprise: All four Austin-area Alamo theaters were in the top four slots, although we're a bit disappointed that Village and its snazzy 4K digital didn't rate a bit higher. Bigger surprise: Tinseltown Pflugerville tied for fifth place with the Bob Bullock IMAX theater. Jette saw a movie at the Pflugerville theater in June and found the picture and sound quality atrocious -- some of the speakers weren't working at all. Readers, what charms of Tinseltown Pflugerville are we missing?Richard Linklater's latest film, Me and Orson Welles (pictured at right), now has an Austin release date of December 4. If you want to see it sooner, the movie will »

Here’s some inside baseball about Hollywood that your average moviegoer may not know: movies do not get made solely from investors or studios nor do they make money solely from domestic box office. A large majority of films, especially true indie films (i.e. no name stars), require the sale of their foreign distribution rights to finish the film they’re selling or to secure a profit that will provide investors with a good return on their investment. However, films with name actors like Liam Neeson, Julianne Moore, Val Kilmer, and Christopher Walken also have to play this game. Some movies do it by creating unofficial posters and after the jump, we’ve featured six of these posters plus synopses for films with name actors but are still trying to secure funding. However, this is no guarantee that these films will ever get made and just because someone made up a poster, »

“I’m hoping there’s nothing goofy about this film,” says McG, director of Terminator Salvation, “which is why I think fans were a little offended. ‘Why McG, why this guy who did Charlie’S Angels?’ It’s a fair concern, but I would simply retort that as a filmmaker, you always do what you think is right for the film you’re working on.”
With his mission in mind and haters on his back, McG set out to make a worthy successor to the Terminator franchise, along the way enlisting the services of Christian Bale (as John Connor), composer Danny Elfman (of Batman, Spider-man and Army Of Darkness fame), uncredited screen writer Jonathan Nolan and up-and-coming actors Sam Worthington (of Rogue) and Anton Yelchin (as young Kyle Reese, and also in this summer’s Star Trek). The film, currently in release from Warner Bros., takes place post-Judgment Day, »

The 36th annual Ghent Film Festival, one of Europe's leading film and soundtrack events, has opened up its composition competition to include young talent from the greater European continent. The contest, traditionally held as a exclusive Belgian-only forum for film music composers to showcase their craft, is part of a 13-day exposition of music and cinema.
The change comes as response from festival organizers to intensifying pressure from European composers eager to display their work in such a prominent international context.
Officially titled the Flanders International Film Festival Ghent, the popular affair has previously served as a platform for famed composers such as Angelo Badalamenti, Dario Marianelli, Gustavo Santaolalla, Hans Zimmer and John Powell.
Each applicant must be younger than 36 years of age and submit a soundtrack to accompany the animated short film "Food" directed by Maya Gouby. Each piece will be assessed by a jury of professionals from the film and music industries. »

One of our most constantly surprising filmmakers, Ang Lee fashioned one of his most commercially (against all odds) and critically successful films with 'Brokeback Mountain.' It was a film which garnered him a Best Director statue and went on to become a zeitgeist of pop culture. This ostensibly 'gay' Western is one of the best love stories to make it to celluloid in this past decade with all the repressed, timeless emotion that such an effort would require. With all participants firing on all cylinders including Ang Lee, a standout performance from Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal, screenwriters Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana, cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto and composer Gustavo Santaolalla, the film rarely if ever hits a false note. »

Radiohead's frontman Thom Yorke is rumored to be contributing music for McG's forthcoming movie "Terminator Salvation." Director Joseph McGinty Nichol said that Yorke may contribute a "couple" of songs to the soundtrack, reports Moviesblog.mtv.com.
McG, who is also responsible for the Charlie's Angels movies, said Yorke has expressed desire to work with Oscar winning composer Gustavo Santaolalla to make music for the movie. The announcement was made at the New York Comic-Con, which ran from February 6-8.
He said: "We talked about Gustavo getting together with Thom Yorke from Radiohead, which I thought would be very interesting. And they may still do a couple of sounds for the movie," MTV reports.
Danny Elfman began composing the score in January 2009 for "Terminator Salvation" that will star Christian Bale and rapper Common and will be released later this year. The American science fiction war film is set for release »

"Terminator Salvation" director McG has revealed his interest of signing Radiohead's lead singer Thom Yorke to craft songs for his upcoming action Sci-Fi movie. He broke the news during 2009 New York Comic-Con, which was held from February 6-8.
During the event, McG said to have considered handing over the entire score to Gustavo Santaolalla, whose songs in "Brokeback Mountain" and "Babel" received Academy Awards, and Thom. "We talked about Gustavo getting with Thom Yorke from Radiohead, which I thought would be a very interesting combination," so he stated.
Though interested to work with Thom and Gustavo for his movie's soundtrack, McG admitted that he has signed Danny Elfman, the man behind "Notorious" and "Milk" theme songs. On his decision, he said to need "someone who understood film as a whole and understood the delicate nature of humanity and the brutality of the machines."
However, his desire to include Thom and »

Terminator: Salvation has been in the news quite a bit over the past week, albeit not because of the movie itself. Perhaps in a bid to change that, the film's cheerful pyrotechnic director, McG, said at New York Comic Con this weekend that he approached Thom Yorke and Babel composer Gustavo Santaolalla to craft special music for the movie, which is scored by Danny Elfman. »

Ah, second Terminator: Salvation speculation of the day. Sorry. In this piece we have McG doing his thing where he talks about two incredible talents and his hopes to shoehorn them into his movie. This time it is Thom Yorke of Radiohead fame and Gustavo Santaolalla (Brokeback Mountain), who he is hoping will write some music for the movie. Danny Elfman is of course, still composing the score. "We talked about Gustavo getting together with Thom Yorke from Radiohead which I thought would »

As you probably already know, Danny Elfman will be providing the score for Terminator Salvation. At past events, director McG had mentioned that he at once point was considering having Radiohead, or more specifically front man Thom Yorke provide some score for the film. For some reason or another, the idea just never came to fruition.
But according to The Playlist, McG sounded a lot more hopefully about the idea during his appearance at the New York Comic Con over the weekend. Actually, he says that if it happens, it would be a collaboration between Yorke and Academy Award-winning Argentinian composer Gustavo Santaolalla (Babel, 21 Grams, Brokeback Mountain).
“We talked about Gustavo getting together with Thom Yorke from Radiohead which I thought would be very interesting.,” McG said. “And they may still do a couple of sounds for the movie.”
I love how every step of the way McG is »
