War of the Welles: Seven Actors Who've Played Orson

26 November 2009 7:15 AM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

Orson Welles' "Citizen Kane" is about one man from many perspectives. As a reporter travels the country in search of the meaning of Charles Foster Kane's last words, he hears stories about the man from wives, co-workers, friends, and guardians, all of whom see Kane's life differently. In the trailer, Welles describes the many dimensions of his character in the narration: "Kane is a hero, and a scoundrel, a no account and a swell guy. A great lover, a great American citizen and a dirty dog."

Certainly, Welles believed that one man could encompass all of these dissimilar traits. And in recent years, enough actors have portrayed enough variations of Welles himself to suggest that the acting/directing wunderkind, like Kane, was just as complex an individual. Some films have portrayed him as a hero, others as a scoundrel. Some, like Richard Linklater's new film "Me and Orson Welles, »

DVD Playhouse—November 2009

By

Allen Gardner

Watchmen—The Ultimate Cut (Warner Bros.) Director Zack Snyder’s film of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ landmark graphic novel is as worthy an adaptation of a great book that has ever been filmed. In an alternative version of the year 1985, Richard Nixon is serving his third term as President and super heroes have been outlawed by a congressional act, in spite of the fact that two of the most high-profile “masks,” Dr. Manhattan (Billy Cruddup) and The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) helped the U.S. win the Vietnam War. When The Comedian is found murdered, many former heroes become concerned that a conspiracy is afoot to assassinate retired costumed crime fighters. Former masks Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson), Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman) and still-operating Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley, in an Oscar-worthy turn) launch an investigation of their own, all while the Pentagon’s “Doomsday »

Blu-Ray Review: Denzel Washington, Tony Scott Take ‘Pelham 123’ Seriously

5 November 2009 9:07 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – When a New York subway dispatcher finds himself locked in a tense battle of the wits with a deranged criminal onboard Pelham 123, he’s offered this bit of advice from a seasoned hostage negotiator: don’t enter his world. The same warning could be issued to viewers intent on entering the world of Tony Scott. It is a cinematic landscape that is alternately marred and enhanced by Add.

Blu-Ray Rating: 3.0/5.0

With his ever-changing frame rate and rapid editing, Scott speeds through his story until he lands on a part that sparks his interest; often a moment of physical or emotional violence. This plays out in extreme slo-mo, halting the movement and blurring the action to such an extent that the audience feels like they have been punched in the head.

The Taking of Pelham 123 was released on Blu-Ray and DVD on November 3rd, 2009.

Podcast #126 - Taking Pelham, Then and Now

16 June 2009 12:18 AM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Taking Pelham, Then and Now This past weekend saw the release of director Tony Scott's re-envisioning of Joseph Sargent's 1974 thriller "The Taking of Pelham One Two Three," with Denzel Washington taking over from Walter Matthau and John Travolta subbing for Robert Shaw. We'll examine both the remake and Sargent's original, as well as taking this occasion to take a look back at another crime film from the era, John Boorman's "Point Blank," which itself was remade as "Payback," starring Mel Gibson. Movie Review: “The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3”

12 June 2009 6:04 PM, PDT | screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news »

Seen on: June 12, 2009

The players: Director: Tony Scott, Writer: Brian Helgeland, Cast: Denzel Washington, John Travolta, James Gandolfini, Gbenga Akinnagbe, Brian Haley

Facts of interest: Remake of Joseph Sargent's 1974 flick of the same title.

The plot: A New York City subway dispatcher is thrust into the middle of a hostage situation on-board a subway train.

Our thoughts: I didn’t exactly love Tony Scott’s “The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3” remake, but much to the film’s credit, it sure did entertain me for most of its running time. “Pelham” has its flaws, and the central plot could have been a tad more intriguing, but all in all, it qualifies as a decent summer thriller that mostly works. »

‘Transformers’ Star Takes ‘Pelham 1 2 3,’ Explains Color-Free Villains

In a few weeks, fans will meet Ramon Rodriguez in “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.” Don’t be surprised if the summer is soon claimed by the Puerto Rican heartthrob, because this week he’s also appearing in the John Travolta/Denzel Washington flick “The Taking of Pelham 123.” We recently caught up with Rodriguez and spoke to him about the high-wattage cast -– and controversial rewrites -– in the remake of the classic Walter Matthau-led suspense flick.

“Working with Denzel, John Travolta, Tony Scott, it was amazing; I got to work with Denzel every single day, which was an unbelievable experience — I learned so much,” Rodriguez said, beaming. “John [and] I would go back to my room; John would come over and we would just talk for hours — he was so cool.”

Shooting “Pelham” just before he went on set for “Transformers,” Rodriguez can’t imagine how he could have »

There are two conditions for getting maximum enjoyment out of Tony Scott's "re-imagining" of "The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3" starring Denzel Washington as a dispatcher negotiating with subway hijacker John Travolta.

First, try to put aside memories of the original 1974 movie -- "The Taking of Pelham One Two Three" with Walter Matthau and Robert Shaw in approximately the Washington and Travolta roles.

Review: The Taking of Pelham 123

12 June 2009 7:45 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

"How the hell can you run a goddamn railroad without swearing?"

-The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974)

"I got 99 problems, and a bitch ain't one."

-The Taking of Pelham 123 (2009)

About as loud as Joseph Sargent's original was lean, Tony Scott's take on The Taking of Pelham 123 is more indebted to his name than its own, all restless shots and relentless cuts, ticking clocks and roving maps, a stream of shouting and shooting and speed-ramping and slow-motion and all that jazz. The conversations are cranked up, and the confrontations are amped up, but to what end? Scott whips out the familiar frame-blurring techniques that have ostensibly served him well in the past, but his flair tends to instead rob a crackerjack crime thriller of an inherent momentum that has served it quite well over the span of almost four decades.Filed under: Action, Thrillers, Mystery & Suspense, Sony, Theatrical Reviews, »

Comparing The Takings of Pelham 123

12 June 2009 6:27 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Today, Tony Scott's rendition of The Taking of Pelham 123 hits theaters. Lovers of Pelham subway-related film will know that the movie is based on a novel by Morton Freedgod (psuedonym: John Godey), in which four armed men hijack a New York City subway train and hold its hostages for ransom. It's been made into a film twice before: Once in Joseph Sargent's 1974 film The Taking of Pelham One Two Three starring Walter Matthau, and again as a 1998 TV movie starring Edward James Olmos. As a  fan of Joseph Sargent's original film, I thought it might be interesting to compare his version with Scott's new version, as I think some of the choices Scott made are pretty fascinating. If you haven't seen the original, I'd suggest you watch before you read this, as I think it's a great film that still holds up today. For obvious reasons, this »

John Travolta in The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3

Photo: Columbia Pictures Tony Scott's remake of The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 isn't anywhere near perfect, but then again neither was the 1974 original. But that isn't to say the two films can really be compared. As a matter of fact, the only similarity the two have is the title and the plot device. Scott's Pelham exists in a hyper-real world we are told is New York, while the original Joseph Sargent film is New York. Scott's film has a wiped-clean plastic feeling to it while the original was down in the dirt and gritty. As for the characters, their backgrounds have been changed, while the overall story remains the same. A group of bad guys led by John Travolta have hijacked a New York subway car and a transit desk jockey played by Denzel Washington is caught between the hijackers and the cops. »

Denzel Washington Discusses The Taking of Pelham 123

11 June 2009 4:10 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

In his third film with director Tony Scott (Man on Fire), Academy Award winner Denzel Washington (Training Day) pretended to be a "regular Joe" in order to get into character for his role as an Mta dispatcher in The Taking of Pelham 123:

I ate a lot and kept getting smaller and smaller sweaters to wear. I spilled coffee on myself. I liked the idea that when they hand Garber a gun he's never held one before. He was an ordinary guy in an extraordinary situation with this cloud over his head. He didn't come to work knowing that he was going to get an opportunity to redeem himself. It was something he felt that he needed to do and as he got into it deeper and deeper, he went for it. Like Man on Fire, this film is a "reimagining" of a previous movie. The Timing of "Pelham 1 2 3"

10 June 2009 7:23 AM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

I first saw Joseph Sargent's original "The Taking of Pelham One Two Three" at Film Forum less than a month before September 11th. The theater's later revival of the classic 1974 heist movie unspooled two weeks after the blackout of 2003. The coincidental timing of both engagements reinforced what makes Sargent's film (with a script by Peter Stone, based on John Godey's 1973 novel) one of the best movies about New York City: a group of disparate Gotham cranks, weirdoes and hotheads come together in the face of disaster. The original "Pelham" may have been made during the era when President Ford told the city, reeling from crime and near-bankruptcy, to "drop dead," but the passengers aboard that hijacked subway car and the team of negotiators led by Walter Matthau's grumpy Transit Authority cop proved they weren't going down without a few up-yours to the quartet of hoods who messed with them. »

Exclusive: Tony Scott On Pelham 123

26 May 2009 2:50 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Tony Scott is back this summer with The Taking Of Pelham 123 and the director shared some interesting titbits with Empire on his typically kinetic remake of Joseph Sargent’s 1974 heist classic.Pitting John Travolta's remorseless hijacker against Denzel Washington's Everyman subway controller, Scott's Pelham originated with a call from writer and long-term collaborator Brian Helgeland. "Brian came to me with it. He said, 'Listen, I've done this version of this - it's not the Pelham you remember, but it's a version of it.' And whenever Brian brings me anything, I'm interested."As you'd expect, Scott's Pelham is a more multimedia environment than the original, with modern technology (mobiles? Bluetooth? live hostage tweets?) promising a more twisty-turny plotline and some major character changes. "Even when I saw [the original] back in the '70s I had thought it didn't make sense. Holding hostages in a subway - it's a cul-de-sac. »

Taking Of Pelham 123 Trailer Now Online

12 February 2009 11:10 PM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Heck of a week for getting our first look at Tony Scott’s The Taking Of Pelham 123 – first came the launch of the movie’s poster, and now the trailer for the Denzel Washington/John Travolta thriller has gone live over at Yahoo! Movies. The remake of Joseph Sargent’s 1974 heist thriller, The Taking Of Pelham One Two Three, Scott’s modern update sees Washington’s Everyman New York subway controller go head-to-head with Travolta’s psycho criminal, after the latter hijacks a subway train. The original, which pitted Walter Matthau against Robert Shaw’s cold-blooded Mr. Blue, was an undeniably tense, but playful affair. The remake, apart from one brief exchange between Washington’s character and his wife regarding milk, seems to be a much more intense, serious and, dare we say, dour affair. It’s very Tony Scott, with jazzy, flashy camerawork and whiplash editing, and clearly »

The Taking Of Pelham 123 Poster Online

10 February 2009 11:27 AM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

The first poster for Tony Scott’s The Taking Of Pelham 123 has just gone online over at joblo.com – and it’s a mean and moody affair. The movie, a remake of the 1974 Joseph Sargent classic, The Taking Of Pelham One Two Three, sees John Travolta play a villain who hijacks a subway train – the aforementioned Pelham 123 – along with his gang of high-class crooks. And the only person who can stop them, as it turns out, is Denzel Washington’s Mta train dispatcher. The original is a belter, pitting Walter Matthau against Robert Shaw, but this is a pairing that could be equally compelling. Certainly, the poster successfully conveys the basic premise: it’s Washington, in geeky glasses and an Inside Man goatee, vs Travolta, who looks lived-in, pissed-off and so tough he can even pull off a Village People moustache.Click the image above to view larger version on JoBlo. »

Denzel, Travolta in 'Taking of Pelham 123' Poster

10 February 2009 10:33 AM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

There's a brand new poster for the remake The Taking of Pelham 123, starring Denzel Washington and John Travolta. The Tony Scott flick is a remake of a 1974 Joseph Sargent movie, and with no malice intended for its stars, Walter Matthau and Robert Shaw, I think audiences will probably be more in tune with Denzel and Tron Javolta. Just a hunch.

The movie is exactly what it sounds like - a hijacking. That was much bigger doings back in the 70s, anyway, with D.B. Cooper jumping out of airplanes and everything. But here, it's a train robbery; Travolta and his crew demand money from the train's passengers, and even while Denzel is negotiating the safe release of those passengers, the question of how the bad guys will escape keeps coming up.

Brian Helgeland wrote the script, and he's just aces with stuff like this, and Denzel is teamed up again with Tony Scott, »
