It's no exaggeration to say that Bryce Dallas Howard has had quite a strange road to "stardom." Especially considering she's the daughter of Oscar-winning director Ron Howard. Her big break came in M. Night Shyamalan's "The Village" and she followed that up by starring in Lars Von Trier's "Manderlay." She then reunited with Shyamalan for "Lady in the Water" which was "supposed" to take her to the A-list. Unfortunately, it was the biggest critical and commercial bomb of the filmmaker's career. She recovered bit with raves for her work in Kenneth Branagh's HBO adaptation of William Shakespeare's "As You Like it," »

The first decade of the new millennium has come to an end, and that means it is now time for film sites all over the web to begin posting their various retrospectives and lists recalling the decade that was. I generally as a rule dislike such lists because they are always so subjective. Then I said screw it and took it upon myself to do one of my own naming the ten worst horror movies of the past decade. Besides, people love bitching on the Internet about lists like this, and who am I to deny readers yet another excuse to get into pointless flame wars over personal opinions.
Of course, this list is just my personal opinion which is not legally binding ... unless Proposition 304 passes. And we all pray that it will.
I set two rules when putting this list together: Only horror movies that received fairly wide theatrical »

A best of the decade list is an incredible thing to consider. The Aughts were ripe with imagination and originality. The past ten years also came jam packed with many new visionary directors that changed the cinematic landscape forever. Yet, at the same time, it was also a decade wrought with remakes, rip-offs, ten-year late sequels, and films based on preexisting toy properties, comic books, and amusement park rides. George Lucas offended almost everyone by dusting off his Star Wars mythos and adding copious amounts of CGI to it. And Batman, a caped figure in tights who last flourished in the trippy sixties, managed to crawl head and shoulders above the rest at the box office to be crowned king. Thus proving that the so-called "geek" or "fanboy" truly ruled the silver screen over the course of this tumultuous past decade. Today, we look at the ten films that ruled »

There were a lot of bad movies released during the past decade. That’s not anything that distinguishes the aughts from any other decade before it, but then most of these movies were bad in the usual, torturous ways. There is, of course, a lot of room for debate over these picks and readers should be aware that for my own sanity (sorry Rob Schneider), I purposefully skipped many top contenders. Without further ado, in descending order, our worst 15: The Dukes of Hazzard (2005) I’m not a fan of movies about really stupid people behaving stupidly, and that’s all that happens in this smoldering pile of TV adapted junk. Johnny Knoxville and Seann William Scott indulge their worst instincts in a laugh free assemblage of moronic Southern stereotypes and car crashes that’s like a horrible, Z grade 80s comedy nightmare come to life. It’s even got Burt Reynolds. Lady in the Water »

They can be harmful. They can be helpful. They can be annoying as all get-out. The film world has given us everything in the spectrum of ghost virtue from Bruce Willis to the creepy girl from Ringu. Today, in honor of The Lovely Bones, we salute the good guys, the friendly ghosts who ride high along with Casper in the act of moral solidarity.
10. Heart And Souls
Anything starring Robert Downey, Jr. is worth checking out in my book, but this comedy was surprisingly enjoyable. Downey plays a guy used by four ghosts to reconcile their lives before moving on into the afterlife. The catch is, Downey is less than enthusiastic, but finds himself the catalyst for something bigger than himself and goes along for the ride. The cast is comprised of several well-known actors making the film that much more enjoyable.

You've seen Zooey Deschanel as a blonde before, most memorably for the modern holiday classic Elf, but you still might not recognize her in this new print ad for Absolut Vodka. In fact, she looks kind of like Hilary Duff as the sci-fi go-go girl promoting an Absolut-brand cosmopolitan. Regardless of who she resembles, though, the ad puts it into my head that Deschanel might be perfect for that remake of Barbarella -- if currently attached director Robert Luketic doesn't go with regular collaborator Kate Bosworth. In general, I'm reminded that everyone's favorite Mpdg (manic pixie dream girl) needs to do more science fiction, even if she seemed all wrong for her Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy role and even if she need never work for M. Night Shyamalan again.
Deschanel's single Absolut ad is part of a campaign that also sees Kate Beckinsale in three different spots, including one »

[Ignore the byline on this one, it's actually a repost of something put up by Simon Laperriere, I've just relocated it.]
Calling all supporters of indie cinema ! If you want to witness something unique, amazing and a true tour de force of imagination and passion, you should seek for the brand new DVD release of The End.
Produced in 2007, this strange mixture of Shakespeare and Charlie Kaufman played at both Cinequest and Fantasia the year after where it met success with the audience and the press. I'll admit being responsible for its showing at Montreal, but this is a film I adore and if you miss it, now is the chance to discover it. Can't really tell you why it's great, so I'll let the press release tell you more about this gem of low budget wonder.
(And by the way, I had no idea Cinequest had their own DVD label. Hopefully, more indie films will become widely available thanks to this initiative.)

Producer Frank Marshall Tweeted late last week that the anticipated first full trailer for M. Night Shyamalan's Avatar: The Last Airbender has been delayed from debuting this month all the way to February.
The reasoning behind the delay per Marshall's Tweet is that Ilm has not finished enough shots despite the effects being on schedule. That makes some sense given it is an effects-heavy film but if so is atrocious planning on Shyamalan's part.
I'm thinking there might be more to the delay than some missing CGI. Pure speculation here, but Fox might be waiting for James Cameron's Avatar to come and go before unspooling the first full look at Night Shyamalan's flick which shares the same name. The last thing Fox needs is their film getting lost in consumer confusion.
So for now, The Last Airbender teaser trailer and fuzzy character images will have to suffice. »

Anybody who remembers Clarence showing Alabama the first issue of Spider-Man in True Romance, recalls Bill explaining Superman’s critique on the human race to The Bride in Kill Bill Vol. 2, or was aware that the Silver Surfer argument in Crimson Tide is courtesy of an uncredited Quentin Tarantino rewrite, should know that Qt is somewhat of a comic book fan. Tarantino has now told MTV that Inglourious Basterds was heavily influenced by Marvel Comics’ Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos.
Aside from the one scene he directed in Sin City, I’ve often wondered why this great director has not taken the opportunity to direct a comic book based film in an era where superheroes have dominated the box office. There have been so many bad comic book films made by directors who do not appreciate the source material they are working from, that I would like to see »

A quick update on M. Night Shyamalan’s next film, The Last Airbender. A full-length theater trailer was expected to play sometime this holiday season in preparation for its July 2010 bow, but producer Frank Marshall says it will be delayed.
In a Tweet on Thursday, Marshall said “Not enough Ilm [Industrial Light & Magic, the effects company] shots finished, so Last Airbender trailer will not debut until Feb…”
This means the trailer will probably be attached to prints of Fox’s Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief on February 12. You can watch the teaser trailer here, in case you missed it.
For fans of the animated television series eagerly awaiting the live-action version, Variety did a short piece on Noah Ringer, the 12-year-old actor who portrays Aang. Shyamalan reportedly searched for a year to find the right person before choosing Ringer from a martial arts demonstration video he sent from Dallas. The pre-teen has a black belt in tae kwon do, »

Uber producer Frank Marshall has tweeted that the second (and we presume, first full) trailer for M. Night Shyamalan’s “The Last Airbender” (goodbye, “Avatar” in the title) has been pushed back from its original Christmas premiere to sometime in February of 2010. The culprit: a lack of finished shots from the blokes over at George Lucas’ Industrial Lights and Magic, who are doing the special effects for the movie. Not enough Ilm shots finished, so Last Airbender trailer will not debut until Feb… So, here’s the original teaser trailer released sometime back to keep you occupied until February. »

M. Night Shyamalan’s adaptation of the hit cartoon series Avatar: The Last Airbender is one of my most anticipated films of 2010. The film, titled The Last Airbender to avoid confusion with a certain other movie coming out in two weeks, premiered a teaser trailer this summer but we’ve not seen anything major since.
The Last Airbender marks not only the largest-scale production for writer/director Shyamalan, but the first time he steps out from his trend of original work to direct an adaptation of an established and popular franchise. I for one, think this is fantastic for fans of the series and moviegoers alike.
In August, we heard from producer Frank Marshall that they were working on a trailer for Christmas, likely to be attached to Avatar or Sherlock Holmes but now comes news that it won’t be happening.
On Twitter (again), Marshall updated eager fans with »

Don.t expect any holiday gifts from Frank Marshall. The producer tweeted that we.ll have to wait until February for the debut of The Last Airbender trailer. The tweet reads, .Not enough Ilm shots finished, so Last Airbender trailer will not debut until Feb.... Ilm stands for Industrial Light & Magic, the film.s special effects company. So, clearly, they don.t have enough visual effects to put together the Christmas trailer promised. I can.t help but to wonder if the delay has something to do with the December 18th release of Avatar. Perhaps, director M. Night Shyamalan and his crew are concerned James Cameron.s masterpiece will steal their thunder. Okay, that seems sensible, but the longer they wait, the further its. separated from this summer.s teaser trailer. Will anyone except fans of the animated series even care by then? As long as the additional work time »

From the days back in the 1950s when James Arness played a walking space vegetable in The Thing, the alien invasion genre has been a successful one for Hollywood. And if there's gold to still be mined in those storytelling hills, why not? Steven Spielberg has given us his version of War of the Worlds, M. Night Shyamalan made a nicely told chiller about one family staying alive in Signs (which is still a decent enough movie if you stop it 10 minutes before the end of the film.) Both of those pictures went on to make over $200 million dollars at the domestic box office; more importantly they proved to the Hollywood bean counters that audiences will still pay to see the Earth get mean new landlords from beyond the stars. Right now Columbia Pictures is about to go into production with Battle: Los Angeles, Twilight author Stephanie Meyer's The »

Back in October we covered Paranormal Activity director Oren Peli was going to follow up his much loved, much hyped debut with Area 51. Using the same “lost footage” narrative, Area 51 follows the story of three teenagers who join forces to break into the famous Area 51 base armed with a camera. Nice little plot line to say the least, as Area 51 has been a constant source of interest for conspiracy theorists all over the world.
Now, with the huge success of Paranormal Activity it seems Paramount have picked up the rights to distribute Area 51. Eager to cash in on a director that is the talk of the town, it’s a no-brainer why they decided to back his next project. Using the same visual style and staying within the sci-fi genre this should be a massive success when it’s finally released.
