I have always struggled with the notion that perhaps movies, as a whole, are getting worse. As anyone who has seen what’s been playing for the past ten years will notice, there’s plenty of evidence to indicate that the brightness from the moving pictures is getting darker. Screenwriters and directors are sticking to formulas when hesitant to experiment with their creative juices, and at the same time, big studios are playing it safe by adapting anything in sight. But while many movies crowd up the marquee like a group of regular students with satisfying GPAs, cinema has still been able to continue thanks to true poindexters of the art, those who craft experiences so fulfilling and basically perfect that the deconstruction of “the movies” seems to still be a myth. Baltimore, Maryland has a lot of nicknames. B-More. Charm City. The City That Reads. Bodymore, Murderland. Monument City. The lively city has given the world Baltimore club music, former Vice President Spiro Agnew, David Byrne, Parker Posey, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Upton Sinclair and filmmaker John Waters, and it was officially established on this day in 1729. Perhaps the city's greatest cultural contribution (in this millennium, anyway) was providing a setting and inspiration for "The Wire," the shockingly gritty and realistic HBO series that portrayed the struggle between law enforcement, government and the drug lords who threaten everyday life. It was an incredibly complex, subtle show that built a remarkably deep tapestry of characters and locations that reflected Baltimore better than any piece of fiction has ever depicted a city (for better or worse, of course).

The Relevant Stage Theatre Company (Trs) will present a visionary musical adaptation of Upton Sinclair's 1924 play, "Singing Jailbirds". The new production titled, Upton Sinclair'S Singing Jailbirds: The Musical will feature a large cast of performers. The story is set in 1920's San Pedro, the Port Town of Los Angeles amid the demonstrations of union activists during the worker's movement. »
