Dune remake reportedly gets new director

4 hours ago | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

A New director is reported to have signed on for the planned remake of Frank Herbert's classic sci-fi novel Dune, following the departure of Peter Berg in October.

Berg became involved with the project in March 2008. His exit came as a surprise because a month beforehand he had confirmed he was still on board, amid speculation that Twilight star Robert Pattinson was in line for the lead role of Paul Atreides.

Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers, The Descent, Doomsday) and District 9 filmmaker Neill Blomkamp were rumoured to be the contenders to step into the hotseat, although the latter has made clear his aversion to big-budget spectacles.

Now, according to Entertainment Weekly, Paramount has hired Taken director Pierre Morel to get things moving again on the new Dune film.

The French filmmaker apparently wants to make a very faithful adaptation of Herbert's sprawling epic. Paramount production chief Adam Goodman has »

District 9 Director Neill Blomkamp Talks About His Next Project, Making Movies on a Budget, and What the Future Holds

22 hours ago | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

If you were among the masses that made District 9 one of last summer’s sleeper hits, you’ll be pleased to know that director Neill Blomkamp has more sci-fi awesomeness on the way. Unfortunately, that’s all we know at this point. In an interview at La Times’ Hero Complex blog, Blomkamp was pretty much mum on the premise of his next flick, saying only that “it is science fiction and it has many sociopolitical ideas that interest me. Those ideas are wrapped up inside something that is like a Hollywood action film.” Two financial details that we are afforded are that the new flick is being financed by a group called Media Rights Capital and will have a bigger budget than District 9.

After directing one of the summer’s biggest hits on a shoestring budget, Blomkamp’s prospects in Hollywood are looking good. The financial success coupled »

The Thing Prequel Gets A Start Date

4 January 2010 12:09 AM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

It's been in the works for some time, but The Thing prequel finally has a start-of-shooting date, with production due to begin in Toronto in March and finish in June. Set on the Norweigan Antarctic base glimpsed in John Carpenter's original film, this will see a bunch of Scandinavians having a really bad day thanks to a flesh-eating alien mimic. No cast's been announced so far, but we do know that the director's Matthijs van Heijningen Jr., who's also been attached to Army of the Dead, the Las Vegas-set zombie movie. Presumably, however, this prequel has now overtaken that film (based on a Zack Snyder idea) on his To Do list. The script was written by Eric Heisserer, of the Nightmare on Elm Street remake, and Ronald D. Moore of TV's mighty Battlestar Galactica - so expect this to pull no punches. At the very least, this news has »

Votd: Matt Shapiro’s 2009: The Cinescape Retrospective Movie Montage Video!

3 January 2010 10:51 AM, PST | FusedFilm | See recent FusedFilm news »

Most of you have probably seen this already but we make a point of posting this video every year. Last year’s 2008 Cinescape video was self-titled but featured a wonderful look at the year in movies. Now Matt Shapiro’s annual montage has been met everywhere with lauded online reception. Shapiro had this to say about his fourth video in his series:

“So here we are, at the end of a momentous decade, and the personal significance this video holds with me – I made the first one around the time high school started, and I made this one as its approaching an end – makes me especially proud to present to you, for the fourth (but certainly not final) time, 2009: The Cinescape.”

Shapiro has a list of all the films he used in his video on his Youtube site. I have to say that his musical choice was outstanding this »

PBar’s Top 15 of 2009

2 January 2010 5:17 AM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

It’s that time of year. The lists come out, people check to see if their favorite films are on the list, then complain when they’re left off. Moaning also comes when one film is placed too low or too high, and the writer is told he knows nothing of cinema. As should be the preface when reading any review, this is just an opinion and should be treated as such. Unless you didn’t like Avatar. Then you need to have your cinema-going privileges revoked. Kidding…or not?

But back to 2009, which here ranked as one of the better years in film for the decade. From my own personal standpoint, I consider this list to be a nice mix of mainstream and independent film, but that’s up to you, the reader to decide. You can tell me how wrong and stupid I am after I present the »

Director's Cut: Patrick's top 10 for 2010

1 January 2010 1:34 PM, PST | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

In the days of Coming Attractions 1.0, at the end of every year I would write a list of what, at that time, were the movies that I was most looking forward to seeing in the coming 12 months. These upcoming top 10 lists reflected the excitement and interest level I had at the end of December. As I entered the new year and new trailers, images and news trickled out about the films that landed on my list, some fell down and off the chart while other new ones emerged and replaced the fallen. Keep that in mind as you read what movies I'm the most excited to see in 2010 because the promise of a movie's greatly conceived of marketing campaign can often fall short of the final product. Which ones from the following list will remain on my best of 2010 list and which movies will crash and burn on the bonfire of hype? »

Dread Central's Best Horror Films of the Decade

1 January 2010 2:46 AM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

What a decade. Talk about an insane ten years. In it we've seen sequels top originals, remakes up the ante, and a precious few bits of original content do what all quality cinema does -- become instant classics. Join us now for a look back at the decade that was 2000-2009!

Being that Foy covered the worst of the decade already (and who better to do so?), we collectively voted on the best so this truly is Dread Central's definitive list. Now let's get to it, starting with the title that garnered the fewest votes all the way up to the one that got the most.

10: The Devil's Rejects (2005)

Well before the much abused re-imaginings known as Rob Zombie's Halloween and Halloween II were conceived by the unpredictable writer/director, he was honing his craft on a taut and dark little film called The Devil's Rejects. While Rejects is »
