2009 was a year of delights at the movies. The list below testifies to that. It doesn't rival '07 when two examples of virtual moviemaking perfection were released--namely "No Country for Old Men" and "There Will Be Blood" but '09 may have been filled with as many unexpectedly joyful film going experiences as I can remember in a single calendar year.
From sitting in the first public screening of what should have been a forgetful and frivolous romantic comedy on a frigid night in Park City (see #8) to being flabbergasted by the inventiveness of a would-be sci-fi auteur (whose name I couldn't spell or pronounce at the time, see #7) for 112 riveting minutes. Franchises were reborn. Genres were injected with new life. Stephen Sommers made a watchable film called "G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra." Young filmmakers came of age. And one mad genius with the heart of a pussycat and »

The first decade of the new millennium has come to an end, and that means it is now time for film sites all over the web to begin posting their various retrospectives and lists recalling the decade that was. I generally as a rule dislike such lists because they are always so subjective. Then I said screw it and took it upon myself to do one of my own naming the ten worst horror movies of the past decade. Besides, people love bitching on the Internet about lists like this, and who am I to deny readers yet another excuse to get into pointless flame wars over personal opinions.
Of course, this list is just my personal opinion which is not legally binding ... unless Proposition 304 passes. And we all pray that it will.
I set two rules when putting this list together: Only horror movies that received fairly wide theatrical »

Our friends over at Latino Review have correctly dubbed this following rumor as the “stupid news of the day.” They heard from the super-reliable sources over at Hollyscoop (sarcasm alert!) that young pop music sensation Taylor Swift is being considered for the role of Supergirl.
The Supergirl project that has sparked this rumor is reportedly called Supergirl! The Love Story and that sound – like the crackle of distant thunder – you just heard was the collective sound of thousands of people across the world slapping their foreheads.
Oh Kanye West, why didn’t you save your ridiculous outburst for the moment when we would truly need it?
Here is what Hollyscoop managed to get out of somebody, somewhere, somewhen, who is somehow involved with this Supergirl project:
Hollywood is short of female heroes and the time is right for a new Supergirl. A number of young stars are being mentioned for »

The summer of 2008 was a great season for blockbusters, not only because the films were a financial success, but many of them also earned favor from both fans and critics alike. Unlike this past summer, during which audiences had to suffer through the works of Michael Bay and Stephen Sommers, films like Iron Man were not only fun and crowd-pleasing but also contained a well told stories and enjoyable dialogue that didn't make you cringe. So what if I were to tell you that Iron Man had no script? Prepare to have your mind blown. In Contention recently conducted an interview with Jeff Bridges, discussing the upcoming Crazy Heart, but when the topic turned to last summer's early hit, Bridges let the following bomb drop: .They had no script, man... They had an outline. We would show up for big scenes every day and we wouldn.t know what we »

Ninjas exist! They live in the mountains and are paid 100 pounds in gold by world governments to kill without mercy! Look at one of them the wrong way, or make any attempt to expose their ninja conspiracy and you will be sure to receive an envelope of black sand and forty shuriken through your heart. Fortunately plucky Europol (read: Interpol) librarian Mika (Naomie Harris) and ex-ninja, now ninja assassin Raizo (Rain) are on the case. You may ask, as I did, why Ninjas are so problematic in contemporary society, since it is made clear that the ninjas are tools of world governments and have no personal stakes in the assassination of Korean gangsters and corrupt government officials? Do they really deserve to be hunted down and massacred by para-military units? I mean aren't the governments hiring them the real root of the problem? And why does everyone, including ninjas, speak English in Germany, »

Listen up hi-def humbugs and Blu-ray Scrooges! This is the year you'll not just want, but need, to buy a new hi-def plasma screen and a shiny black Blu-ray player for Christmas (and/or whatever other holiday you choose to celebrate with lavish gifts). Why? Because this technology has reached its performance plateau. And it is finally at a reasonable price most of us can afford. Not only that, it serves as the one prefect gift the entire family can enjoy together. With more Blu-ray titles being released right now than ever before, there simply couldn't be a better time to dive head first into this leading technological platform.
But wait! There's one thing you don't want to overlook after all that exciting new equipment has been unwrapped. Without a stack of Blu-ray discs strategically placed in each family member's stocking with care, your gorgeous new HD flat screen becomes a delectable serving tray, »

(Guest Movie Review by Dedpool) In case you missed it when it was being aired on the internet, and again when Cartoon Network aired it at a midnight showing, “G.I. Joe: Resolute” was an 11 episode animated series based on the cartoons and comics of the 1980’s. It was written by Warren Ellis, directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, and produced by Sam Register. And it was absolutely amazing and it’s the superior of the G.I.Joe releases that hit DVD on November 3. I’ve seen them both and well you’ll just have to keep reading to find out more. Well I’ll start off saying I enjoyed Stephen Sommers’ “G.I.Joe: Rise of Cobra.” I also enjoyed Michael Bay’s “Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen.” Both could’ve have been much better, and “G.I.Joe” definitely had more potential and more done right than “Transformers 2, »

There are few people that are aware of the growing movie market overseas. Thailand is emerging as a serious threat in the marital arts action genre with the help of Tony Jaa (Ong Bak); Russia is proving they can make a slick and entertaining film thanks to studios like Disney (Black Lightning); and, of course, Japan has always been the source for many Hollywood studios’ “inspired” horror remakes (The Ring, The Grudge). One foreign market that tends to be brushed off as only doing kung-fu or martial art films is China.
Today we have a trailer for a new Asian film which has the odd IMDb genre label of romance/sci-fi called Ci Ling (Treasure Hunter). Why are we at Screen Rant sharing this trailer with you? Because Treasure Hunter stars an actor most English-speaking audiences may not be familiar with yet, but will be next year: Jay Chou. Chou »

MoviesOnline sat down recently with Dwayne Johnson, Jessica Biel and Justin Long to talk about their new film, “Planet 51,” a galactic-sized animated alien adventure comedy.
When American astronaut Captain Charles "Chuck" Baker (Johnson) lands on Planet 51, he thinks he's the first person to step foot on it only to discover that this planet is inhabited by little green people who are happily living in a white picket fence world reminiscent of a cheerfully innocent 1950s America, and whose only fear is that it will be overrun by alien invaders...like Chuck! With the help of his robot companion "Rover" and his new friend Lem (Long), Chuck must navigate his way through the dazzling, but bewildering, landscape of Planet 51 in order to escape becoming a permanent part of the Planet 51 Alien Invaders Space Museum.
Dwayne Johnson, Jessica Biel and Justin Long are fabulous people and we really appreciated their time. »

Last week, Sony held a press junket at the Griffith Observatory, here in Los Angeles, to help promote their upcoming animated movie Planet 51. Since the film takes place on another planet, I think the location was perfect. Also, almost every press day is held at a hotel, and it’s great to “shake and bake” the junket format. But while the location was different, that didn’t stop Jessica Biel, Justin Long, and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson from making all the journalists laugh during most of their press conference. While you may be sick of Justin Long and his Mac commercials, the guy is quick on his feet when reacting to questions. I was very impressed.
Anyway, after the jump to can either read the transcript of the press conference or listen to the audio. While I always think listening to the audio is better than reading a trancript, »

Director Stephen Sommers might want to discourage the production of animated lead-ups to his feature films. They keep outdoing the movies they're supposed to set up for audiences.
Before his Van Helsing reached theaters in 2004, Universal released Van Helsing: The London Assigment. Written by Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens, the animated half-hour was clever and action-packed. Van Helsing? It was not clever and action-packed.
Now, the DVD release of G.i. Joe: Resolute, an 11-episode series of animated shorts that originally aired on Adult Swim before the release of Rise of Cobra, brings a cooler and more visually compelling "Yo, Joe!" to screens.

“2012” delivers everything you could possibly want from a blockbuster disaster movie, though you have to wonder how Roland Emmerich is going to top the end of the world.
It’s not so much that the Earth is destroyed, but that it’s done so thoroughly. “2012,” the mother of all disaster movies (and the father, and the extended family) spends half an hour on ominous set-up scenes (scientists warn, strange events occur, prophets rant and of course a family is introduced) and then unleashes two hours of cataclysmic special events hammering the Earth relentlessly.
This is fun. “2012″ delivers what it promises, and since no sentient being will buy a ticket expecting anything else, it will be, for its audiences, one of the most satisfactory films of the year. It even has real actors in it. Like all the best disaster movies, it’s funniest at its most hysterical. You think you’ve seen end-of-the-world movies? »

In Part 3 of Wamg’s look at 2012, we’ll take a look at the posters marketing the film as well as other disaster themed posters. Back in August, I showed you some of the dazzling posters from director Roland Emmerich’s apocalyptic movie. For me, there’s nothing better than when you go into the theater, movie posters towering all around, and you instinctively walk right up to one that catches your eye… especially the visually cool ones. That film is immediately locked into the brain and you begin thinking about what the first teaser for the film will look like on the big screen. Funny enough, this latest one for 2012 is reminiscent of The 10 Commandments, although Heston’s “Moses” has a far better outcome, and with a totally different type of ”God’s Wrath” looming in the distance. No burning bush or stone tablets to save this Tibetian Monk. »

The vampire has been a key figure in folklore, literature, television and cinema. Its popularity, at present, has never been so high. It is easy to see the appeal: immortality and sex. Since death is the fate that awaits us all, a creature that we invent and imbue with an indeterminate lifespan, captivates the collective imagination like no other. Due to sexual liberalism and relaxed censorship of the 1960s, the erotic sensibilities inherent in the mythology were allowed to fruition in cinema. What once was implied, could now be shown in all its sexy glory (see the films of Jean Rollin). Gothic horror and romanticism may be the classic home of the vampire, but in cinema, they have found a new place to spread wider-reaching nightmares.
In recent times, the everlasting monster has been tamed. Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight Saga saw them turn into something akin to vegetarians and teen heart-throbs, »

With toy-based films such as Transformers and G.I. Joe bringing in a box office bonanza, it's pretty obvious we are going to see many more brands exploding on to the screen.
In an article discussing the boom in feature films derived from games and action figures, The Wall Street Journal reveals that Star Trek director and Lost creator Jj Abrams is in talks with toymakers Hasbro to produce a Micronauts movie.
Hasbro - which makes the Transformers and G.I. Joe action figures - has just acquired the rights to the Micronauts from Japanese originators Takara.
The interconnectable toys were first released in 1974 under the name Microman before being cancelled in 1980 and then revived in 2002. They were also adapted into several comic books published by Marvel, Image and Devil's Due Publishing.
As part of the current studio craze for raiding toy stores, Ridley Scott is to direct a movie »
