Just because Madonna isn't dating A-Rod doesn't mean she can't still be a Yankees fan. A source tells me that the Queen of Pop celebrated the Bronx Bombers' World Series win on Saturday (a day after the big NYC parade) with boyfriend Jesus Luz, Jerry Seinfeld and even one of Yankees owner George Steinbrenner's sons. The group did some wining and dining at posh restaurant A Voce overlooking Central Park... "Jerry got there first with his wife, and he wanted a private room," a fellow restaurant-goer says. "They didn't have anything available, so Jerry asked for the most private table in the place." Our eyewitness says a group of fellow diners was asked to move »

November 4, 2009; November 4, 2008. Getty Images. Forget C.C. Sabathia, Mark Texeira, Derek Jeter, and Alex Rodriguez’s post-‘roids revival. Want to know the real reason the Yankees broke through after a nine-year drought and won the World Series Wedensday night? Take a look at this list of the Yankees’ Series wins since 1960 and see if you can spot the underlying trend: 1961, 1962, 1977, 1978, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2009. Yes, that’s right: since the end of the Eisenhower era, the Yankees have only won championships when a Democrat was in the White House. There were two wins under John Kennedy, another two under Jimmy Carter, a whopping four under Bill Clinton, and now—after a dismal eight-years marked by preemptive war, regressive economic policies, and Red Sox victories—a fresh championship clinched a year to the day after Obama's election. Ironic then that George Steinbrenner was convicted of making illegal campaign contributions to Richard Nixon in 1972. One hopes »

If the Yankees win to tonight, they'll bag the American League Pennant, and head to the World Series, where they'll face the Philadelphia Phillies, with game 1 next Wednesday. You can expect a brain-deadening amount of analysis--all of which is probably going to boil down to these two handy graphics.
In short, the Yankees are pretty damn good, at least by the numbers. The Phillies are exceptional, but a lot less gobsmackingly talented.
Visual Baseball collected stats that illustrate the five canonical measures of baseball talent--batting average, batting power, speed, pitching, and defense--and graphed the results for both the Yankees and the Phillies. The results manage to neatly sum up just how insanely talented the high-priced Yankees roster is. But given that the Yankee's payroll is nearly double that of the Phillies, the latter is an incredibly strong team:
It's funny to note that the Phillies are fast and relatively underpaid, »

Happy Thursday everyone, here's my Top 5 for September 10, 2009 from www.LenBermanSports.com 1. Quick Hits Derek Jeter got three hits last night to tie Lou Gehrig for the all time Yankee hit mark. Midnight for Cinderella. 17-year old American Melanie Oudin loses in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open to Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki. Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic reach the men's semi-finals. The NFL season begins tonight. Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh hosts Tennessee. Allen Iverson is signing with the Memphis Grizzlies. 2. Yankee Panky God I miss the good old days. George Steinbrenner calling out players. Hank Steinbrenner saying something dopey. (He has now all but disappeared as brother Hal runs the team.) A-Rod making ridiculous headlines. These days it's just win win win. They're both good and boring. How disappointing. 3. Hit Parade What do Tim Wallach, Carl Crawford, and Ed Kranepool all have in common? Time's up. They are the »

I'm not sure who will rejoice at this news more: Yankees or Mets fans. Long-time Yankees owner George Steinbrenner has been sued by a former colleague for breach of agreement regarding the Yes Network. This is another in a long line of broken and burned bodies left in Steinbrenner's wake.
Accusing Steinbrenner of lying is a bit like accusing the the Pope of being Catholic. Just ask Billy Martin, Dave Winfield, Reggie Jackson, etc., etc., etc. I'd be more surprised if he told the truth. Simply on the basis of who George Steinbrenner is and how he behaves, I'm pretty sure that Robert Gutkowski is justified in his claim.
Mind you, Steinbrenner is pushing 80. He's not quite the powerhouse he used to be. If you want to sue him, now's the time (as opposed to even 10 years ago). Perhaps they should get Larry David (who did the Steinbrenner impression back »

George Steinbrenner has been slapped with a $38 million breach of contract suit by a former exec at the Madison Square Garden Network, Reuters is reporting.
Robert Gutkowski, former president of Msg, says The Boss promised him he'd be a major player in the creation of another channel, the Yes network. Instead, Steinbrenner only used him as an outside consultant and therefore never properly compensated him for his role in creating the channel, the wire service reports.
The lawsuit seeks $18 million in compensatory damages and another $20 million in s »

That old refrain "Take me out to the ballgame" may have to rewrite its lyrics. Forget "Buy me some pea nuts and Cracker Jack." It's now "Buy me some pasta and a sushi snack." The new Yankee Stadium, The House That Ruth ReBuilt, features Lobel Meats, who'd trucked in 10,000 pounds of beef for opening day, and by 10:30, three hours before game time, was already out of strip steak. Yeah, you can still grab a beer and a belch but, for nonpeasants who'd curl their pinkies around a burger, there's also shrimp and vodka.
The stands were so jammed, you »
