One of the high points on last year's Lgbt Roller Coaster Ride of Terror was Wanda Sykes coming out as gay and married. It's not every day our community gets an intelligent, hilarious, high-profile woman of color as a spokesperson — especially one that isn't afraid pull punches.
This Saturday night (Nov. 7), Fox is launching The Wanda Sykes show, which should be the perfect platform for Sykes to push as many buttons as the FCC will allow.
Wanda has been making the daytime talk show rounds over the last few weeks, stopping in to chat with Oprah, Joy Behar on Hln and the women of The View. In every interview, she's spoken openly and affectionately about her wife and their six-month-old twins.
In fact, she and Oprah got philosophical over her sexual orientation, with Oprah saying:
When you admitted you are gay and open — not that there needed to be an »

There’s no word on who will, but there’s now word on who won’t host the Oscars on March 7, 2010.
Hugh Jackman has turned down the job, Variety reports.
Jackman (aka Song & Dance Wolverine) received mostly positive reviews hosting the show last year, as he declared, “The Musical is Back!” and danced with Beyonce.
Variety says it’s understood that he didn’t want to do the show two years in a row.
Jackman’s next film will be The Real Steel.
The 82nd annual Academy Awards will be produced by Bill Mechanic and Adam Shankman.
So, now that we know Jackman is out, who should be in?
Either you want a showman (like Jackman) or comedian (like Jon Stewart).
I would have suggested Ricky Gervais, but he’s busy with the Golden Globes. If the Oscars were on NBC, there probably would have been a strong push to »

Tuesday's Daily Show with Jon Stewart brought a pressing and shocking concern to my eyes, something the American people as a whole have largely ignored: the ridiculous ad for the Shake Weight.
Most exercise infomercials are already crazy and unintentionally hilarious in and of themselves, but this ad deserves the Mark Twain Prize.

Right off the bat, I want to make it clear that you don't have to be half-baked to enjoy Half Baked. But if you thought Pineapple Express was hilarious, and you haven't seen Half Baked, it's high time you rectify this problem. Sure, Pineapple Express had James Franco as a drug dealer slash nice Jewish boy overly concerned with his Bubbe, and it had Danny McBride wigging out in his normal (i.e. awesome) way, and yeah, it was almost the perfect stoner crime caper.
But Half Baked has all that and more! It has Dave Chappelle as both a janitor at a lab that just happens to produce pharmaceutical-grade marijuana and a hip-hop star named Sir Smoke-a-Lot who, when high, complains, cries, and complains that he needs a "backiotomy." It has Guillermo Diaz as Scarface, who wants you to know he's Cuban, B! And it has Jim Breuer in »

Last weekend's Equality March in Washington D.C. got me to thinking about how far we have — and haven't — come in the fight for gay equality. But since AfterElton.com focuses on pop culture, I'm going to look at things through that lens and leave the political analysis for Pam's House Blend, Americablog, Bilerico and the other assorted gay political websites that cover the topic.
One of the very first times American television addressed the subject of gay men (bisexuality was almost never addressed) was way back in 1954 when the L.A. based tabloid talk show Confidential File presented "Homosexuals and the Problems They Present." Hmm, I'm guessing it wasn't terribly flattering unless it was about how boring straight people looked in comparison to us 'mos.
San Francisco's public TV station did the first ever documentary, The Rejected in 1961 and it wasn't until 1967 that a television show first featured a gay storyline. »

"The Daily Show" host Jon Stewart won't be going to Bellingham, Wash., to accept the key to the city.Mayor Dan Pike says representatives of Stewart's talent agency told him that Stewart appreciated the offer but was too busy to accept. Pike made the offer after the mayor of Mount Vernon decided to give Fox News commentator Glenn Beck a key to that city.Pike tells The Bellingham Herald that he's not disappointed by Stewart's decision because the point of the offer was to spark community discussion. He says he still plans to send Stewart a key to the city. »

We marched on D.C. to taunt leprechauns.
When it came to Jon Stewart's coverage of the D.C. March, I admit that the bar had been set incredibly high in my head. Sunday, while watching the National Equality March, a friend had tweeted that The Daily Show had a film crew in the crowd.
I had harassed the boss for two days about getting footage from our most effective straight ally, and was gleeful in anticipation of what Jon Stewart's wit would do for our cause when combined with us showing up in force.
So it was probably inevitable that I was a little disappointed in what I saw on last night's Daily Show. It's not that it wasn't the best coverage we got. Heck, in raw minutes it even beat Fox News' coverage of the President Obama song protest. The problem with Stewart's coverage is that he took our protest, »

CNN seems to be the perfect foil and the gift that keeps on giving for Emmy winning "Daily Show" host Jon Stewart, who pokes a big stick at the 24 hour news network's creative fact finding usage and reliance on Twitter. "The Daily Show" regularly features Stewart taking CNN to task for lack of professional fact checking and thoughtful segment producing. Stewart has previously poked fun at willing taser tester Rick Sanchez, the CNN anchor and devotee of Twitter, and recently CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer for using a comedy skit show "SNL" as the basis for a hypothetical political pulse taker. Now David Letterman knows who his friends are - and there are plenty of them. At Monday night's New York City screening of the HBO documentary Good Hair, its star and co-director Chris Rock had nothing but the best to say about Letterman, blackmail scandal or no. "He's the greatest host in the world," said Rock, 44, at the Cinema Society event sponsored by Target. "I would never make a disparaging comment about David Letterman." Watch: Letterman Publicly Apologizes to WifeTalk-show host Wendy Williams is also behind Letterman 100 percent. "I like him even more," she said. "He did a disgusting thing. »

When Democrats took over Congress in 2006, they did… well, basically nothing. But all that was supposed to change when they got their unstoppable 60-vote "super majority," right? Jon Stewart sure thought so. “They’d be like a bear with chainsaws instead of paws!” he cried. So why did two attempts to get a public option out of the Senate Finance Committee fail? “A bear with chainsaws for paws can’t get a bill out of the finance committee?” the Daily Show host marveled. Declaring Republican arguments “nonsense,” he concluded, “Democrats couldn’t get laid in a house whose sole purpose is to... »

Chicago – The inaugural sketch in the first season of Comedy Central’s “Important Things With Demetri Martin” takes place on a movie set where an actor knows his lines but can’t summon the proper emotions to make them believable. The character calls his unfaithful girlfriend some nasty names in what is supposed to be a fit of fury, but the words coming out of his mouth are said in a nonchalant, nearly cheery tone. If you didn’t know any better, you’d assume he’s arguing with her over who forgot to pick up the dry cleaning rather than who’s been sleeping with whom.
DVD Rating: 2.5/5.0 Oddly enough, the premise of that fictional bit gets to the heart of what prevents this modestly charming series from being more than merely something to watch when nothing else is on. For all his cleverness and experience working crowds, Martin appears remarkably uncomfortable on camera, »

So another year has passed and its time for another round of awards for the people who make the television shows we like to watch.
Television is interesting these days. Never before have we seen such great, creative output. Never before have we been subjected to such drivel. It all gets paraded before us tonight, as we watch the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards (handed out, it should be noted, by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences) on CBS, CTV in Canada.

Interesting that the Emmys chose to introduce the 2009 edition of the Primetime awards by harkening back to the early days of television. Especially as the business of television has never been closer to a complete collapse. Oh, announcer who is trying so hard to sound like a TV host from the '50s. You don't sound at all like you're a three pack-a-day smoker.

Imagine if the same six or seven movies and their actors, writers, directors, etc. kept getting nominated for Oscars every year. There would be slight deviations but for the most part, Academy members would just take their ballot from last year, peruse a couple of For Your Consideration ads, maybe read a critic’s list or two as a second source to make sure they weren’t making any selection deemed interesting, and you’d wonder if they just showed a repeat except they somehow replaced Jon Stewart with Hugh Jackman.
“TV’s Finest Night” is always a repeat and you cherish just about anyone who hasn’t won an Emmy in the past no matter the quality of the show. Yes, “Mad Men” and “30 Rock” are excellent shows but barring a steep decline in quality, I already know who’s going to win next year because the Emmys are »

Comedy rocked once again at the 61st Primetime Emmys, where 30 Rock was named top sitcom series and its lead male star, Alec Baldwin, outstanding actor in a comedy series. Both also took the titles last year. "That was a real nail biter," said the show's creator, producer and star Tina Fey when she accepted the award toward the end of Sunday night's ceremony. She also thanked NBC for keeping the show on the air, even though, as she pointed out, it is more expensive than a talk show. For the second consecutive year, AMC's Mad Men, a period '60s »

Are you sick of the whole Representative Joe Wilson controversy yet? Were you sick of it four or five days ago? Jon Stewart and The Daily Show are too, and last night they showed how the people asking for an apology from Wilson are being hypocritical, and how both sides do this all the time and then ask for an apology when the other side does it.
In other words, politics really suck.
