Akira Targets Thor: Ragnarok Director Taika Waititi

8 hours ago | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

With his highly-anticipated Thor: Ragnarok hitting theaters in November, director Taika Waititi has just landed his next high-profile project, Warner Bros.' Akira. The director has entered negotiations to take the helm of this manga adaptation, which has languished in development hell for several years, and has never been able to get off the ground yet. This long-gestating Akira movie last made headlines back in May, when Jordan Peele turned down the project, following the success of his hit movie Get Out.

Deadline broke the news today, also revealing that the studio has always planned to make two Akira movies, each of which would cover three books apiece in the 6-volume Akira graphic novel by Katsuhiro Otomo. The last we heard about this project was that Akira creator Katsuhiro Otomo has final approval over every aspect of the Akira movie, which may explain why it's taken so long to come to fruition. »

Toronto Film Review: ‘A Worthy Companion’

13 September 2017 1:58 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Why isn’t Evan Rachel Wood a major movie star? I mean a star on the level of Jennifer Lawrence, Kristen Stewart, Angelina Jolie? In “A Worthy Companion,” she’s got a bloom on her — clear eyes, ravishing grin, two-tone hair swept back and parted in the middle, a look that’s pristine in its punk elegance. (She suggests a more open, less halting Kristen Stewart.) Yet she gives a performance of such accomplished anguish that it seems dragged out of the lower depths.

Wood plays Laura, who works for her father’s company doing house-cleaning in an unnamed city that’s cozy, tree-lined, and overcast; it looks like it could be Portland or the Toronto suburbs. When Laura has to, she presents a face to the world that’s calm and sweet and happy, but inside she’s a wreck, a broken howl of rage from her childhood. What makes Wood a star is the way »

The Saturday Night Live Sketches You Need to See Before the Emmys

13 September 2017 10:00 AM, PDT | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

It’s been a banner year for Saturday Night Live.

The legendary sketch comedy show capped off with a whopping 22 Emmy Awards nominations, including nods for standouts cast members Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones.

While the show won two awards at this weekend’s Creative Arts Emmys — Dave Chappelle won for outstanding guest actor in a comedy series, while Melissa McCarthy’s energetic, scene-stealing Sean Spicer impression helped her win the outstanding guest actress in a comedy series — there are still plenty of awards left for SNL to take back to Rockefeller Center with them.

So, before the big night arrives on Sept. »

Blu-ray Review: Kelly Reichardt's Certain Women Joins the Criterion Collection

11 September 2017 7:00 AM, PDT | Screen Anarchy | See recent Screen Anarchy news »

I love the rhythm of Kelly Reichardt's 2016 film, Certain Women. An unhurried triptych of stories about women in small-town Montana, Certain Women has the time (and the sense) to let moments hang, as tiny calibrations of feeling pass across its lead characters' faces. Anchored by rewarding performances by Laura Dern, Michelle Williams and Lily Gladstone (with Kristen Stewart running the anchor leg on the latter's story), the film rewards detailed repeat viewing -- which makes its addition to the Criterion Collection a great choice. Laura Dern plays a lawyer (also named Laura), who struggles with a client (Jared Harris) unwilling to let his grievance against a former employer go. Harris gives the showier performance but Reichardt's camera is much more interested in how Harris'...

Kristen Stewart Explains Why She Didn’t Cast Herself in Her Short Directorial Debut, ‘Come Swim’

31 August 2017 8:13 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Kristen Stewart’s second act isn’t just in the works, it’s here. The long-time actress — at age 27, she’s already been acting professionally for more than half her life — initially dreamed of being a filmmaker, a desire she’s lately been putting into practice through short-form directorial opportunities, including a Chvrches music video and her directorial film debut, the short “Come Swim.” The film bowed earlier this year at Sundance, before going on to screen at Cannes and, most recently, a slot as part of Sundance’s traveling Short Film Tour.

Produced as part of Refinery29’s Shatterbox Anthology — a collection of short films all made by women, and of every stripe, from well-known names like Stewart to rising stars like Courtney Hoffman — the film’s short synopsis bills it as “a diptych of one man’s day; half impressionist and half realist portraits.” Part dreamy (and often unnerving) fable, »

Making the Simple Great: The Power of a Top Director

31 August 2017 8:04 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Tom Jolliffe on the power of a top director…

We’ve all seen great directors deliver complex films, perhaps sprawling with ideas and scope. Perhaps an engrossing retelling of an event in history. A director like Christopher Nolan has spent almost his entire career on weaving complex and intricately stranded high concept films. It takes a good director to do the films he does. No question.

By the same token, there’s a big difference between a great director and a functional director. I think that can often be best illustrated in a film with a simple concept. Take a film for example, which in the context of a directors CV is fairly lithe. A lot of great directors have at least one in their filmography. In the case of Steven Spielberg’s Duel, it was the film that first brought him to attention. The film runs on the ruthlessly »
