MTV Star Chung Voted Vogue's Style Queen 2009

23 December 2009 11:56 PM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

MTV chatshow host Alexa Chung has beaten supermodel Kate Moss and style icon Sarah Jessica Parker to the title of Vogue magazine's best dressed woman of 2009.

The British beauty, a former model, has caused a stir in the U.S. since moving Stateside to host her own talk show on the music channel - and is often invited to high-fashion events and runway shows.

And it seems Chung has taken some tips from her couture connections - fashion bible Vogue has listed her atop its most stylish females countdown.

The 26 year old was closely followed by French actress Audrey Tautou, and then Sex And The City star Parker.

U.K. TV talent show The X Factor has also made its mark on the fashion world, with judges Cheryl Cole and Dannii Minogue in at number four and five respectively.

Harry Potter starlet Emma Watson, a model for Burberry and Chanel, comes in at number six, while blondes Sienna Miller and Diane Kruger also made it into the top 10 along with Indian newcomer Freida Pinto. Formerly undisputed style queen Kate Moss is last on the list at number 10. »

What I see in the mirror: Martine McCutcheon

'I am 33 and my boyfriend, Jack, is eight years younger. I forget about the age difference because the women in my family all seem to be with younger men'

My eyes are almond-shaped and chocolate brown, although people often think they're green – I don't know why. My eyebrows are never tidy – I spend my life with an eyebrow wand. I've noticed little lines where I smile that are there all the time now. I am lucky with my skin, but my teeth are not as white as they used to be, and that can make you feel older. I'm thinking, "Mmm, might get the bleach and start whitening the teeth."

When I was younger, I used to look at movie stars with pencil-thin noses and think about a nose job. I've got a grown-up baby nose; it's not chiselled and structured. Then I saw how beautiful Audrey Tautou was in Amélie and thought, »

An Education

Directed by: Lone Scherfig

Cast: Carey Mulligan, Peter Sarsgaard, Alfred Molina, Olivia Williams, Emma Thompson

Running Time: 1 hr 40 mins

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: November 26, 2009

Plot: Set in the 1960s in suburban London, this is a coming-of-age story about Jenny (Mulligan). This teenager’s life is changed when a playboy (Sarsgaard) nearly twice her age shows some interest. Screenplay written by author Nick Hornby (”About a Boy,” “High Fidelity”).

Who’S It For? It’s a period piece with a tough topic … there’s a big age difference in this relationship. Those looking for a strong (young) female lead, that may have a chance at an Oscar should make sure they see this film.

Expectations: Peter Sarsgaard has been in a ton of films, but the last one I really liked was Jarhead. I knew nothing about director Lone Scherfig, whose other films are Hjemve and Wilbur Wants to Kill Himself. »

King of cool

Jacques Audiard's new prison thriller is the most stylish film to come out of Europe for years, following up on the promise of his previous movies Read My Lips and The Beat that My Heart Skipped and confirming his place among the greats of French cinema. Jason Solomons talks to a director who wants his audience to fly with him

Jacques Audiard wears a hat. It's a trilby that, the 57-year-old director says, keeps him warm in the winter and cool in the summer. He was wearing it in the heat of Cannes last May when I first met him, on a blazing roof terrace; and he's wearing it again today, in London, on an autumnal Monday when I catch him smoking his pipe outside the hotel where we're due to meet.

With horn-rimmed glasses, smart jacket and a cravat, he looks a bit like an English gentleman, a »

Coco Before Chanel – DVD Review

23 November 2009 1:40 PM, PST | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

Long before the trappings of success took hold, Coco Chanel was a not more than a peasant living life abandoned in an orphanage. Immediately this shocking situation for one of history’s most prolific designers sets us up for a rags-to-riches tale like no other, and it’s virtually certain that without the hard and lonely upbringing in which she was forced to more or less fend for herself, Coco would not have had the strength or grit to found one of the great fashion houses.

A little girl who is sent with her sister to an orphanage in the heart of France, who waits in vain every Sunday for her father to come for her…

A cabaret performer with a weak voice who sings to an audience of drunken soldiers…

A humble seamstress, who stitches hems at the back of a provincial tailor’s shop…

Terminator – The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Terminator Salvation

DVD & Blu-ray, Warner, Sony

If nothing else, watching McG's Terminator Salvation at least puts Christian Bale's infamous on-set meltdown into perspective; if you had to pretend to be angry for so long in front of the camera then you'd probably end up angry in real life. Bale's angry John Connor is a one-note performance, the problem being it's the wrong note. That's not the only drawback: McG has a similar one-dimensional take on the material. He seems to think the Terminator films are about robots and explosions and nothing else. And Bale has to share the narrative with Sam Worthington's turn as an unwilling cyborg, the result being the film plays as if it has two competing co-stars and no real direction. Far more Terminator-ish is the now-cancelled TV series The Sarah Connor Chronicles, led by Lena Headey. Science-fiction television shows, »

Review: Coco Before Chanel

6 November 2009 4:15 AM, PST | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

Coco Before Chanel is a well-made but very slow biopic about the early days of influential French fashion designer Coco Chanel. Though it has an excellent central performance by Audrey Tautou, it’s a flawed way to tell her story if it has any hope of appealing to a broad audience. Aspects of Coco Chanel’s life have been filmed before, notably Chanel Solitaire in 1981 with Marie France-Pisier as Coco and the 2008 TV movie Coco Chanel starring Shirley Maclaine as an older Coco (who lived to be 83). This time director/writer Ann Fontaine shows us how Coco becomes Chanel, illustrating key events in the early life of an underprivileged young woman, with no resources other than her own ambition, who became such an important figure in forging contemporary tastes in style. The problem with the film (besides the fact that it’s French) is that, instead of the expected »

Oscar voters get three more DVDs: 'Coco Before Chanel,' 'Damned United,' 'Whatever Works'

30 October 2009 8:45 AM, PDT | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

On Thursday, Oscar voters received the second, third and fourth DVD screeners sent to the full academy — all three from Sony Pictures Classics, which thus becomes the first major studio out of the gate: "Coco Before Chanel," "The Damned United" and "Whatever Works." Other Spc screeners ("An Education," "The Last Station," "Broken Embraces," "White Ribbon") will be sent later in derby season, a studio rep promises. "A Prophet" is eligible only in the race for best foreign-language film, which requires theatrical screenings, so DVDs of that will not be shipped. The only previous DVD sent to all academy members was "Anvil! The Story of Anvil." Some bloggers reported that "The Messenger" was also sent, but that's not true. At least not yet. It was sent to journalists, but a copy won't be shipped to academy members for another week or so. Economic hard times may severely limit the number of »

Movie Review - 'Coco Avant Chanel'

Coco Avant Chanel

Starring Audrey Tautou, Alessandro Nivola, and Benoît Poelvoorde

Directed by Anne Fontaine

Rated PG-13

In her performance as Coco Chanel, you can see the wheels turning with Audrey Tautou, the gamine French actress who made such an indelible mark on audiences eight years ago in Amélie. That's not to say you can see her acting. For a recent example, watch Hilary Swank in another bio-pic about an important woman from the first half of the 20th century.

With Tautou, as it perhaps was with Chanel, you can see her navigating the chess pieces, from the clothes to the actors. The portrayal is vastly different from Amélie, a determination for herself and for those around her.

However, this is called Coco Avant Chanel, so the arc of the story leads up to Chanel's great success, so the determination Coco sees is probably far different here than it would »

Review: Coco Before Chanel

15 October 2009 8:00 PM, PDT | Slackerwood | See recent Slackerwood news »

Coco Chanel is a name synonymous with a classic style, of simple lines and comfortable fit but not always for everyone. Such is the film Coco Before Chanel, a biopic by Anne Fontaine based on the book Chanel and Her World: Friends, Fashions, and Fame by Coco's official biographer Edmonde Charles-Roux. Fontaine's film is less about the events of Chanel's life and more a window into the provincial beginning and formative years of a woman who defied standards and became an internationally known icon.

Young Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel and her sister were abandoned in an orphanage after the death of their mother. As young women, the Chanel sisters become chanteuses in provincial France. While working as a part-time seamstress, Coco (Audrey Tautou) meets and becomes the courtesan of millionaire playboy Balsan, devilishly played by Benoît Poelvoorde. She moves into his country house, where she hides from his guests at the request of the baron. »

I'm a fool for this Chanel No. 5 commercial

12 October 2009 9:02 AM, PDT | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

You can really tell that the holiday season is coming by the commercials you see on TV. I'm not just talking about the Norelco sled in the snow or the K-Mart layaway pitches. I'm talking about the high end, classy jewelry and perfume commercials that are there to give guys ideas about what to give their spouses.

One of the most beautiful perfume ads I've seen in a long time has been getting a lot of exposure lately. It's for Chanel N°5 with the French actress Audrey Tautou. You probably have seen it, but might remember it more if I tell you about the music. It's a very soulful, bluesy rendition of "I'm A Fool To Want You."

How to Dress Like Coco (Before Chanel)

5 October 2009 3:45 PM, PDT | Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news »

“It’s not a fashion film!” exclaimed Audrey Tautou before the New York premiere of her latest film, Coco Before Chanel, earlier this month. Coco Before Chanel is a film about the woman rather than the label. The movie’s extraordinary wardrobe simply enhances its actual characters, rendering Coco and her entourage in a tangible, three-dimensional way. But that doesn't mean I didn't covet her outfits. Aside from a few vintage items and an actual Chanel suit, everything Tautou wears on camera is the product of the imagination of Catherine Leterrier, the film’s wardrobe director, who sketched and then commissioned each individual ensemble, down to the shoes. Countless headpieces (including oversized hats for more than 700 female extras) were created by famed milliner Stephen Jones.  Leterrier revealed to Vf Daily that the rigorous, four-month fitting process was meticulously photographed in order to document the evolution of the character.  If something »

Coco Before Chanel Review

2 October 2009 6:15 PM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

The struggle from small beginnings to vibrant and wonderful successes always end up being the most appealing stories to become the newest biopics. Coco Avant Chanel, or its working USA title Coco Before Chanel, is no exception to the rule. Using a different turn on the famous fashion designer’s life, the cast and crew of this particular project tells her story in a beautiful yet empowering way.

Although no biographical picture is a hundred percent true to what happened in a person’s life, they still follow the main timeline as closely as possible. The story brings you on the steady ride through Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel’s (Audrey Tautou) life from when she was a child to her time participating in the long love affair with French playboy Étienne Balsan (Benoît Poelvoorde). A love triangle begins to emerge between Balsan and his good friend Arthur “Boy” Capel (Alessandro Nivola »

Furball fashions from 'Where the Wild Things Are'

29 September 2009 6:00 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

We love a little film-inspired fashion, anything from Sex and The City's floral prints to Audrey Tautou’s effortless-looking style in Coco Before Chanel. But now Opening Ceremony is launching looks inspired by Where the Wild Things Are and I don't think beastly chic is gonna take off. The cuddly creations, made in collaboration with director Spike Jonze, include this crazy faux fur dress priced at $460, and these $610 jumpsuits with ears and tails. Still, the bird-inspired coat is much more wearable than Malvin’s chicken-and-egg dress on Project Runway. Think these looks are fashion-forward or just a furry faux pas? »

The Box-Office Top Five

#1 "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs" ($24.6 million)

#2 "Surrogates" ($15 million)

#3 "Fame" ($10 million)

#4 "The Informant!" ($6.9 million)

#5 "Tyler Perry's I Can Do Bad All By Myself" ($4.8 million)

Who needs a world where human beings can exist vicariously through robots when there's a sky filled with meatballs to enjoy? Moviegoers decisively chose the delicious rain shower, as "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs" dominated the box office for the second weekend in a row with a $24.6 million intake, only $6 million less than what it made during its debut weekend.

While the folks at Sony Pictures Animation have plenty of reasons to celebrate, the outcome is significantly more "cloudy" for "Surrogates," Disney's Bruce Willis-starring science-fiction flick, which earned only $15 million. Based on the Top Shelf »
