DVD releases for Tuesday December 29, 2009

I'm kind of choked because Pandorum was supposed to street today, but has been pushed back to January. Ah well, at least we've got a decent Pa flick in Carriers (review) streeting today. A few of us have seen the film and my opinion seems to be the highest. Not a perfect film by any means, but it was nice to watch a farily smart post-apocalyptic road movie that didn't rely on zombies for a change.

Also out this week is Shane Acker's post-apocalyptic animated film, 9 (review). High on action, but a little light in the story details, I'd say it's defintiely worth a spin for its original vision and style.

Another film that streets today and is not quite as mediocre as some would have you believe is The Perfect Getaway, written and directed by David Twohy. The film relies on a pretty heavy conceit to be sure, »

A Perfect Getaway Unrated Director’s Cut Blu-ray Review

28 December 2009 5:33 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

The problem with the thriller is that formalists like Brian De Palma and Bryan Singer have spoiled them for normal people and critics. We expect our genre entries to confound us, or at the very east to be deconstructions of the genre. Forget dramatic irony, we want expert sequences, and tension to abound. And so David Twohy deserves some credit for what he attempts in A Perfect Getaway. He is aware of genre constructs and addresses them, but he does so in such a way that when he removes the tablecloth and the plates are still standing, no one’s so much impressed as ready for the third act. My review of A Perfect Getaway after the jump, jump (please continue).

Top 25 Movies of 2009 Introduction, Honorable Mentions and Movies #21 - 25

What's your overall opinion of the movies of 2009? I ask because moving into December I would have called it a downer year, and if you base your opinion of a year's worth of movies on the blockbusters of the year you may be a bit mixed. While films such as Star Trek, District 9 and Avatar found fans all around the world, films such as Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Terminator Salvation, G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra, Angels and Demons and Watchmen were met with mixed-to-highly-negative reviews from critics and filmgoers alike. A lot of money was made, but I think we all know money doesn't always translate to quality.

There were some out of the blue surprises such as The Hangover and Paranormal Activity and Pixar again impressed us all with Up. Personally, it's the smaller to mid-level films »

Blu-ray review: A Perfect Getaway

Blu-ray Rating: 4/10

If you want to read a review that focuses on the film A Perfect Getaway, check out James’ review over Here.

David Twohy using the beautiful tropical setting of a Hawaiian island is an interesting choice for the film’s story about killer(s) on the loose. Death lurking against the backdrop of such a gorgeous place makes for an unsettling contrast in tone and visuals- in short, it’s effective.

Third "Riddick" Film Begins Scouting

6 December 2009 10:17 AM, PST | www.ohmygore.com/ | See recent OhMyGore news »

Location scouting on a new film in the Riddick franchise has begun in New Zealand says Vin Diesel's Facebook page. The post also indicates David Twohy has finished the script for the third film featuring the character. Diesel first played the gruff, sliver-eyed anti-hero Riddick in the well-received cult hit "Pitch Black" in 2000. Four years later he reprised the role in 2004's generally panned big-budget flop "The Chronicles Of Riddick". Diesel has also voiced the character in the animated short "Dark Fury" and the video games 'Escape from Butcher Bay' and 'Assault on Dark Athena'. Twohy has indicated the film will be an R-rated feature and more modestly budgeted along 'Pitch' lines which allows him and Vin more creative control. »

Vin Diesel Updates Riddick 3 and Another Fast & Furious

4 December 2009 7:15 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Last we heard anything about Riddick 3, Vin Diesel used his Facebook page to tell fans that a script from Chronicles of Riddick writer-director David Twohy was arriving in September. Recently, Diesel let his fans know that Twohy had finished the script, though that wasn't the only Diesel franchise that was getting another installment.

The Fast and Furious script is being written.... I appreciate Universal taking the time to make it right.

The Riddick script is completed ... great job Dt.

As for which movie will be made first, Diesel said that he "invited the studio" to visit the Facebook page and read fans comments in order to help decide "which film will be released in 2010." Looks like Riddick may have won the decision considering one of Diesel's latest posts:

The Riddick team is in New Zealand location scouting already ... that's exciting.

Riddick and Fast & Furious aren't the only Diesel franchises currently in production. »

“The Chronicles of Riddick” Sequel Begins Scouting in New Zealand

3 December 2009 4:10 PM, PST | Filmofilia | See recent Filmofilia news »

According to Vin Diesel’s Facebook page, the third Chronicles of Riddick film is about to get underway.

The “Chronicles of Riddick 3” is currently in pre-production and has already begun scouting locations in New Zealand.

Diesel’s Fb status update:

The Riddick team is in New Zealand location scouting already… that’s exciting.

Diesel first played the gruff, sliver-eyed anti-hero Riddick in the well-received cult hit “Pitch Black” in 2000. Four years later he reprised the role in 2004’s generally panned big-budget flop “The Chronicles of Riddick“.

Diesel has also voiced the character in the animated short “Dark Fury” and the video games “Escape from Butcher Bay” and “Assault on Dark Athena“.

In August, director David Twohy (Pitch Black, The Chronicles of Riddick, A Perfect Getaway) discussed that he’d sketched out two possible ideas for continuing the films and was working to get the third film in front of the »

Another Riddick movie on the way?

3 December 2009 3:31 AM, PST | TotalFilm | See recent TotalFilm news »

Vin Diesel may be returning to the role that made him a star, if rumours that another Riddick movie is being prepped prove true. According to the gravel-voiced star's Facebook page: "the Riddick team is in New Zealand location scouting already... that's exciting". Perhaps Universal is looking to fill the franchise gap currently left by the faltering Bourne 4, or maybe Diesel and director David Twohy have got a killer concept. Pitch Black was a breakout hit for director and star, but sequel The Chronicles of...

Finally! Riddick Film Begins Scouting Locations

3 December 2009 2:22 AM, PST | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

Next to Todd McFarlane’s never-ending Spawn project, the third part in The Chronicles of Riddick sequel has to be one of the most anticipated non-moving projects ever. Having heard only tid-bits on the project for the past two years, Riddick 3 is one of those films that you almost forget was ever in the pipeline to begin with. However it looks like that could all be about to change as Vin Diesel confirms that they are now scouting locations for the shoot!

Making the announcement on this Facebook page, the 42-year-old actor posted just one sentence, announcing what Riddick fans have been waiting to hear since 2004’s The Chronicles of Riddick:

The Riddick team is in New Zealand location scouting already… that’s exciting.

Fortunately, by the time filming begins I’ll be just a short $200 plane trip away from Nz in Melbourne, so I’ll definitely be waiting »

Vin Diesel Provides Update on Third Riddick Movie

3 December 2009 1:17 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Not too long ago Vin Diesel used his Facebook page to inform fans of David Twohy’s Riddick films that the script for the proposed third movie had been completed. Diesel has now posted on his Facebook page:

“The Riddick team is in New Zealand location scouting already… that’s exciting.”

As a fan of both Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick I welcome the update, but at the same time I am only taking it with a grain of salt. The reason for this slight skepticism is that there have been so many issues regarding any future Riddick sequels/prequels that the apparent completed script and now location scouting seem a bit out of the blue. Hopefully the film has secured its budget and pre-production is in fact underway. »

Riddick status update

If you're anything like me, then you definitely find lots to enjoy in the Vin Diesel/David Twohy Riddick films. They're pulpy and old-fashioned and they have a certain charm to them. I'm especially fond of the video game "Escape from Butcher Bay" they spawned. So if you're a fan, and you've been waiting for any little bit of news on another sequel... well, here's a little bit of news! Is Riddick 3 Moving Forward?

2 December 2009 11:57 PM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

It's only a nugget, but it feels pretty solid. Vin Diesel, gravelly voiced cheerleader for multiple ailing movie franchises, has announced on his Facebook page that at least some sort of pre-production is underway on a third Chronicle of Riddick."The Riddick team is in New Zealand location scouting already... that's exciting." is the full status update. But it's significant in that it's the first we've heard of something solid actually happening on the project. The last we knew, back at the beginning of August, came from Pitch Black and Chronicles director David Twohy. He said some ideas were being thrown around, and that the expense and studio concessions of Chronicles were a mistake, leading part three back to much smaller-scale territory. But he also suggested that a smaller budget might be a problem for Diesel, who apparently doesn't get out of bed for less than his usual fee. Vin Diesel Hints that Chronicles of Riddick Sequel is Gearing Up

2 December 2009 9:31 PM, PST | SciFiCool.com | See recent SciFiCool.com news »

Apparently when Vin Diesel talks, he likes to say “Haha”. I mean, I’ve never actually seen someone type “Haha” as often as Vin Diesel does, but I suppose the man does it in real life, so it naturally translate to his typing. Or at least, that’s what I surmised from these entries at his Facebook account, where Vin Diesel has not only been hinting at a “Chronicles of Riddick” sequel on the near horizon, but seems to actually be saying it’s going to happen, and soon. As recently as November 6, Diesel wrote this: The Riddick script is completed… great job Dt. Dt is, of course, David Twohy, the guy who created the franchise, and has written/directed both “Pitch Black” and the first “Chronicles of Riddick”, and along with Diesel, is the driving force behind the franchise getting back to the big screen after the lackluster reception »

Vin Diesel Continues to Pretend Like a 3rd Chronicles Of Riddick Movie Is Happening

2 December 2009 5:02 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

On his Facebook page [via ComingSoon], Vin Diesel announced that “The Riddick team is in New Zealand location scouting already… that’s exciting.”  Wow!  A new Chronicles of Riddick movie! That is exciting!  So who’s financing this adventure?  I know you’re going back down to your Pitch Black budget but I’m sure in this economy, someone out there is willing to give you guys money to make a movie with only a strong cult following and no broader appeal.  I would assume that David Twohy would return to direct, but that would be weird because in August he told Steve that his next project is a film called Crying Havoc.

Here’s what I think is the truth: Vin Diesel is lying.  He is lying his ass off to continue interest not in a 3rd Riddick movie, but in Vin Diesel and letting the fans know that he’s »

Chronicles of Riddick Sequel Begins Location Scouting

2 December 2009 4:17 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

For those of you looking for the return of Vin Diesel as arguably his best on-screen character, Riddick, it looks like it’s one step closer to reality.

On his Facebook page yesterday, Diesel put up an update which included a line revealing that the team behind the next Riddick movie were scouting out locations already – a great thing to hear for those of us anticipating the sequel to 2004’s Chronicles of Riddick.

“The Riddick team is in New Zealand location scouting already… that’s exciting”

The last we heard on the Riddick 3 front was from writer David Twohy, the man who wrote A Perfect Getaway in addition to writing and directing the Riddick films. That was back in August and at the time, he was working out two ideas for the sequel, one of which that would be Rated R. There was studio interest in another PG-13 version, but »

Vin Diesel Says Next Riddick Movie is Already Location Scouting

2 December 2009 3:08 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Every so often we always hear about another Riddick movie from either David Twohy or Vin Diesel. Last time we heard from either was in August, when Twohy explained that he had been developing two ideas, one rated PG-13, the other rated R, but the studio was having a hard time picking either. Now, on Vin Diesel's official Facebook page (via AICN), he reveals that "the Riddick team is in New Zealand location scouting already... that's exciting." A simple update, but it looks like that's confirmation that Twohy did finally get a greenlight from Universal to start pre-production. Hopefully we get an official update on their plans soon. Some are saying that because Universal is having some problems getting the next installment of the Bourne franchise back on track, that they're focusing on other franchises like this one instead. Typically, a project only starts scouting locations if they're actually »

Vin Diesel Drops Huge Riddick Bomb, Scouting Underway?

2 December 2009 11:20 AM, PST | bloody-disgusting.com | See recent Bloody-Disgusting.com news »

It's too bad my memory is as bad as a feeble-minded cat because recently I had heard that Vin Diesel would be returning to his roots in the near future. I don't recall where I heard it, but it doesn't really matter because on the actor's official Facebook page he dropped a bomb. "The Riddick team is in New Zealand location scouting already... that's exciting." Back in August, Pitch Black director David Twohy told Bloody Disgusting in an exclusive interview that he was working hard on a new R-rated Riddick film -- maybe even two. While I'm not fan of Black, or its sequel The Chronicles of Riddick, I still find the mythology fascinating and am very much looking forward to a new entry in the franchise. Hopefully it'll bring back some of those horror elements that made it popular in the first place? »

Location Scouting Has Begun for Riddick Sequel

2 December 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

Vin Diesel has announced on his Facebook page that location scouting has already begun in New Zealand for a new installment in the Chronicles of Riddick franchise, for which director David Twohy has finished the script. In August, Shock talked exclusively to Twohy about the project. "I've sketched out two ideas for the next installment," he said. "Vin and I have decided on one approach of those two, and there's some interest at the studio level but it would be as a PG-13 film, and we don't want to do that anymore. That's one of the concessions we thought we made with 'Riddick' that we shouldn't have made. We also spent too much money and we were too ambitions, so yes, if we do go back to a third one, it will be focused again, hopefully again the same way that »

David Twohy's Bloody, R-Rated 'Riddick' Sequel in Pre-Production

1 December 2009 9:55 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

On his Facebook page, actor Vin Diesel has revealed that a new installment in the 'Chronicles of Riddick' franchise is currently in pre-production and has already begun scouting locations in New Zealand.

Director David Twohy discussed back in August that he'd sketched out two possible ideas for continuing the films and was working to get the third film in front of the cameras in 2010.

"At the studio level, it would have to be a PG-13 movie again and we don't want to do that again," he explained to Bloody Disgusting. "We want an R, so we are looking at the possibility of setting it up as an independent movie and selling it territory by territory and thereby keeping an ownership stake in the movie. But we're trying to see what that would yield in this unsafe market..."
