Yes Man (Peyton Reed, 2008)

Remember Jim Carrey in Liar, Liar, where he forces himself to tell the truth for 24 hours? Well, here Jim Carrey forces himself to answer yes to any request, for a year. Which is upping the ante somewhat, but doesn't make it a better film. This is a return to the manic, gurning, not-very-funny Carrey, as if The Truman Show, Eternal Sunshine etc hadn't happened. Just say no.
The Golden Compass (Chris Weitz, 2007)
11.40am, 8pm, Sky Movies Family

Pottermania, Tolkein-mania, Twilight-mania…it’s fair to say that the noughties have been a strong one for different kinds of mania. Moreover, it’s also been the time for some pretty awesome movies. 2000 marked a particularly promising start: American Beauty, the directorial debut from Sam Mendes was a unique critique on the American dream that attracted widespread acclaim, being nominated for 8 Academy Awards and winning 5; including Best Picture. His next project, Road to Perdition proved this success to be no fluke. Apparently this was a good time for new directors, as further evidenced by Sofia Coppola’s The Virgin Suicides, and Spike Jonze’s Being John Malkovich. Not that the decade was limited to low-budget concept flicks. Box office-smashing comic book adaptations became the name of the game; ranging from the great (Spider-Man, X-Men and Hellboy), to the not so much (Daredevil and Fantastic Four). It became (almost) socially acceptable »

Ever since completing the Matrix trilogy in 2003, Andy Wachowski and Larry Wachowski have directed only one movie (last year's Speed Racer), leaving many to wonder when they'd next get behind the camera. Ariana Huffington, of all people, may have given us an answer.
The co-founder and editor-in-chief of The Huffington Post posted some photos on her Twitter account yesterday (along with some tweets) suggesting that she's involved in a new feature movie from the Wachowskis.
The tweets indicate that the movie will be a look at the current war in Iraq from the vantage point of a futuristic society. Check the twitpic photos to see more of Huffington's wild hairdo.

We sat down recently with director James McTeigue to talk about his new film, “Ninja Assassin,” based on a screenplay by Matthew Sand and J. Michael Straczynski, and starring Korean pop star Rain, Naomie Harris, Ben Miles, Rick Yune and legendary martial arts performer Sho Kosugi.
As a boy in Sydney, McTeigue was exposed to a variety of world cinema and television and was heavily influenced by ninja television shows like "Shintaro" and "Phantom Agents," and by films such as "Shinobi No Mono." He graduated from Sydney University, where he studied art and film.
McTeigue made his directorial debut helming the iconoclastic screen adaptation of the graphic novel "V for Vendetta." He came to the project through his relationship with the Wachowski brothers, for whom he served as the assistant director on all three "Matrix" films. His other previous film credits as an assistant director include "Speed Racer" and "Dark City. »

The players: Director: James McTeigue, Writer: J. Michael Straczynski, Cast: Rain, Naomie Harris, Ben Miles, Rick Yune
Facts of interest: Produced by Andy Wachowski and Larry Wachowski.
The plot: Rain plays a killer ninja who escapes from his clan and becomes a target himself. He also protects a Europol agent who knows too much about the ninjas.
Our thoughts: James McTeigue’s “Ninja Assassin” is one of the most ridiculous action flicks I’ve seen in a long time. Parts of it are indeed moderately entertaining, but all in all, it’s nothing but a brainless, unnecessary big-screen mess filled with terrible dialogue, monotonous action scenes and a story as thin as your admission ticket. »

When I was offered to participate in a roundtable with the (overseas) famous pop star Rain I didn’t really know anything about him. Didn’t know he was a musician or the fact that he has some intense fans. To me, he was just the minor character in Speed Racer and the upcoming star of Ninja Assassin. That changed a little bit when Rain arrived at the screening I attended. It became obvious that he was quite popular due to the plenty of rabid fans that were there, which all came off as quite creepy. With all that said, here’s what Rain had to say about Ninja Assassin, which is now in theaters.
I believe you were at comic-con last year, was that fun?
Rain: Yes, it was fun. It was [a] great experience. I love comic-con.
Since you worked with James on Speed Racer was that were »

Six new video clips have emerged for Ninja Assassin, the latest action spectacle from producer Joel Silver and his V for Vendetta and Speed Racer partners, Andy and Larry Wachowski (the creators of The Matrix trilogy). The trio of producers brought V for Vendetta's director, James McTeigue, in to helm the feature, which was shot in Berlin, Germany.
Starring Korean pop star Rain in his first featured role, Ninja Assassin tells the story of Raizo, a boy trained to kill in an orphanage that serves as an assassin factory for the Ozunu Clan, a secret society thought only to exist in myth and legend. While no one has been attached to direct a new "Superman" film, speculations about what the film is going to be like keep swirling. Most recently, James McTeigue, who has been long rumored to direct the stalled "Superman" film project, has shared his idea on making it as a complete reboot should he join the project.
McTeigue, who previously helmed "Ninja Assassin" and "V for Vendetta", told MTV on August 20, "I think if I was ever going to go near Superman, I would do a complete reboot-take it in a direction that you would absolutely not expect, actually." He then added, "So, that would be my thinking on it, if I was ever going to go near Superman."
The filmmaker further detailed his idea for upcoming "Superman" project, saying "I think it's good that they just had a court case where, basically, if you make another Superman movie, you can't »

Last week, IESB reported that Warner Bros. had closed the door on Bryan Singer's involvement with Superman and were looking to reboot the franchise, possibly with James McTeigue as director and Andy and Larry Wachowski producing.
Warner was supposedly hoping for a more action-oriented director, which McTeigue may prove to be with his upcoming Ninja Assassin. However, when SlashFilm asked McTeigue about the possibility of directing Superman, his answer was decidely vague:
You know ... I ... I would say. .. I'll keep you guessing, actually. It's good not to dispel every rumor, right? McTeigue's answer was surprising considering he was the one to announce Warner's interest in having the Wachowskis take over the Superman franchise in February. At the time, McTeigue thought the Wachowskis may be too busy should their pet project Plastic Man get off the ground, though McTeigue says the movie, at this point, is dead:
Obviously, Larry and Andy, »

A brand-new trailer for James McTeigue's upcoming action flick "Ninja Assassin" has popped up online, and you can admire it after the jump. It looks pretty darn cool.

Andy Wachowski and Larry Wachowski produce "Ninja Assassin," which hits theaters Nov. 25, 2009. The cast includes Rain, Naomie Harris, Ben Miles and Rick Yune.
James McTeigue previously directed "V for Vendetta," which I really enjoyed. Judging by this trailer, we'll get plenty of stunning action to enjoy in the flick. Bring it on! »
