Yes Man (Peyton Reed, 2008)

Remember Jim Carrey in Liar, Liar, where he forces himself to tell the truth for 24 hours? Well, here Jim Carrey forces himself to answer yes to any request, for a year. Which is upping the ante somewhat, but doesn't make it a better film. This is a return to the manic, gurning, not-very-funny Carrey, as if The Truman Show, Eternal Sunshine etc hadn't happened. Just say no.
The Golden Compass (Chris Weitz, 2007)
11.40am, 8pm, Sky Movies Family

Two days ago liberal website co-founder Arianna Huffington began Tweeting about a “movie on Iraq from the perspective of the future” she shot with the Wachowskis (of Matrix fame). According to the updates throughout the day, she flew to Chicago and posed in front of a green screen for a day, even posting pictures of herself in a “futuristic” costume.
Huffington’s Twitter posts started a swarm of speculation because to our knowledge the Wachowskis haven’t announced their next film.
Devin at Chud claims it’s only test footage (that explains the single day of filming) and Erik at Cinematical suggests it might be David Mitchell’s “Cloud Atlas,” which the Wachowski’s optioned last year. Though I’m not sure how Mitchell’s six random narratives fit with the futuristic take on the Iraq war, but maybe we’ll know more soon. I’m surprised they were able »

Arianna Huffington's Twitter feed got a lot of eyes a-poppin' yesterday with her mysterious Tweets about being a part of the next movie from the Wachowski siblings, as well as some very cool Twitpics of her in costume, on set, and with directors Andy and Lana Wachowski. Film sites are buzzing about the project, but unfortunately not all of them have stopped calling the duo the Wachowski Brothers, which aggravates me to no end because Lana is a woman.
As almost every article is quick to point out, Lana was "originally" Larry; a few years after the two gained notice for their futuristic blockbuster The Matrix, rumors were flying about why the two were so reclusive. Then Lana came out as a woman, even holding a press conference for the official announcement, which is truly awesome. And while it's not a shocker than fanboys can't resist taking potshots at »

Ever since completing the Matrix trilogy in 2003, Andy Wachowski and Larry Wachowski have directed only one movie (last year's Speed Racer), leaving many to wonder when they'd next get behind the camera. Ariana Huffington, of all people, may have given us an answer.
The co-founder and editor-in-chief of The Huffington Post posted some photos on her Twitter account yesterday (along with some tweets) suggesting that she's involved in a new feature movie from the Wachowskis.
The tweets indicate that the movie will be a look at the current war in Iraq from the vantage point of a futuristic society. Check the twitpic photos to see more of Huffington's wild hairdo.

"On plane to Chicago to take part in the Wachowskis' movie on Iraq from the perspective of the future." That's where political pundit Arianna Huffington, founder of The Huffington Post, began her day on Twitter. From there, she proceeded to tweet pictures from her screen tests for the new film from The Wachowski Brothers, including a shot with her and former-brother-now-sister Lana Wachowski. We've gleaned from her Tweets (seen below) that the film is a futuristic take on the war in Iraq, set some 90-years in the future. In the search for answers, the blogosphere has uncovered more information that could be relevant. Cinematical Editor Erik Davis mentioned on Twitter that the Wachowski's recently optioned the David Mitchell novel Cloud Atlas, which presents six stories, two of which are set in a dystopian future. The book follows six people who are the reincarnations of the same soul through a great span of time. Per »

Director James McTeigue has been working on films since the late 1980s, back in his native Australia. He was second assistant director on Dark City and first assistant director on Star Wars: Attack of the Clones. He started working with Andy and Larry Wachowski as an assistant director on The Matrix, and they've been collaborating on projects together ever since. The Wachowskis wrote the first feature film helmed by McTeigue, V for Vendetta, and he provided second-unit direction on their most recent film, Speed Racer.
Ninja Assassin, which opened this week, is the latest movie McTeigue has directed, with the Wachowskis on board as producers. You can read William Goss's review for more details about the action/fantasy film. Cinematical sat down with the director in late September during Fantastic Fest, just after the movie played the festival. He was very pleased with the fest screening and happy to talk about the film. »

Happy Thanksgiving to our friends in the U.S.! There are three major movies in wide release for this long weekend, including The Wachowski Brothers' Ninja Assassin, Wes Anderson's stop motion flick Fantastic Mr. Fox, and the Disney comedy Old Dogs starring John Travolta and Robin Williams. It's unclear if any of them will actually be able to dethrone New Moon at the box office, at least there is a good variety of options for a night out at any rate. As we mentioned yesterday [1], The Road is getting a significantly smaller release than expected, at least initially, and other films in limited release include Richard Linklater's Me and Orson Welles and Disney's The Princess and the Frog. What will you be watching this weekend? Old Dogs [2] Ninja Assassin [3] Fantastic Mr. Fox [4] (wide) The Road [5] (limited) Me and Orson Welles [6] (limited) The Princess and the Frog [7] (limited »

Ninja Assassin had a lot of potential to become the dream film of many fanboys. And until those fanboys see it, it may remain so. However, I found my dream slightly shattered after witnessing the film for myself. The first area in which this film fails, and the element that works entirely to its detriment, is in story. For a movie like this to work without exception we either need to believe in the ninja as a real being traveling the world unnoticed and assassinating people, or we need to not care that they aren’t real…read more [Joblo]
Ninja Assassin is a convincing, reasonably co-ordinated action movie. Nothing special, but lovers of the genre will enjoy the workouts, especially if they bring night-vision glasses. On the plus side, Harris is an intriguing damsel in distress. And our action hero moves well, although he’s more Mist than Rain when delivering dialogue. »

Seen on: November 19, 2009
The players: Director: James McTeigue, Writer: J. Michael Straczynski, Cast: Rain, Naomie Harris, Ben Miles, Rick Yune
Facts of interest: Produced by Andy Wachowski and Larry Wachowski.
The plot: Rain plays a killer ninja who escapes from his clan and becomes a target himself. He also protects a Europol agent who knows too much about the ninjas.
Our thoughts: James McTeigue’s “Ninja Assassin” is one of the most ridiculous action flicks I’ve seen in a long time. Parts of it are indeed moderately entertaining, but all in all, it’s nothing but a brainless, unnecessary big-screen mess filled with terrible dialogue, monotonous action scenes and a story as thin as your admission ticket. »

"You're making a ninja movie... you can't say this is Citizen Kane," James McTeigue told me when I asked him about the light tone he maintained during Ninja Assassin, the second film he's directed with The Matrix visionaries Andy and Larry Wachowski on board as producers. Though McTeigue recognizes that V for Vendetta was advertised as a Wachowski movie first and McTeigue movie second, he sees Ninja Assassin as being very much his own thing, influenced by the Wachowskis of course, but also every other filmmaker who has inspired him in his career. I talked to McTeigue about his working relationship with the Wachowskis, his decision to cast Korean pop star Rain in the lead role as reformed assassin Raizo, the completely imaginary weapon that Rain fights with, and of course, keeping the tone light even when the screen is splattered with blood. A few months back, our resident comic book movie expert (and newly crowned Game Rant editor), Rob Keyes put together an excellent report on the future of the Superman film franchise, confirming rumors that The Wachowski Brothers’ protegé, James McTeigue, was in talks to helm a reboot. Then, in August, with McTeigue still denying any firm involvement in the movie, we learned the director’s dark vision for the film.
Despite the fact that McTeigue hadn’t officially joined the film, it was beginning to feel inevitable that Superman would enter production relatively soon. Then, faster than a speeding bullet, we found out that DC Entertainment didn’t even have plans for a Superman reboot, in part due to complicated legal disputes over the franchise. Now, we have even more confirmation that Superman has stalled out thanks to an interview James McTeigue gave to MTV.

I saw a commercial for Ninja Assassin this weekend with the tagline, "Only one ninja was harmed during the making of this movie. The rest...were killed!"
Ok, so that kind of gives away the ending - and thanks a lot - but it got me thinking if there were any new clips for the film online since we shared a bad-ass ninja brawl in the middle of traffic a few weeks ago. Because this flick is directed by James McTeigue (V for Vendetta), the hope is that there's loads of action and that the film will actually be at least somewhat satisfying on an intellectual level on top of that, although there's nothing wrong with an incredibly basic ninja movie that is stuffed with fight scenes and little else.
Well, we found a handful of scenes, most of which are, indeed, stuffed. And this gives us a chance to »

Six new video clips have emerged for Ninja Assassin, the latest action spectacle from producer Joel Silver and his V for Vendetta and Speed Racer partners, Andy and Larry Wachowski (the creators of The Matrix trilogy). The trio of producers brought V for Vendetta's director, James McTeigue, in to helm the feature, which was shot in Berlin, Germany.
Starring Korean pop star Rain in his first featured role, Ninja Assassin tells the story of Raizo, a boy trained to kill in an orphanage that serves as an assassin factory for the Ozunu Clan, a secret society thought only to exist in myth and legend. When Raizo attempts to escape from the clan and start a new life, they track him down to exact their revenge.

One of most fun-looking martial arts movies to come along in awhile is Ninja Assassin. It stars Korean mega pop star, Rain (in his first leading action role) and comes to us from director James McTeigue as well as The Wachowski brothers, the team who brought us the excellent comic book adaptation, V For Vendetta.
Ninja Assassin is about a ninja who defects from the orphanage where he was trained, only to be hunted by his ninja clan brethren whose very existence is considered a myth. But, as with a lot of these types of movies, the plot doesn’t really matter – all that matters is that the action is kick-ass and that certainly looks to be the case with this film.
Thanks to the guys over at Collider we have six new clips from Ninja Assassin, all provided within the one video player for your viewing convenience . Check the clips out below:

It has been a year and a half since DreamWorks announced a live-action, 3-D adaptation of Ghost in the Shell. There has been no movement on the anime-to-Hollywood conversion and like another Americanization, Akira, this seemed to have stalled in the planning stages.
Now Laeta Kalogridis has been brought in to take a new shot at the science fiction police thriller, according to Variety. She contributed screenplay bits to the Oliver Stone’s disastrous Alexander, but recently wrote and executive produced Scorsese’s Shutter Island. Fans may still be crossing their arms in defiance of the movie, but at least it’s an upgrade from Jamie Moss (Street Kings).
Ghost in the Shell is a franchise consisting of three manga volumes, three Japanese films, and an anime television series. The original GiTS opened in 1995, but it was redone with computer graphics in 2008 around the same time as DreamWorks acquired the rights. »
