Braveheart (1995) Direction: Mel Gibson Screenplay: Randall Wallace Cast: Mel Gibson, Sophie Marceau, Patrick McGoohan, Angus Macfadyen, James Robinson, Brendan Gleeson, Peter Hanly, Ian Bannen, James Cosmo, Catherine McCormack, David O’Hara, Brian Cox Mel Gibson in Braveheart Synopsis: In the 13th century, William Wallace (Mel Gibson), aka Braveheart (in this film), leads the Scottish against English forces in order to attain freedom for his people. The Pros: Production values that an estimated $50-70+ million could buy in the mid-1990s. (Much of this paean to Scottish nationalism was actually filmed in Ireland, thanks to tax concessions granted by the Irish government.) It ends. The Cons: After watching Ridley Scott’s Gladiator, I thought no other best picture Oscar winner could possibly be more mind-numbingly bad. I was wrong. Randall Wallace’s conventional [...] »

"20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Captain Nemo" has become a sink boat at Disney. Although it was previously reported that the remake of 1954 film "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" would be on a fast track, the studio has announced that they will not proceed with the movie for now.
Additionally, representative for McG, who was attached to direct and produce, has confirmed that the filmmaker left the project. As a consequence, the movie is on hold indefinitely until Disney's new chairman, Rich Ross, finds a good time to put it back into production once again.
"20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Captain Nemo" has actually had drafts by Randall Wallace and Bill Marsilii. The film, which was originally scheduled to begin its production in February 2010, was supposed to be an origin story about how Captain Nemo constructed his warship, the Nautilus.
Will Smith was wanted by McG to play the titular character, Nemo. Despite »

The klaxons are sounding for the Nautilus and Captain Nemo's origin story. Variety reports that Disney has quietly shelved the project, and McG has been released from duty in order to seek better fortune ashore.
The project was scheduled to begin production this February, and was on a fast track under Dick Cook. But as you probably remember, Cook was shown the door a few months ago. Many of Disney's big projects seem to be left dangling as stars like Johnny Depp decide whether they're sailing or staying ashore. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Captain Nemo is just the latest, though Disney insists big popcorn flicks will still be a focus for them.
Leagues had already been a revolving door of rumors, with Will Smith said to be in the running to play Nemo. Justin Marks was originally penning the script, but was replaced by Randall Wallace this past July. Variety »

When Disney chairman Dick Cook got the boot (or quit) a few weeks back, many guessed that the first high-profile casualty of his exit would be the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film. Not likely, as that's a film that Disney will keep afloat at almost any cost. As it turns out, the first big picture to shut down in the wake of Cook's exit was another big oceangoing effects film he'd championed. Captain Nemo: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, previously to be directed by McG from a Randall Wallace script, is no more. At least for now. My understanding is that the fate of this version of the movie was essentially sealed the moment the door closed on Cook's last day at Disney. Variety is reporting the film's demise -- or placement on 'indefinite hold' -- now, but unless what I've been told was quite wrong (always a possibility to »

Paramount's new Sapphire Series Blu-ray Disc line is designed to give the best of the best high definition treatment to the most requested and cherished films in the studio's catalog. Titles fans have been clamoring for since the format first launched several years ago that carry lengthy petitions for release. When it comes to the best of the best in film, there is no arguing Mel Gibson's 1995 Best Picture winner Braveheart deserved and was rightfully given a spot in the first Sapphire Series wave of titles to hit store shelves. Approaching 15 years since it burst onto the scene, Braveheart's mix of commitment, sacrifice for freedom, and the savagery of war continues to influence sweeping dramas with epic battle sequences to this day. Any creative historical liberties taken with William Wallace's struggle to keep Scotland from being assimilated into England are swallowed up by Gibson's vulnerable yet cunning »

-- Darren Aronofsky may be busy with "Black Swan" -- which sounds a lot like "Fight Club" with ballerinas to me -- but he's going to need something more grounded as a follow-up to 2008's Oscar-nominated "The Wrestler." And here it is. The filmmaker has partnered with Time Inc. Studios and Xyz Films to direct/produce an "indie heist thriller" based on the 2006 robbery of the Securitas Depot in Tonbridge, England, in which thieves made off with roughly $85 million. (Variety)
-- Columbia Pictures has picked up the rights to Lucy Prebble's stage play "Enron," which chronicles the high-profile fall of the Texas energy concern. Prebble will adapt her script for film and Laura Ziskin will produce, though no additional cast or crew players have yet been revealed. (Variety)

Sadly, this isn't about a sequel to the 2002 film Secretary. John Malkovich is joining Secretariat, the film directed by Braveheart writer Randall Wallace, about three people whose lives intersected, thanks to the champion horse Secretariat. (One of a few horses to win the Triple Crown of the Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes and Preakness Stakes.) If Seabiscuit didn't have the horseracing moxie you wanted, check out more details on this champ, after the break. Variety reports that Malkovich will play Lucien Laurin, the former horse jockey who became Secretariat's trainer. (Isn't he a little tall for an ex-horse jockey?) Diane Lane has already been announced as Penny Tweedy, owner of Meadow Farm, a horse breeding business in Virginia that was founded by her father Christopher. THR reports that Dylan Walsh has also come aboard as Tweedy's husband, an attorney who wants his wife waiting for him at home. Finally, Scott Glenn »

Filming begins this week in Louisiana and Kentucky on Secretariat, the story of the 1973 Triple-Crown-winning horse. Producers have rounded out the cast not a moment too soon by recently signing Dylan Walsh(”Nip/Tuck”), John Malkovich and Scott Glenn according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Also in the film is Diane Lane, who plays Secretariat’s unlikely owner Penny Tweedy. Walsh steps in as Lane’s successful attorney husband; Glenn plays a southern aristocrat who loses the horse in a coin flip; Malkovich is the trainer who underestimates the the horse’s abilities.
At the helm is Randall Wallace working from a script written by Mike Rich.
All I know about the story of Secretariat comes from Espn so this film could give some insight into the life of the famous equine and those who helped him along the way. I don’t expect this film to be a 31-length winner, »

Variety reports that John Malkovich has been cast to play Lucien Laurin in “Secretariat”, a film directed by Randall Wallace about the trainer of the 1973 Triple Crown winning racehorse. I’ve always thought that horse-racing would work well in film because the races seem like an extension of the character, like the boxing in “Raging Bull”, and not merely a match that is designed as another conflict to be overcome. Then again, Disney is producing it, so the film will probably be indistinguishable from “Glory Road” and “Miracle” and every other movie in which a scrappy group comes together to overcome all odds. It’s been a long time since you can say that a sports movie has actually tried to be different. Even “Hoosiers” and ” Rudy”, about as predictable as movies come, hardly seem formulaic. Randall Wallace wrote “Braveheart” and “Pearl Harbor”, as well as having directed and produced »

Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group has acquired most international distribution rights for Robert Rodriguez's Machete. The Los Angeles Times is reporting a story about the upcoming thriller Paranormal Activity, which apparently scared Steven Spielberg to the point he no longer wanted the film near his home. John Horn's report goes as follows: It was early 2008, and the director's DreamWorks studio was trying to decide whether it wanted to be a part of the micro-budgeted supernatural thriller. As the story goes, Spielberg had taken a "Paranormal Activity" DVD to his Pacific Palisades estate, and not long after he watched it, the door to his empty bedroom inexplicably locked from the inside, forcing him to summon a locksmith. While Spielberg didn't want the "Paranormal Activity »

John Malkovich, Scott Glenn and Dylan Walsh have joined the cast of Secretariat, Disney's horseracing movie about a Triple Crown-winning thoroughbred and his owner Penny Chenery (Diane Lane).Based on the true-story of the chestnut colt dubbed 'Big Red', Secretariat is a nags-to-riches tale that follows Chenery's journey from callow newcomer to first lady of racing. That came in 1973, when Secretariat won the Belmont Stakes, Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes in the same race season to become the first Triple Crown winner for 25 years. Click here for the full low-down.Malkovich will play Secretariat's charismatic trainer, a man whose self-assurance initially blinds him to the horse's potential. Walsh and Glenn, meanwhile, respectively star as Chenery's chauvinistic lawyer husband and the horse's former owner, a Southern aristocrat who loses him on the toss of a coin ("D'oh!"). Presumably neither will smooth her path to race glory.Secretariat director Randall Wallace »
