Splinterheads will be opening this weekend at the Regal Arbor Cinema in Austin, TX, Friday, November 13th for a limited and exclusive engagement. Austin is one of three cities selected along with Portland, Oregon, and New York City to run Splinterheads’ theatrical release so far. Director Brant Sersen, whose previous film Blackballed: The Bobby Dukes Story won the Audience Award at the 2004 SXSW Film Festival, will be in attendance at the November 13th opening; with leading man Thomas Middleditch possibly joining as well. Splinterheads premiered at the 2009 SXSW Film Festival. If you were in Austin this past weekend, you may have also seen the Splinterheads dunking booth at Fun Fun Fun Fest. Read the review by clicking here. Splinterheads introduces rapidly-rising improvisational comic Thomas Middleditch as Justin Frost, a twenty-something slacker whose “thing” is that he has no “thing” at all. Then, one summer night, he visits a touring carnival »

Splinterheads | Review

11 November 2009 6:32 PM, PST | SmellsLikeScreenSpirit | See recent SmellsLikeScreenSpirit news »

Director: Brant Sersen Writer(s): Brant Sersen Starring: Thomas Middleditch, Rachael Taylor, Lea Thompson, Christopher McDonald, Dean Winters, Frankie Faison, Jason Rogel Justin Frost (Thomas Middleditch) is a quirky, hyper and lanky twenty-something slacker. He works for his rotund best friend Wayne’s (Jason Rogel) landscaping business and still lives in his hometown with his mother (Lea Thompson from Back to the Future). Other than karate, he doesn’t seem to have any hobbies or skills or ambitions; as Justin proclaims, his “thing” is that he has no “thing” at all. Justin is preyed upon by a sexy con-artist named Galaxy (Rachael Taylor from Transformers). Galaxy is a carnie, uh-hum splinterhead, with a traveling carnival that has come to Justin’s home town. Since there’s little else to do, Justin and Wayne wind up spending a lot of time hanging around the carnival, thus bumping into Galaxy often. »

Indie Roundup: 'Splinterheads,' 'Ghost World,' 'Devil'

4 November 2009 2:10 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Clockwise from upper left: Splinterheads, Ghost World, An Education, House of the Devil.

Opening. Amiable and pleasant, Splinterheads revolves around a romance between Justin (Thomas Middleditch), an aimless small town dreamer, and Galaxy (Rachael Taylor), a gorgeous grifter who (literally) bumps into him at a gas station. She's more interested in separating him from his money than getting to know the lunkhead within, while he quickly decides that he's met the love of his life -- or, even better, a reason to leave his upstate New York world behind and start living for himself instead of his mother and grandfather.

Brent Sersen (Blackballed) is a better director than writer; the characters hold few surprises and the plot's trajectory threatens to die of old age before it reaches its pre-ordained conclusion. Still, he takes advantage of a visiting carnival and the grifter's obsession with geocaching, a variation on treasure hunting, to »

Your Holiday Indie Film Preview

4 November 2009 8:26 AM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

2009 is about to end with a bang, though probably not the apocalyptic kind predicted in the long-awaited adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's "The Road" or Chris Smith's terrifying doc "Collapse," though those will both be playing at your local arthouse. Instead, audiences will be able to enjoy a winter of wildly different indie film offerings to reflect the wildly different tastes of moviegoers as we leave one decade and move into another. (There are also many different ways to watch them, as you can tell from our Anywhere But a Movie Theater section.)

From November through January, there will be musicals ("Nine"), comedies (Broken Lizard's "The Slammin' Salmon") and stop-motion animated wonderments ("A Town Called Panic") to entertain and new films from Michael Haneke, Pedro Almodóvar, Richard Linklater, Terry Gilliam and Werner Herzog to ponder. And if new movies aren't necessarily doing the trick, you can always cozy »

Check Out 'Precious,' 'Splinterheads' And 'Still Bill' In This Week's unLimited

3 November 2009 11:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

"Paranormal Activity" has now made more than $85 million thanks to moviegoers literally demanding to see the low-budget horror flick in their city. And while grassroots promotional campaigns are nothing new in the film industry, this recent success is sure to spur more elaborate strategies from the studios. Well MTV isn't going to wait for them, especially with so many fine films out there that are simply overlooked beneath the crush of remakes and sequels. So every week I'll be spotlighting a few titles opening in limited release that are worthy of your time.

"Splinterheads"

What it is: The latest entry in the quirky, small town-set romantic comedy sub-genre. This one pairs up a socially retarded guy (Thomas Middleditch) and a gorgeous "Manic Pixie Dream Girl" (Rachael Taylor). From the director of the hilarious, underrated Rob Corddry mockumentary "Blackballed: The Bobby Dukes Story," Brett Sersen.

Blu-Ray Review: ‘Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles: The Complete Second Season’

6 October 2009 12:57 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – The excellent Blu-Ray release for the second season of “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” highlights what worked about this series that was cancelled far too soon. There were storytelling flaws and a male lead that never quite worked, but “Scc” delivered theatrical caliber sci-fi entertainment every week and it looks absolutely amazing in HD. It’s a show that will be missed.

Blu-Ray Rating: 4.0/5.0

When it came time to announce the fall schedules, most of us knew that Fox could only afford to renew one, relatively low-rated, sci-fi show - “Dollhouse” or “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles”. Most assumed it would be the latter but, as we all know by now, Eliza Dushku lived to fight another day, Lena Headey was stopped in her tracks, and Summer Glau actually jumped from the cancelled show to the one miraculously saved.

DVD Review: Third Season of Emmy-Winning ‘30 Rock’

6 October 2009 12:53 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Maybe you’ve heard of a little show called “30 Rock”? It doesn’t set the ratings on fire but critics and award-giving bodies go crazy for it like kids with pixie sticks. Personally, I think the third season of “30 Rock” was a slight step down from the second, but there’s no denying that this is one of the best comedies on television, as its recent major wins at the Emmys proved yet again.

DVD Rating: 4.0/5.0

Sitcom television is always about the ensemble. Think about your favorite comedies. Shows like “Seinfeld,” “Cheers,” “Arrested Development” - they were all amazing group efforts. “30 Rock” is no different. Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin, Jack McBrayer, Tracy Morgan, and Jane Krakowski may be the five faces peering out the front of the DVD box for the recently released third season, but even they regularly have their scenes stolen by the extended cast, one of the best on television. »

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles: Shirtless Thomas Dekker Thanks Fans and Calls Fox

16 May 2009 9:23 PM, PDT | TVSeriesFinale.com | See recent TVSeriesFinale news »

Each Spring, we TV fans tend to get a little bit crazy. Lots of our favorite shows are in danger of being cancelled and we're all on edge, waiting to see which ones will be back next season. Well, it turns out that the stars are kept in dark just as much as we are!

Fox's Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles series continues the ongoing saga that began with the Arnold Schwarzenegger classic back in 1984. The small-screen chapter features the talents of performers like Lena Headey, Thomas Dekker, Summer Glau, Richard T. Jones, and Brian Austin Green, Garret Dillahunt, Shirley Manson, Leven Rambin, Dean Winters, Stephanie Jacobsen, Mackenzie Brooke Smith, and Sonya Walger.

The sci-fi series completed its second season a few weeks ago and was hardly a ratings winner. Though the highly-anticipated Terminator Salvation movie is coming out on May 21st, not enough people wanted to watch a weekly series. »

In just a little over a month from now, a whole bunch of Cinematical lunatics will stomp their way through Austin, Texas in search of the next great indie beauty via the 2009 South By Southwest Film Festival. And, like we do for a few other festivals each year, we'll be previewing some films, debuting images, clips and trailers -- while basically trying our best to keep you in the loop with regards to what's going on in this groovy film world.

First up for us (and you) this year is this exclusive first look at the film Splinterheads, which, sadly, is not a documentary about fans of the character Splinter from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles -- but is, instead, a romantic comedy for the Harold and Kumar crowd (or so I've been told).
