Oscar MythBusting: One Day They'll Be Nominated!

2 December 2009 9:00 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Most fans of established actors believe that one day their favorite will be nominated for an Oscar. In 2009 campaigns hopes are particularly high for Sandra Bullock, Alfred Molina, Colin Firth and Christopher Plummer. Fans of James McAvoy and Sam Rockwell still hold out longshot hope. But guess what? The odds are, generally speaking, against them on February 2nd (two months hence!) when the lucky 20 are called.

Most actors aren't ever nominated for the big prize. People seemed surprise to read in an old Oscar Mythbusting column I wrote years ago that the majority of nominated actors (approximately 67%) never receive a second nomination. But I did the research and it's true. Even less likely than a second nomination: a first one. Consider this...

The following (living) legends have still never been nominated despite rich bodies of work and several classic films or exuberantly praised performances: Mia Farrow, Isabelle Huppert, Christopher Plummer and Donald Sutherland. »

Thanksgiving, movies, and reasons to be grateful

28 November 2009 7:31 PM, PST | EW.com - The Movie Critics | See recent EW.com - The Movie Critics news »

The gratitude lists emailed among friends and families this Thanksgiving are lovely and thoughtful, expressing heartfelt appreciation for  food, shelter, health, friends, family, babies' smiles, rainbows, Mom's lasagna, all that good stuff. The only problem is, when mentioned in the same breath as Mom and rainbows, offering thanks for the genius of Netflix looks pretty puny. But not here: Here's where movie lovers can offer up movie love in the spirit of the holiday. I'll go first: 1. Thanks to great American actors whose appearances invigorate every movie they're in. My choice trio: Philip Seymour Hoffman, Catherine Keener, and Jeffrey Wright, »

Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway Asked to Join A-Team

1 July 2009 5:05 AM, PDT | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

Hugh Jackman may have hosted this year's Oscars, but he really wasn't a member of the club. On Tuesday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences took steps to rectify that - inviting the Wolverine star to join the honorary body, along with such other prospective new members as Anne Hathaway, Michael Cera, James Franco, Michelle Williams and Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle. "These filmmakers have, over the course of their careers, captured the imagination of audiences around the world," said Academy president Sid Ganis, according to the Hollywood Reporter. 134 New Names Invited to Join the Academy

1 July 2009 1:08 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Yesterday came the yearly announcement from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as it extended 134 invitations to several artists and executives "who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures" read the press release. Of course all of them can decline, but I wouldn't necessarily expect that to happen as all who accept the invitation will be the only additions in 2009 to the Academy's roster of voting members. "These filmmakers have, over the course of their careers, captured the imagination of audiences around the world," said Academy President Sid Ganis. "It's this kind of talent and creativity that make up the Academy, and I welcome each of them to our ranks." The list follows below and reading around the best analysis I saw of it came from Nathaniel Rogers at The Film Experience who, among other things, pointed out the addition of longtime Darren Aronofsky's »

Welcome to the Academy Emily Blunt, Emily Blunt

30 June 2009 12:30 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

It's that time of year again when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (aka AMPAS aka The Oscars) invites more Hollywood peeps to join them. In Contention shares the list and rather than repeat the whole thing for you or reiterate last year's first time nominees who are mostly invited (you remember them), I'd just like to pinpoint a few random names I'm especially happy / surprised to see so recognized. They are...

Emily Blunt who should've been nominated for The Devil Wears Prada.James Franco ... was it the Milk snub?Hugh Jackman did such a fine job as host. Now that he's a member so there's one more vote for the next time Nicole Kidman gives a brilliant performance. Woot!Jane Lynch is always a comic highlight. Her inclusion delights me

Rumor: Michael Sheen as Ernst Blofeld in 'Bond 23'?

17 June 2009 10:27 AM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

I thought that at least in one of his two roles supporting Best Actor or Actress nominees, Michael Sheen should have received an Oscar nomination himself. But at least he's being recognized for his work in The Queen and Frost/Nixon in other ways. He's getting better roles, including a rather high profile stint in New Moon later this year.

But how about Sheen as the eternal Bond villain, Ernst Blofeld? The Guardian reports that Sheen is "reported to be in negoiations" to play Blofeld in the 23rd 007 movie. This isn't the first time the new Bond series has fallen back on old characters; Jeffrey Wright's Felix Leiter character has been played by seven other actors over the years and was, obviously, a key part of the past two films.

But Blofeld is a different kettle of fish. He's the man behind Spectre, the evil global criminal organization featured »

Top 7 Ultimate Christian Bale Roles

22 May 2009 4:02 PM, PDT | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

We start the Top 7. You finish the Top 10.

It seems that every role for Christian Bale is a type of event. He is famously known for lunging himself into his roles, usually playing a hero (Batman) or villain (Bateman), or an obtuse mix of the two (Jim from Harsh Times). Considering his work in the past ten years, he both portrayed iconic characters (Bruce Wayne, and now John Connor) and in turn has made some of his characters iconic (Patrick Bateman of American Psycho). With each role he seems to meet his standard of impressiveness, though this could be argued against his take on John Connor in Terminator Salvation (you can read Jeff Bayer’s review here), chugging ahead with even the most lackluster of roles and movies (Reign of Fire) and unearthing a certain type of quality not many other actors can provide. DreamWorks to Produce New Martin Luther King Jr. Biopic

19 May 2009 7:57 AM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

It's been more than 30 years since Abby Mann's Emmy-winning miniseries King, so it's about time someone made a feature biopic about Martin Luther King Jr., right? That someone just so happens to be Steven Spielberg, who will produce such a film for DreamWorks, along with Oscar-winning screenwriter Suzanne de Passe (Lady Sings the Blues) and her Humpty Dumpty co-producer Madison Jones. Though Mlk has appeared as a character in many films since his assassination in 1968, this is apparently the first to be approved by King's estate, meaning it will have access to all of the civil rights leader's intellectual property. Obviously this is going to be one heck of an Oscar-baited biopic, and Spielberg will have to find just the right person to play Mlk. In the past he's been portrayed by actors including James Earl Jones, Paul Winfield, LeVar Burton, Robert Guillaume, Courtney B. Vance, Jeffrey Wright, »

Quantum of Solace

DVD Review Quantum of Solace Directed by: Marc Forster Cast: Daniel Craig, Olga Kurylenko, Judi Dench, Mathieu Amalric, Jeffrey Wright Running Time: 1 hr 40 mins Rating: PG-13 Plot: James Bond (Daniel Craig) picks up right where he left off … kicking arse. Still seeking revenge for the death of his true love Vesper (who betrayed him), Bond encounters Dominic Greene (Mathieu Amalric), an environmentalist who has sinister motives. Who’s It For? Action fans will flock. No romance this time … and if all you care about is gadgets and villains … take a deep breath, you aren’t getting your fill here. Movie: How can we care? Heavy on action, but still light on what made the Bond films truly tick. There are no memorable gadgets, no super villains »

Blu-Ray Review: ‘Quantum of Solace’ Offers Action Ride, Average Blu-Ray

19 March 2009 6:38 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Blu-Ray Rating: 3.0/5.0 Chicago – “Quantum of Solace,” the second Daniel Craig 007 movie after the earthquake to the franchise that was the brilliant “Casino Royale,” didn’t make quite the same waves in the action genre and left a few viewers dissatisfied but it still makes for a better-than-average action movie rental. Sadly, MGM continues to struggle a bit in the HD revolution, releasing a so-so Blu-Ray that won’t help the viewers who felt let down by the film in theaters.

If “Casino Royale” was the rock ‘n’ roll set that we knew this classic character was still capable of producing with the right star, script, and production team, “Quantum of Solace” is the encore. It may not be as purely satisfying, but it still rocks in its own way.

Quantum of Solace will be released on Blu-Ray on March 24th, 2009.

Cadillac Records - DVD Review

If Leonard Chess hadn.t started selling records out of the back of his Cadillac perhaps we wouldn.t have rock .n. roll today. Well, that might be a stretch, but Chuck Berry did start what Elvis got all the credit for. Leonard Chess (Adrien Brody) always wanted to amount to something. He opens a black night club to try and make his fortune. He.s approached by a traveling record saleswoman to see if he knows of any black talent that she can record and sell. Muddy Waters (Jeffrey Wright) and Little Walter (Columbus Short) are in a band called the All-Star Trio, but they.re known as the headhunters on the circuit. Blu-Ray Review: ‘Cadillac Records’ With Beyonce Knowles a Greatest Hits Album of Blues Legends

12 March 2009 5:58 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Blu-Ray Rating: 3.0/5.0 Chicago – There’s a lot to like about the individual parts of “Cadillac Records,” now on Blu-Ray, but they never come together to form a cohesive sum. A frustratingly episodic film, “Records” crams too many stories into one movie, ending up more like a greatest hits album than a creative vision of its very own.

If each individual story in “Cadillac Records” causes young viewers to go back and learn more about the early days of rock and roll and the music of Etta James, Chuck Berry, Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, and Little Walter than the film will have done some good, but I’ll never understand the logic of trying to shove all their stories into a film under two hours long.

Cadillac Records was released on Blu-Ray on March 10th, 2009.

By

Allen Gardner

Let The Right One In (Magnolia) An awkward 12 year-old boy, ignored by his mother and the target of bullies, finds himself drawn to his new neighbor: a girl his own age who only appears at night, and seems herself to be as lonely an outcast as he. Haunting film from Sweden is best described as The 400 Blows meets Nosferatu, and contains some of the most haunting imagery of any film in recent memory. Truly a unique and memorable work. Bonuses: Deleted scenes; Featurette; Photo and poster gallery. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.

Paramount Centennial Collection Paramount offers two more classic titles, restored, remastered and loaded with extras. Alfred Hitchcock’s To Catch A Thief stars Cary Grant as a retired jewel thief trying to enjoy his sunset years on the French Riviera with a minimum of drama, until he catches the eye of a high-maintenance heiress (Grace Kelly, »

Auto of the week: 1949 Cadillac Series 62

24 February 2009 4:43 AM, PST | Boxwish.com | See recent BoxWish news »

This is the week for car named movies. There’s Clint Eastwood getting grouchy in culture clash drama Gran Torino in which he keeps a (yes, you guessed it) 1972 Gran Torino (read more on this motor here) and Cadillac Records. As the title suggests there’s a strong whiff of Cadillac in this tale charting the emergence of Chess Records, musical home to the likes of Etta James (played by Beyoncé Knowles), Muddy Waters (Jeffrey Wright) and Chuck Berry (Mos Def) all overseen by label mogul Leonard Chess (Adrien Brody) and we’ve sifted through the many in the movie to bring you a retro auto of the week – the 1949 Cadillac Series 62.

To celebrate his musicians scoring a hit record, Leonard gifts them each with a Cadillac, a bonus that doesn’t go unappreciated. “Black folks driving around in Cadillacs – I think I’ve died and gone to heaven,” exclaims »

Blu-Ray Review: Oliver Stone’s ‘W.’ Disappointing Film, Great Blu-Ray

19 February 2009 6:08 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – What happened to Oliver Stone? Despite strong performances by Josh Brolin, James Cromwell, and Elizabeth Banks, “W.” is one of the most inert, middle-of-the-road movies that this once-controversial auteur has ever made, helped on the home market by an excellent Blu-Ray release but still a little “eh” as a film.

Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0 The previews and advertising campaign for “W.” made it out to be a satirical jab at the most openly ridiculed President in the history of the United States. The satirical use of “What a Wonderful World” over footage of the last eight years and the tagline on the great posters - “A life misunderestimated.” - promised a no-holds-barred skewering by one of the best filmmakers of the last quarter-century.

W. was released on Blu-Ray on February 17th, 2009.

Participant Productions may climb on board 'The Attack'

Participant Productions may jump on Focus Features' "The Attack."   Based on the book by Yasmina Khadra, the story tells of an Arab surgeon based in Tel Aviv discovers that his wife has been involved in a suicide bombing. The film is to be directed by Lebanese helmer Ziad Doueiri who is adapting the project.   Participant is no stranger in projects on the Middle East; the company financed Stephen Gaghan's "Syriana" starring George Clooney, Matt Damon, Chris Cooper and Jeffrey Wright back in 2005. That film earned Geroge Clooney an Oscar® and Golden Globe win.       »

DVD Links: DVD News | Release Dates | New Dvds | Reviews | RSS Feed A Time to Kill I really like this film and have been waiting for an opportunity to buy it since the DVD release has always included the first half of the film on one side of the disc and the second half on the other side, easily one of the most annoying ideas to come out of the early days of DVD. However, now that it is on Blu-ray there is finally a version worth buying and you can believe I will be picking this one up. The Rock Collection

The Rundown / Doom / The Scorpion King Last night I popped in Doom and watched about 30 minutes or so of it and one thing I noticed, that I hadn't before, is the high definition picture really made the Rock's back look sort of weird where they tried to cover up all his tats. »
