Paul is a U.S. contractor working in Iraq. After an attack by a group of Iraqis he wakes to find he buried alive inside a coffin. With only a lighter and a cell phone it’s a race against time to escape this claustrophobic death trap.
Say what you will about Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds, the man has shown a consistent willingness - an eagerness, even - to push himself into new territory. And the next new ground for Reynolds will be under it, starring in Rodrigo Cortes’ buried-alive thriller Buried. The film marks the feature debut for Cortes, yet another highly acclaimed Spaniard making the move into English language features, though this one is Spanish co-production , which should leave him the freedom to put his own stamp on things. Finally the film that inspired Quarantine, Rec (review here), is getting a Us DVD release of its own on July 14, 2009, and the sequel we've all been waiting for got its very own website. It's a good day to be a Rec fan!
Synopsis
A beautiful TV reporter and her cameraman are doing a routine interview at a local fire station when an emergency call comes in. Accompanying the firefighters to a nearby apartment, the news team begins recording the bloodcurdling screams coming from inside an elderly woman's unit. After authorities seal off the building to contain the threat, the news crew, firefighters, and residents are trapped to face a lethal terror inside. With the camera running, nothing may survive but the film itself.
No word yet on cover art or special features.

When discussing the current wave of intelligent genre film coming out of Spain these days people have often asked a pair of questions, why Spain and why now? A decent number of possibilities have been put forward, from schooling to the close knit, supportive community but I think there’s a simpler explanation. Fifteen years ago, when most of the current wave were settling on what Spanish film was, directors like Juanma Bajo Ulloa were making films like La Madre Muerta. Though he may not be particularly well known outside of Spain it seems perfectly clear to me that Bajo Ulloa is a spiritual forefather to many in the current wave, that the road from Bajo Ulloa to film makers such as Ja Bayona (The Orphanage), Nacho Vigalondo (Timecrimes) and Luis Berdejo (The New Daughter) runs straight and true.

[For this week’s edition of the Twitch Video Salute we welcome special guest saluter Luis Berdejo, writer of hit Spanish horror film [Rec] - remade on these shores as Quarantine - and director of upcoming feature The New Daughter.]
A few months ago I wrote this list of my favorite movies ever. When I began I didn’t realize that the films shared common elements but looking back on it I realized that there were a couple of things that each film shared: the main character hardly speaks and nature is very important in the story. You’ll find trailers for all five below.
