Gibson, DiCaprio Teaming for Viking Drama

17 December 2009 4:28 AM, PST | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Mel Gibson and Leonardo DiCaprio are teaming for an untitled period drama about Viking culture.  William Monahan (The Departed) is writing the script and will produce.

If the thought of that trio working together doesn’t excite you, imagine Leo swinging a massive axe while pillaging and wearing a horned helm in an epic Braveheart-style battle.  Or, since I don’t have a picture of that, here’s an image of a viking versus a shark to pique your interest.

Variety confirmed the story, but wasn’t able to get further details on where this epic viking tale is headed.  They did promise it “will be as unsparing as Gibson’s other period directing efforts.”  Might I suggest into the ocean?  Because Outlander meets Jaws sounds pretty great right now…

Gibson’s last directorial outing was in 2006 with Apocalypto.  He then took a hiatus from Hollywood following a drunken, »

Leonardo DiCaprio and Mel Gibson Team for Viking Movie

14 December 2009 4:39 PM, PST | Fandango | See recent Fandango news »

No, Leonardo DiCaprio and Mel Gibson won't be making a movie about the Minnesota Vikings' Cinderella season. Instead, the two Hollywood powerhouses are joining forces for an untitled period film about Viking culture. Yup, those Vikings.   Variety tells us that Mel Gibson will direct the movie and Leonardo DiCaprio will star. As of right now, the plan is to push the film into production next fall. With DiCaprio in the lead role, this will be the first Gibson-directed film to star a big-name actor (aside from the films that starred Gibson himself, like Braveheart and The Man Without a Face). It also comes with a pretty solid team behind the scenes, as William Monahan (The Departed) wrote the script, and Graham King (The Departed) is producing.   Not much at all is being said...

Leonardo DiCaprio To Wear Viking Horns In Mel Gibson-Directed Drama

14 December 2009 10:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Norse history is going to hit in a big way in 2011. First and foremost, there's "Thor," based on the Marvel comic inspired by Norse mythology. And if Wikipedia is correct (unlikely), there's a chance of a long-ago-rumored live-action "Hagar the Horrible" movie set for release that year. Finally, a drama about Vikings from director Mel Gibson and producer Graham King ("The Departed") is set to begin shooting next fall, meaning it will probably be in theaters at some time the following year.

According to Variety, Viking history enthusiast Leonardo DiCaprio will star in the untitled film, which is currently being scripted by William Monahan (both of whom also had a hand in "The Departed"). The plot has not been revealed, but we can presume this will be a bloody action epic, similar to Gibson's "Braveheart." Perhaps there will also be some sort of focus on the Christianization of Scandinavia during the Viking Age, »

Gibson And DiCaprio Possibly Teaming For Viking Movie

14 December 2009 10:00 AM, PST | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

According to Variety, the movie likely to be Mel Gibson’s next directorial effort will be a viking story, written by William Monahan (The Departed, Kingdom of Heaven), and starring once and future heartthrob Leonardo DiCaprio. It’s really early in the process to be saying this – as Gibson is finishing up The Beaver with Jodie Foster, and DiCaprio just finished principal photography on Christopher Nolan’s Inception – but I got pretty excited when I read the headline to the story.

Of course, I initially had hoped that maybe Gibson was going to star in the movie as well, but he’s done well enough with the period movies where he was just behind the camera (Apocalypto). Monahan, has been on a steady role since breaking in, with KoH being his first credited feature writing gig. He also scripted the soon to be released Martin Campbell, Mel Gibson starring movie Edge of Darkness. »

Mel Gibson and Leonardo DiCaprio Get Their Viking On

14 December 2009 8:46 AM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Call him crazy if you want (no, please, don’t), but Mel Gibson loves him some grungy period storytelling. His latest, which he will also direct, will be set during the time of the Vikings, and he’s already landed his star in Leonardo DiCaprio. The movie doesn’t currently have a title or even a concrete plot, except that it will be a “period drama set in the world of Viking culture”. William Monahan, who wrote “The Departed” and the Gibson cop movie “Edge of Darkness”, will pen the flick, while Graham King, who produced both “Departed” and “Darkness”, will be doing producing duties on this one as well. “This will be an awe-inspiring story, created with some of the industry’s finest cinematic talent and I am just over the moon to be making this film with Mel, Leo and Bill,” King said in a statement after the »

Mel Gibson and Leonardo DiCaprio Tackle Vikings

Hwaet! Praise of the prowess of handsome film kings / of sharp-eyed actor-directors in days now passing / we have heard, and what amazement the readers have!

Or in other words, Mel Gibson is stepping behind the camera again. According to Variety, he will be directing Leonardo DiCaprio in an untitled Viking drama that will be penned by William Monahan, and produced by Graham King. It'll be a reunion rarely seen outside a mead hall, as Monahan and King penned and produced Edge of Darkness and The Departed. They'll all be sailing pretty far off the shores of Boston for this one, and are expected to make the journey in fall 2010.

All involved have only confirmed the project, but aren't releasing any plot details except that DiCaprio will apparently be playing a Viking. Variety says he's always been interested in the frozen north, and jumped at the chance to explore the topic with Gibson. »

Leonardo DiCaprio to Star in Mel Gibson-Directed Viking Epic

Mel Gibson has finally announced plans for his next gig behind the camera, and after seeing Apocalypto, I can honestly say I'm ready to follow him just about anywhere. Fortunately, this sounds like it is definitely in the same vein as most of Mel's previous directorial work. According to Variety [1], he will be teaming up with Leonardo DiCaprio for "an untitled period drama set in the world of Viking culture". Sold! The script for the film is being written by William Monahan (The Departed, Kingdom of Heaven), who also recently co-wrote Gibson's latest starring vehicle, Edge of Darkness. They are hoping to start shooting next fall, and the project will be financed independently, seeking distribution after the fact in order to avoid studio meddling. Hollywood Ink: Leonardo DiCaprio Goes Viking for Mel Gibson

· For those of us who like to complain about Hollywood being out of ideas, I guess this is what we get: Mel Gibson will direct Leonardo DiCaprio in an untitled action-drama about vikings. Little else is known about the project, though DiCaprio's Departed braintrust of producer Graham King and screenwriter William Monahan are also on board the stars' furry, formidable vessel. Presumably this means Gibson won't be using that Mexican prison after all, unless of course the story covers the infamous, ill-conceived Viking Spring Break in Veracruz back in 944 Ad. [Variety]

Disney spikes yet another A-lister, Rabbit adds another name, and more Hollywood Ink after the jump. »
