First photos from The Reef

3 November 2009 10:28 AM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Fango just spent some time on the set of The Reef, the new film by Andrew Traucki (the Australian filmmaker who co-directed and co-scripted 2007’s exceptional killer-crocodile flick Black Water) and came back with a couple of exclusive pics, which you can see below. Traucki, a longtime surfer who couldn’t stay away from the water if he tried, is once again investigating the theme of large predatory animal interactions with humans, but is wading into much deeper here.

And if you’d like to share the experiences of the cast and crew of The Reef (which we first reported on here), you can join them live when they stream on-line in real time from the location in Hervey Bay, Queensland this Wednesday, November 4 if you’re U.S./UK-based and Thursday, Nov. 5 for Australians. Check out the film’s official website to sign up, and also read a production blog and other info. »

Wortho the wait?

"Aussie actors take fifteen hours to get to America - we ain' t going to waste our fucking time and money. And that means we're not going to waste their time." He might be firing up big time overseas with leading roles in mega-budgeted films like Terminator Salvation, the highly anticipated Avatar and the upcoming Clash Of The Titans remake, but Sam Worthington obviously still has a hearty interest in the local film industry. The star of such Aussie flicks as Dirty Deeds, Somersault and Gettin' Square has just been announced as one of the presenters at this year's Inside Film Awards on November 18, alongside fellow thesps Emily Barclay, Aden Young, Gyton Grantley, Emma Booth, Justine Clarke and Megan Gale. »

First Details: The Reef Shows its Teeth

15 September 2009 7:58 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Sharks are probably one of the scariest creatures on the planet. There's just no reasoning with them. You're not a person in their cold black eyes. You, just like everything else in their way, are simply lunch. Hell, depending on your size, maybe even just a snack! It's that very justified fear of these creatures that the filmmakers behind The Reef hope to tap into.

The Reef is Aussie writer/director/producer Andrew (Black Water) Traucki's second feature, and you can keep tabs on his progress via The Reef Blog. He describes the film as "swimming the line between horror and psychological thriller, a terrifying tale of true survival. A tale that for me asks the fascinating questions, What would I do in this situation? How would I react? Would I be a survivor or would I die?"

The film's official site states the film is based on a true story and provides a synopsis. »

First Details On Australian Thriller The Reef

15 September 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

Pre-production has begun on The Reef at Sydney, Australia's Fox Studios for Mysterious Light and ProdigyMovies. Damian Walshe-Howling, Zoe Naylor, Gyton Grantley, Adrienne Pickering and Kieran Darcy-Smith star as four friends who are forced to swim ashore when their boat capsizes in the Great Barrier Reef. Here's the rub: They're stalked by a 15-foot great white shark. Writer-director Andrew Traucki ( Black Water ) asserts he will not use any CGI or animatronics when it comes to the sharks. Instead, he'll use live footage of great whites shot in Southern Australia. Principal photography begins this October in Hervey Bay in Queensland; you'll be able to keep tabs on production via a live video stream that will go live on November 5. Killer sharks and fog rolling Down Under

9 September 2009 4:07 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Fango’s Australian correspondent Michael Helms sent along casting and other details on two new projects getting ready to roll there, both of which showcase nature gone amok. The more horrific of the two is The Reef, the latest from Andrew Traucki, who co-wrote and co-directed (with David Nerlich) the killer-crocodile flick Black Water.

Reteaming Traucki with Black Water producer Michael Robertson, The Reef stars Aussie actors Damian Walshe-Howling, Zoe Naylor, Gyton Grantley, Adrienne Pickering and Kieran Darcy-Smith in the story of a group of friends whose boat capsizes on a jaunt to the Great Barrier Reef. Deciding to attempt a swim to the distant shore, they find themselves being stalked by a great white shark intent on making meals out of them. The $3.5 million (Australian) film is set to begin a five-week shoot October 12 in Queensland’s Hervey Bay; additional live shark footage will be captured in South Australia. »
