Elm Street and Friday 13th Updates

21 December 2009 11:23 PM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Readers, do not be concerned. The Nightmare on Elm Street re-shoots are par for the course, and Friday 13th Part 2 3D is still on the Platinum Dunes agenda. You have nothing to fear. Or perhaps everything.Dunes producer Brad Fuller, updating the production company's official blog page, has set out to lower the all the raised eyebrows that followed the announcement of Elm Street reshoots in the wake of its test screenings. "We're doing a couple of days, and everyone seems to be making a big deal out of it," he says, going on to point out that every single Dunes film to date has gone through a similar process. He won't specify what exactly is going before the cameras for the second time, but says "the fans' input has always been valuable, and suffice to say we listened."Meanwhile at Crystal Lake, there's an eerie silence (chi-chi-chi ka-ka-ka...) Eisner Now Brooding

15 December 2009 5:29 PM, PST | iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news »

On the heels of my earlier comments about some commercial dude directing The Creature From The Black Lagoon remake instead of Breck Eisner, I can report that, according to the L.A. Times, Eisner will be directing another remake:  David Cronenberg's The Brood.

Eisner's remake of The Crazies has been getting lots of love on other horror sites of late, but I'll reserve my comments on the film until I see it (and if it lacks the social commentary of George Romero's original, those who criticized Zach Snyder's Dawn Of The Dead remake for eschewing Romero's commentary on consumerism should be equally upset with Eisner).

The one comment I will make is about a new type of director that's emerging in horror of late:  the sequel king.  Guys like Eisner and Marcus Nispel threaten to throw themselves into a horror ghetto where all they will be known for »

Will Conan Be Played by Colossus?

12 December 2009 9:10 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Everyone is understandably curious to learn who will play Conan in director Marcus Nispel's cinematic reboot of Robert E. Howard's mythical conqueror. While attending a 'Twilight' convention this weekend, comicbookmovie.com had an opportunity to speak with Daniel Cudmore — who played Colossus in the 'X-Men' franchise — who revealed a little more info about the Conan remake.

Cudmore said that the new film will be much darker than the Schwarzenegger versions, and that there are currently two contenders for the lead role: himself and Roland Kickinger.

An Austrian by birth, Kickinger is perhaps best known for doubling as Arnold in last summer's Terminator Salvation, and for portraying the Austrian bodybuilder in the biopic See Arnold Run.

Cudmore, on the other hand, is, at 28, younger than Kickinger, and 6'7" tall.

So while one of these guys has the height advantage (Cudmore), the other appears to have a slight breadth advantage »

Frank Miller exits Buck Rogers remake, plus Conan and Kull updates

10 December 2009 5:30 PM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Frank Miller is no longer on board the planned big-screen return of space pilot Buck Rogers, it's been revealed.

Miller co-directed Sin City, adapted from his own comics, and more recently helmed comic strip adaptation The Spirit. He also wrote the graphic novel on which Zack Snyder's 300 was based.

Last year he became involved with the Buck Rogers project reportedly because he knew the head of the Dille Trust which had owned the rights before they were acquired by Nu Image/Millennium Films.

As I reported at the time, Miller was set to direct the feature and make it a much darker, edgier version than the 1979-1981 TV series starring Gil Gerard and Erin Gray.

Paradox Entertainment, along with Lawrence Abramson and George Furla, is producing Buck Rogers.

Paradox president and CEO Fredrik Malmberg told IGN that Miller was attached to direct an earlier incarnation developed by different producers and is no longer involved. »

Teenage 'Conan' Rumors Debunked, Frank Miller Off 'Buck Rogers' Movie

4 December 2009 9:31 AM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

The long-awaited “Conan the Barbarian” reboot by director Marcus Nispel is picking up steam and the casting process has been well underway for the last month.

During an interview with IGN, Paradox Entertainment president Fredrik Malmberg revealed that “Conan” will be their next project to hit the big screen. And while no final casting decisions have been made yet, Malmberg stated that rumors that Conan would be a teenager for most of the movie are false.

Malmberg also confirmed that Frank Miller is no longer attached to direct the adaptation of the classic sci-fi comic strip, “Buck Rogers.” Miller’s removal has been suspected ever since the dismal box office performance of “The Spirit.”

In addition to “Conan”, Paradox is bringing a number of Robert E. Howard’s creations to the big screen. The recently announced “Kull the Conqueror” reboot will be written by Matthew Sands — the “Ninja Assassins” screenwriter »

10 Examples Of A Pulse In The Modern Slasher

3 December 2009 8:17 PM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

After the 80's passed it seemed that - for the most part - the slasher craze had finally come to a rest. Successful franchises like Halloween, Nightmare On Elm Street and Friday The 13th had been siphoned beyond emptiness and any intrigue the sub genre once offered appeared dead and buried. Then 1996 rolled around and Wes Craven, Kevin Williamson and Neve Campbell reminded us that good directing, storytelling, and acting is alive and well with the surprise hit Scream.

The next couple of years provided a massive batch of 'fresh' copycats and a handful of Scream sequels. Very few of any are remotely near noteworthy (quick nod to I Know What You Did Last Summer in order to avoid the onslaught of negative commentary from the obsessed Sarah Michelle Gellar fans out there J ), though Scream 2 remains a memorable franchise installment based solely on the unexpected axing of series favorite Randy (Jamie Kennedy) Meeks. »

Whatever Happened to 'Tekken'?

1 December 2009 9:45 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Splendid news regarding the upcoming 'Tekken' movie adaptation, unless you’re a fan of the video game series who doesn’t speak German.

According to Variety, Splendid Film has acquired the rights to 'Tekken', along with a number of other fantasy and horror movies, for distribution in the German-speaking territories. The other films include Marcus Nispel’s upcoming Conan; the horror-thriller The Collector, helmed by Marcus Dunstan; and Mr. Nobody, a supernatural thriller starring Val Kilmer.

Dwight Little’s Tekken was the film that really grabbed my attention, since I recall the announcement of it roughly two years ago. It premiered at the American Film Market last month, but its current U.S. distributors — The Weinstein Company, Summit Entertainment, and Crystal Sky Pictures — have remained relatively quiet. Unfortunately, the combination of only a vague U.S. 2010 release date, along with the announcement of an overseas distributor »

The Yellow Rose of "Texas Chainsaw"

26 November 2009 1:10 PM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Although Jessica Biel is voicing a sweet, green alien girl in the upcoming animated film Planet 51 and was the cute daughter on the long-running family drama 7th Heaven, she was able to successfully overturn her wholesome girl-next-door image when she starred in Marcus Nispel's bloody reboot of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. During press for Planet 51, Biel took a few moments to discuss her experience in 2003 slasher.

As Erin, the female lead, Biel looked great in a 1973 macrame halter top, screamed like a champ and successfully avoided mutilation and meathooks from a Mullet-headed Leatherface. The film was a hit, spawning a Biel-less prequel that bombed.

"Doing a movie like Texas Chainsaw Massacre was the complete opposite extreme for me--opposite of everything," she declares.

"Making Texas was probably one of the hardest experiences for me emotionally," Jessica Biel says thoughtfully. "Emotionally and creatively, it was really intense."

New movie adaptation planned for barbarian warrior Kull

24 November 2009 3:43 AM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Paradox Entertainment says it is planning a new film based on the warrior hero Kull.

Paradox's CEO Fredrik Malmberg revealed plans for the reboot to French website Fantasy.fr.

Robert E Howard, who also created Conan, introduced Kull in a 1929 issue of the pulp magazine Weird Tales. The character later appeared in comics by Marvel and more recently Dark Horse.

Born in Atlantis around 20,000Bc, Kull is exiled over a mercy killing and later vecomes a mercenary and eventually king of Valusia on the neighbouring continent of Thuria.

A film adaptation, Kull the Conqueror, was released in 1997, directed by John Nicolella and starring Kevin Sorbo in the title role. Other cast members included Tia Carrere, Harvey Fierstein and Primeval star Douglas Henshall.

The Universal movie, which was a box office dud, was in fact an adaptation of Howard's Conan novel The Hour of the Dragon, with the lead character »

More Kull? Minus Kevin Sorbo? Say It Ain’t So!

23 November 2009 8:50 AM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

At about the same time he became known for the muscle-bound Hercules, Kevin Sorbo was the muscle-bound Kull in 1997’s “Kull The Conqueror”. Okay, so you probably don’t remember Sorbo as “Kull” unless you’re a really, really big fan, which may be why Paradox Entertainment has plans to reboot the franchise without Sorbo in the lead. The original co-starred Tia Carrere as an evil sorceress who tries to kill our hero, who had become king after taking down the previous ruler. Hijinx, as they say, ensued. No surprise that they’re trying to reboot “Kull”, considering that the first movie went mostly unnoticed despite getting a major studio release, so there isn’t really any prejudices against a remake. Plus, with “Conan” set to get rebooted from director Marcus Nispel, this is the perfect time to remind people that before he created Conan, writer Robert E. Howard created Kull. »

'Kull The Conqueror' To Return To The Big Screen

23 November 2009 7:30 AM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Robert E. Howard’s “Kull" may get another chance to conquer the silver screen.

According to a report on Fantasy.fr, Paradox Entertainment CEO Fredrik Malmberg has confirmed that a new adaptation of “Kull The Conqueror” is in the works. Paradox is also producing a new “Conan” film, based on Howard’s more famous creation.

First created by Howard in 1929, Kull was an exiled warrior in pre-cataclysmic Atlantis who became a pirate, a mercenary, a gladiator and ultimately a King. In the chronology of Howard’s stories, Kull lived approximately eight thousand years before Conan.

In 1997, a previous adaptation of “Kull The Conqueror” by director John Nicolella was released in theaters with Kevin Sorbo (“Hercules: The Legendary Journeys”) in the title role. However, the film failed to find an audience due in part to its inconsistent tone and the lighter touch it brought to the material.

‘Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune’ Movie Finds New Writers

23 November 2009 4:43 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

The good folks over at Latino Review have the scoop on an update for the film adaptation for the successful and critically acclaimed video game, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.

As it turns out, Kyle Ward, the man originally hired to pen the script has been dropped by Sony due to his contractual obligations to other projects (Hitman 2, Kane & Lynch). Sony wasn’t interested in delaying or waiting so they’ve brought in the pair of writers behind the Conan reboot: Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer.

As any aware gamer knows, Uncharted and its sequel are developed Naughty Dog, and published by Sony Computer Entertainment only for PlayStation 3.

To find out more about the game and this film project, head over to Game Rant.

What do you think about the potential for this movie?

Conan Screenwriters Board Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune

23 November 2009 12:45 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

You might remember back in June that Sony hired a screenwriter, Kyle Ward, to develop a film based on the PlayStation 3 game Uncharted: Drake's Fortune.  Our friends at LatinoReview are now reporting that Kyle's deal fell apart at the last minute because Sony were unwilling to wait around, possibly as long as a year, as Ward was contractually obligated to pen Hitman 2. They have instead hired the writing team Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer, whose screenwriting credits include Sahara, the horrible adaptation of A Sound of Thunder, and the upcoming Dylan Dog adaptation Dead of Night and the Marcus Nispel remake of Conan. Donnelly and Oppenheimer's produced projects aren't too impressive, but they must have impressed someone to get attached to Conan and now the fast tracked video game adaptation Drake's Fortune. Karl "Bones" Urban on Star Trek 2

20 November 2009 11:40 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

After a notable role as Eomer in the second and third chapters in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Karl Urban went on to star in the ill-fated Pathfinder, Marcus Nispel's Vikings-versus-Native Americans action film.

Urban followed up his little-seen Pathfinders starring role with the supporting role of Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy in J.J. Abrams' revamped Star Trek, a role that promised to put him back in the spotlight. However, Abrams' film focused primarily on the relationship between James T. Kirk (played by Chris Pine) and Spock (Zachary Quinto), rather than on the the Kirk-Spock-Bones trinity that served as the basis for the original series. In a recent interview with IGN, Urban said that he hopes that his role gets beefed up for Star Trek 2, if only to pay homage to the original.

The structure [of the new film] wasn't really the traditional triumvirate that you've seen on the television show. »

The Next Friday The 13th May Finish Jason

13 November 2009 12:16 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

It was no surprise that Marcus Nispel's Friday The 13th was a disaster. After all, it was a) a remake, b) a mainstream horror film and c) produced by Michael Bay. Despite only making $65 million domestically and plummeting more than 80% in its second week, a sequel is already slated for an August release next year. To quote Kevin Smith, "In Hollywood, you just kind of fail upwards." The sequel will be the 13th film featuring the character, but if the most recent reports can be trusted, the hockey-mask wearing serial killer might be getting put down for good. Spoilers! Pajiba has reported that sequel writers Damian Shannon and Mark Swift have been tasked with ending Jason Voorhees' reign of terror once and for all by killing him off and ending the franchise for good. No more slaughters at Camp Crystal Lake, no more trips down to hell, no more »

'300' FX Team Joins 'Conan'

12 November 2009 7:31 AM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

As “Conan” gets closer to making his return to the big screen, two of the top FX alumni from Zack Snyder’s “300” adaptation have joined the project.

Shaun Smith has signed on as a creature designer on “Conan” and Scott Wheeler will head up the makeup department. In addition to their time on “300”, Smith created makeup FX for “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” and “The Forbidden Kingdom” while Wheeler has worked extensively on two “Star Trek” movies, “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” and Joss Whedon’s upcoming film “The Cabin in the Woods.”

"As you might expect I really can't say much except it looks really cool and we are excited to be a part of it," Smith related to Mania.com. “Conan” is expected to begin filming in Bulgaria next February.

Dolph Lundgren ponders role in mythical Conan reboot

10 November 2009 12:20 PM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

Dolph Lundgren is cool. I don’t care how many direct-to-dvd movies he does a month, Lundgren is a complete bad-ass. So much of a bad-ass in fact that Lundgren might show up in the highly-rumored Conan reboot.

“I’ve talked to the producers about doing something for Conan,’” Lundgren said. “It’s too early,” he said, stating that he wouldn’t know anything certain until “probably next year.”

The updated Conan will directed by Marcus Nispel for Lionsgate. The reboot is expected to more faithful to Robert E. Howard’s Conan the Barbarian than the Arnold Schwarzenegger films were.

Lundgren will be seen in Sylvester Stallone’s action-ensemble pic, The Expendables, where the 52-year-old will play a Swedish sniper named Gunnar Jensen. The film is expected to be released on August 20th.

Conan the Barbarian was released in 1982 from director John Milius. Milius later went to direct Red Dawn. »

Conan Cameo For Dolph Lundgren?

10 November 2009 11:44 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

The man responsible for the terror that was Captain Ivan Drago in Rocky IV and the joy that was He-Man in Masters of the Universe revealed to MTV that he’s in talks for an unnamed part in the upcoming Conan reboot.  Lundgren caught MTV New’s attention with this little ditty:

“I’ve talked to the producers about doing something for Conan

As to whether anything was definite, the man went on to say:

“It’s too early”

Regarding a question about when he might know for sure, he responded:

“probably next year”

He-Man need not go on.

Lundgren will also be appearing in the upcoming Sly Stallone-directed mercenary flick, The Expendables, which has the same production team as Conan. He-Man can network.

The new Conan is to be directed by Marcus Nispel (who replaced Brett Ratner) and penned by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer.  Nispel helmed Friday the 13th »

Dolph Lundgren Could Be Headed to Conan

10 November 2009 6:19 AM, PST | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

He-Man.  Ivan Drago.  The first Frank Castle.  Gr-13.  Whatever you call him, there is no denying how bad-ass Dolph Lundgren is, and, it seems, the world is beginning to realize this fact more and more in recent days.  While it isn’t revealed who he might be playing, Lundgren may be stepping into the world of Conan, as well.

I’ve talked to the producers about doing something for Conan.

Lundgren told this to MTV while out promoting his latest film (co-wrote, stars and directs) Command Performance.  Lundgren explained that casting was still underway, and a final decision wouldn’t be made until sometime in 2010.  The lead role hasn’t even been cast yet.

Marcus Nispel is directing the film, which is being reported as following closer to Robert E. Howard’s vision of the story than the John Milius-directed film.  Not knowing much about the original, Conan universe, »

Dolph Lundgren May Get Small Role in Conan Remake

10 November 2009 4:28 AM, PST | FusedFilm | See recent FusedFilm news »

MTV News caught up with Dolph Lundgren who said that he is talking to producers of Conan and might be making an appearance in the reboot.

“I’ve talked to the producers about doing something for ‘Conan,’” Lundgren said, as he cautioned that casting is still going on and whether there is a role for him at all likely wouldn’t be decided until 2010…It’s too early,” he said, explaining that he didn’t expect to know more until “probably next year.”

Directed by Marcus Nispel, the Lionsgate film is based on Robert E. Howard’s mythical conqueror Conan the Barbarian. The new version is expected to be more faithful to Howard’s original creation than were the Arnold Schwarzenegger films.

I have been weary about this film from the start only because I love Schwarzenegger’s original so much. Secondly the plot of the film really didn’t get me going. »
