Movie Review: “Sherlock Holmes”

26 December 2009 5:44 PM, PST | screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news »

Seen on: December 21, 2009

The players: Director: Guy Ritchie, Writers: Michael Robert Johnson, Simon Kinberg, Anthony Peckham, Cast: Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Rachel McAdams, Mark Strong, Eddie Marsan

Facts of interest: Ritchie's first PG-13 film.

The plot: Sherlock Holmes heads out to hunt down and arrest Blackwood, who plans to murder all of London's politicians.

Our thoughts: Although far from a cinematic masterpiece, Guy Ritchie’s reimagining of “Sherlock Holmes” boasts a lot of big-screen fun. It’s a relatively fast-paced crime adventure stuffed with decent humor, and while the amusing story certainly helps boost the film’s entertainment value, the real reason this thing works so well is Robert Downey Jr. »

Review: Sherlock Holmes

24 December 2009 11:30 AM, PST | Slackerwood | See recent Slackerwood news »

What do you get when Guy Ritchie directs a film about Sir Arthur Conan Doyle characters? Something that doesn't much resemble the work of either artist, in the case of the new movie Sherlock Holmes.

After solving a shocking mystery, the self-indulgent and manipulative Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.) is sulking for lack of a case and the impending move of his best friend and roommate with Dr. John Watson (Jude Law). Their bromance is threatened not only by the resurgence of the case, but a future fiancée and a returning lover/nemesis.

Sherlock Holmes is gritty, pretty and devoid of much substance, focusing instead on the flash and deception the villain in the film uses to pass as magic as tattered as Holmes's smoking jacket. Much the same can be said about the original script from Michael Robert Johnson, Anthony Peckham and Simon Kinberg

Sherlock Holmes Movie Review

24 December 2009 12:00 AM, PST | movies.about.com | See recent movies.about.com news »

Guy Ritchie shows us a Sherlock Holmes who's not only a super-sleuth but also a super-brawler in 2009's Sherlock Holmes. With Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr in the title role, this most definitely isn't your mother's Sherlock Holmes. It's not stately or subdued, and this Holmes seems more at home in a boxing ring than in a drawing room amongst the upper-crust of society. Ritchie and screenwriters Michael Robert Johnson, Anthony Peckham and Simon Kinberg give us a Holmes who likes to get his hands dirty, a Holmes who uses his fists and fighting skills as effectively as he uses his analytical skills. Exclusive Interview: Producer Dan Lin on Sherlock Holmes; Plus he Addresses the Brad Pitt Rumors

23 December 2009 10:12 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

With Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes about to get released, it’s time for the final segment of “7 Days with Producer Dan Lin”.  Over the past week we’ve covered all the various projects Lin is developing like the Lego movie and Gangster Squad, his thoughts on the Terminator Salvation ending and what’s up with future movies, what’s up with Bone and Tom and Jerry,  and yesterday was  about the Justice League movie, Suicide Squad, and Stephen King’s It.  But for tonight’s article, we finally get to the reason I got to speak with him in the first place: Sherlock Holmes.

As I have said many times, I loved the film.  It’s got a great script. Fantastic performances from everyone involved.  Amazing chemistry between Jude Law and Downey Jr.. A third act that doesn’t suck.  Action scenes that sell why Sherlock Holmes is Sherlock Holmes. »

'X-Men: First Class' Will Use Some of 'Magneto' Story

22 December 2009 12:58 AM, PST | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Bryan Singer has shared some information about the idea of his upcoming movie project "X-Men: First Class". Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter on the phone, the helmer has revealed that the next installment of "X-Men" film franchise will include some parts of "Magneto" story and might supersede the film about the super-powered villain.

"This story would probably utilize some of the Magneto story because it deals with a young Magneto," he stated. Singer then went on explaining, "It might supersede that because this would explore that relationship between a young energetic professor [Xavier] and a disenfranchised victim of the Holocaust."

Previously, Singer has told Variety that "First Class" will revolve around "the formative years of Xavier and Magneto, and the formation of the school and where their relationship took a wrong turn". Moreover, the filmmaker teased, "There is a romantic element, and some of the mutants from 'X-Men' will figure into the plot, »

Bryan Singer to lead ‘X-Men: First Class’

20 December 2009 12:31 PM, PST | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

X-Men and X2 director Bryan Singer is set to helm another movie about the mutant superheroes. Entitled X-Men: First Class, the film will show the beginnings of Xavier and Magneto, with them as friendly twenty-somethings.

“This is the formative years of [the characters], and the formation of the school and where the relationship took a wrong turn,” said Singer. “There is a romantic element, and some of the mutants from X-Men will figure into the plot, though I don’t want to say which ones. There will be a lot of mutants and a great villain.”

“Whether it’s ‘Batman,’ ‘Lord of the Rings’ or ‘Star Trek,’ if the characters are good, you want to see them on their journey even if you know their destiny,” said Singer. “I put myself in the fan’s position, and I think this story is something I would want to see, and so will they. »

Singer Attending "X-Men: First Class"

19 December 2009 5:40 AM, PST | SneakPeek | See recent SneakPeek news »

Director Bryan "Superman Returns" Singer will take on the Fox feature "X-Men: First Class" for producers Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg, based on a script treatment Singer wrote for the film.

Screenplay is by Jamie Moss.

In Toronto, Singer directed Fox' first "X-Men" film in 2000. Two subsequent "X-Men" sequels were filmed in Vancouver.

"X-Men: First Class" will focus on the back-story of the famous Marvel Comics' mutant super-hero team, during their formative years, revolving around 20-something "X-Men" mutant leader 'Xavier' and his nemesis, 'evil' mutant 'Magneto', revealing how their relationship took a 'wrong turn', to the detriment of mankind.

Singer also confirmed there will be a romantic element, with some of the original mutants from the "X-Men" team entering into the scheme of things, as well as 'new mutants' and a new villain.

Fox continues to develop a dedicated feature revolving around "Magneto", a sequel to "Wolverine »

New writer hired to join Bryan Singer on X-Men: First Class

18 December 2009 5:17 PM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

There have been further developments in the news that Bryan Singer is returning to 20th Century Fox for another X-Men movie.

Singer yesterday sealed a deal to helm origin flick X-Men: First Class, which had a screenplay by Gossip Girl creator Josh Schwartz and takes its title from the First Class comic books depicting the mutant team in their teenage years.

There were behind-the-scenes whispers about bringing in new writing talent and it's now been revealed that Fox has hired scribe Jamie Moss to work with Singer on the project.

Moss worked on Ghost in the Shell for DreamWorks and wrote Street Kings, the crime drama directed by David Ayer.

Singer told Variety: "This is the formative years of Xavier and Magneto, and the formation of the school and where their relationship took a wrong turn.

Singer Snags a Writer for X-Men: First Class

18 December 2009 9:10 AM, PST | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

With former X-Men director Bryan Singer officially confirmed to helm X-Men: First Class, the only question now is: who will write it? According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fox is looking at Jamie Moss (Street Kings) to pen the script with Singer. The movie will follow the founding of the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning as well as its first class of mutants. Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg are set to produce. However, there's still no word on who these mutants will be and whether X-Men: First Class will fit in as a prequel to the current X-Men movies, or kick-off a whole new X-Men movie universe. After all, while the original X-Men team in the comics (and the 2006-07 X-Men: First Class series) had Iceman and Angel fighting alongside Cyclops, Beast, and Jean Grey as their contemporaries, the movies turned Iceman into a classmate of Rogue's and Angel into »

Singer Talks More "X-Men: First Class"

18 December 2009 7:25 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Following his news at the "Avatar" premiere the other day that he's returning to the "X-Men" filled, director Bryan Singer tells Variety that the decision was one he thought long and hard about, ultimately agreeing when he found a storyline that interested him enough.

"This is the formative years of Xavier and Magneto, and the formation of the school and where there relationship took a wrong turn. There is a romantic element, and some of the mutants from 'X-Men' will figure into the plot, though I don't want to say which ones. There will be a lot of new mutants and a great villain" says Singer of the project entitled "X-Men: First Class".

Xavier and Magneto in the film are likely to be played by younger actors portraying the characters in their 20's/30's, which means many of the mutants from the "X-Men" films will simply be too young to appear. »

8 Movie Clips from Sherlock Holmes Starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law

14 December 2009 12:57 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

With director Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes getting released on Christmas Day, Warner Bros. has just released eight clips from the movie.  While I always post whatever clips I’m given from the studios, I’m actually going to recommend not watching the clips.  The reason is, the less you see from the movie, the more you’re going to enjoy it.  When I went into the press screening last week, I had only seen the trailer, so I was able to watch the movie without knowing what was going to happen.  I strongly recommend doing the same thing as Sherlock Holmes is an awesome, fun adventure that I think everyone is going to love.

As I said when I posted the 37 images a few days ago:  Even though I love to nitpick movies, this is one of the rare films that I walked out completely satisfied.  Great script. Fantastic performances from everyone involved. »

37 High Resolution Images from Sherlock Holmes. Plus Steve Says the Film is Great

11 December 2009 9:38 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

While Warner Bros. released the final batch of images from Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes yesterday, due to being in London covering the Avatar premiere last night, I’m a bit late posting them.  But while I may be a bit behind, I have another reason for posting the images today…I wanted to say what I thought about Sherlock Holmes as I saw the film and loved it.  While I was nervous about Robert Downey Jr.’s accent, I couldn’t have been more wrong.  Not only does he sound the part, he’s absolutely kick started the Holmes franchise and I would be shocked if they aren’t making a sequel as soon as possible.

Also, even though I love to nitpick movies, this is one of the rare films that I walked out completely satisfied.  Great script. Fantastic performances from everyone involved.  Amazing chemistry between Jude Law and Downey Jr. »

X2 scribe Michael Dougherty details his vision for X-Men 3

9 November 2009 4:59 PM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Screenwriter Michael Dougherty has given more details about the ideas he had suggested to Bryan Singer for the third X-Men movie.

Dougherty co-wrote Singer's highly-regarded X2: X-Men United with Dan Harris before all three left the mutant movie series to make Superman Returns.

Fox then hired writers Zak Penn and Simon Kinberg and director Brett Ratner and the result was 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand.

A year ago, I reported on a book called Mutant Cinema: The X-Men Trilogy From Comics to Screen, which included some of Dougherty's ideas for an alternative version of the third film. (Click here to read that earlier article).

Now, in a new interview on Slashfilm to promote the DVD and Blu-ray release of Halloween-themed anthology Trick 'r Treat (pictured), his first directing effort, Dougherty has elaborated on what he wanted to do in the third X-movie had he stayed with the franchise. He speaks on a podcast, »
