Swarez's Top Ten of 2009

31 December 2009 7:06 AM, PST | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

My list consists of some studio products, festival favorites and a few that deserve a wider audience.Happy New Year yall!

Van Diemen's Land

The first film I saw at this year's Fantastic Fest and the one I think stuck with me the most. The depute feature from Jonathan auf der Heide tells the story of a group of prisoners stuck on the island of Tasmania, known then as Van Diemen's Land. They escape from their captors and venture in to the vast wilderness of the island which was probably not the best idea they ever had. Based on a true story the film is a tour de force in both performance and visual terms. If Terence Malick ever made a cannibal movie then this would be it.

District 9

Another feature depute from a young genius but this time aided with considerable more funds and the guiding hand of one Peter Jackson. »

Ari Lehman's Festival de Cine de Terror de Molins de Rei Journal

14 December 2009 2:50 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Much as we'd like to, we can't always get to Every festival that happens. That's why we have friends like Ari Lehman, who travels extensively and who can bring us a blow-by-blow of the events as they happened. Here, then, is Ari's exclusive journal from his recent trip to Spain, where his band, First Jason, played the Festival de Cine de Terror de Molins de Rei, which is a really long name for one hell of a festival dedicated to horror movies and music. So without further ado...

Firstjason Festival de Cine de Terror de Molins de Rei Journal

Day 1 -

As we looked out of the airplane window, Barcelona lay sprawled out before us like an overflowing Pirate's chest that had been tipped into the shiny blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea. I looked up to the north where I saw a dark, craggy mountaintop looming in the distance. »

Casting News: Rashida Jones Gets Social, Langella is Unknown

9 December 2009 8:54 AM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Two bit of casting news this week: Rashida Jones, the charming and delightful co-star of NBC’s “The Office”, has landed a role in David Fincher’s social networking movie called, well, “Social Network”. She joins a cast that includes Justin Timberlake and Jesse Eisenberg, and revolves around the founders of the social-networking website Facebook and their less-than-amicable split. Aaron Sorkin wrote the script, with Fincher directing. Over at thriller land, Frank Langella, fresh off freaking people in “The Box”, has joined the international thriller “Unknown White Male”. He joins Liam Neeson, January Jones and Diane Kruger in the film, which will star Neeson as a man who awakens from a coma to find somebody else has assumed his identity. Langella will play Cole, who comes forward as the coma guy’s colleague and gets involved as he tries to reclaim his identity. Shooting on “Unknown White Male” is expected »

Frank Langella has signed on to star opposite Liam Neeson, Diane Kruger, and January Jones in the Jaume Collet-Serra-directed thriller Unknown White Male, according to Variety.

The script is based on the Didier Van Cauwelaert novel Hors de moi (Out of My Head) and tells the story of a man (Neeson) who wakes from a coma following a car accident. Both Kruger and Langella will portray characters that help the protagonist in his quest to recover his identity and his relationship with his wife.

Langella Continues Genre Work in Unknown White Male

8 December 2009 8:12 AM, PST | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

I have always been a fan of Frank Langella.  He was in one of my guilty pleasures as a horror fan, Brainscan.  Go ahead, judge me.

From the Variety article:

Frank Langella has been set to star with Liam Neeson, January Jones and Diane Kruger in Unknown White Male, the Dark Castle thriller.

Neeson plays a man who awakens from a coma to find somebody else has assumed his identity. Langella plays Cole, who comes forward as the coma guy’s colleague and gets involved as he tries to reclaim his identity.

Shooting starts January in Berlin, with Warner Bros. distributing. Joel Silver produces with Leonard Goldberg and Andrew Rona. Steve Richards, Sarah Meyer and Peter McAleese are exec producers.

One thing that the article doesn’t mention is that Jaume Collet-Serra (Orphan & House Of Wax) will be directing his third film for Dark Castle Films.

Frank Langella is an ‘Unknown White Male’

8 December 2009 7:42 AM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

Frank Langella is one of those guys who can be effortlessly good in any role he picks out of a hat, just like his co-star in Frost/Nixon, Michael Sheen. Sheen will have his New Moons and his Underworlds, Langella will have his Superman Returns and Small Soldiers variety of roles, but they’ll both be great through and through.

Will Dark Castle’s thriller Unknown White Male, starring Liam Neeson, Inglourious BasterdsDiane Kruger, and now Langella be a Frost/Nixon or disposable dreck? Who cares when you have a cast like this?

Jaume Collet-Serra’s film, which starts production in Berlin next month, will be centered on Neeson, who “plays a man who awakens from a coma to find somebody else has assumed his identity. Langella plays Cole, who comes forward as the coma guy’s colleague and gets involved as he tries to reclaim his identity.”

DVD review: Orphan

26 November 2009 4:05 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Optimum, rental and retail

Has any nice couple in a film ever adopted a sweet, charming child and had everything go just swimmingly? I can't recall any, but few parents have had such a vengeful cuckoo in the nest as Isabelle Fuhrman's Esther. There's nothing wildly different here from umpteen bythe-numbers horror films, but Catalan director Jaume Collet-Serra has superior acting, memorable snowbound settings and a whopper of a twist on his side. In particular, Vera Farmiga, put through the wringer here as she was in The Boy in Striped Pyjamas, is expert at empathetic, anguished motherhood and 12-year-old Fuhrman, appropriately disturbing in the difficult, key role, is outstanding in a rather superior horror film.

2nd Joel Silver Interview Ninja Assassin. Plus Info on Dark Castle Projects, Remakes, Sherlock Holmes, More

24 November 2009 8:49 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

At last weekend’s press junket for Ninja Assassin, I had the opportunity to speak with producer Joel Silver twice.  The first time was an exclusive TV interview, and the second time was during a roundtable interview the following day.  While I normally would be happy to use just one of the interviews, since Joel Silver is producing so many high profile projects (Lobo, Sgt. Rock, The Apparition), I knew getting to speak with him twice would be a good thing.

Also, what a lot of people don’t realize is how much info a producer can tell you.  While it’s always great to talk with an actor, unless you’re a Brad Pitt, most actors don’t have that much juice to get a project made.  So that’s why getting to speak with Joel Silver is so great, because not only can he talk about all his projects that are getting made, »

Orphan: Who’s a good girl, then?

20 November 2009 6:09 AM, PST | t5m.com | See recent t5m.com news »

Jaume Collet-Serra's horror/thriller Orphan certainly treads familiar territory. Imperfect parents Kate (Vera Farmiga) and John (Peter Sarsgaard) head off to the local orphanage to adopt a brother or sister for their two children. With Kate's recent still birth and bouts of alcoholism and infidelity playing heavily in the backstory the pair settle, as much as you don't want them too, on the obviously odd, charming and artistic Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman), a freaky eyed 12 year old Russian girl who insists on wearing vintage dresses. Mistake number one. Max, the couple's hearing impaired youngest daughter takes to Esther immediately. She bizarrely picks up sign language in a matter of days. Oldest boy and Guitar Hero addict Daniel isn't too impressed however and before long Esther's cutsie little girl routine begins to slip. Soon enough it's visits to the shirk and mind games with mummy and daddy galore and when young »

Blu-Ray Review: Underrated ‘Orphan’ Deserved Better Blu-Ray

5 November 2009 8:25 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – “Orphan” is a surprisingly effective thriller that delivers exactly what audiences should expect from it. This is B-movie filmmaking elevated by A-list actors Vera Farmiga and Peter Sarsgaard in a clever mix of honest emotion and ridiculous, over-the-top, “Mommie Dearest”-esque insanity. The film deserved a better Blu-Ray release.

Blu-Ray Rating: 3.0/5.0

In theaters, some questioned whether or not the more ridiculous moments in “Orphan” were meant to be played for laughs or horror. I honestly don’t care. Movies are enjoyable for what they are, not what they mean to be. And I enjoyed “Orphan”. It runs way too long and features lot twists that stretch credulity but it is as genuinely intriguing and entertaining as any of the adult thrillers released this past summer.

Orphan was released on DVD, Blu-Ray, On Demand and Digital Download on October 27th, 2009.

The Blu-Ray Review: Orphan

31 October 2009 2:09 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Colin Jacobson reviews Orphan on Bd.

While not as prolific a horror subject as zombies or vampires, creepy kids have been a genre standby for decades. We get a new entry in that field via 2009's Orphan.

When her pregnancy results in miscarriage, Kate Coleman (Vera Farmiga) suffers from nightmares and various psychological concerns. Though somewhat reticent, she and husband John (Peter Sarsgaard) decide to adopt a child to add to their existing brood of Maxine (Aryana Engineer) and Daniel (Jimmy Bennett).

They choose Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman), a rather prim and proper but nonetheless sweet, charming little girl. She immediately hits it off with hearing impaired Max, but Daniel becomes jealous of all the attention his new sister receives. They become rivals, and Esther also runs into mockery and disdain at school.

None of this ends well for the parties who cross Esther. Not that things go much better for »
