If you've been following Film Junk at all over the past couple of years, you probably saw this coming. We were all blown away by this movie last year for a variety of reasons, and now it's time to make it official: by a collective vote, The Wrestler is our #1 Film of the Decade. I've been thinking about how to justify such a title, especially after counting down through so many other great films this month. The Wrestler did not use any innovative new technology or groundbreaking techniques. It did not inspire a wave of copycat films (Crazy Heart notwithstanding). It did not win any Oscars. It was not particularly timely or relevant to specific events in the '00s. In fact, it was mostly the opposite of all these things: a simple yet timeless character study with quiet emotional power, easily overlooked due to the strange title and subject matter. »

If this year's Gotham Awards winner is any indication, A Serious Man might be in serious trouble with its Oscar chances as Kathryn Bigelow's The Hurt Locker appears to be the "preferred" independent film of the year. - If this year's Gotham Awards winner is any indication, A Serious Man might be in serious trouble with its Oscar chances as Kathryn Bigelow's The Hurt Locker appears to be the "preferred" independent film of the year. The Coen Bros. film lost out in the Best Feature and Best Ensemble categories, but I'm really curious in seeing how this all plays out in the next couple of weeks with the New York based film critics' year end kudos. Although the nominees for the Academy Awards won't be announced until sometime next year, a few of the other award ceremonies are already in full swing including the Independent Spirit Awards, which recognize the best films shot for $20 million or less. This year's Spirit Award nominees were announced earlier today, and I think there are definitely some interesting choices. First off, the big one that everyone is picking up on is the fact that Paranormal Activity was nominated for Best First Feature. And why shouldn't it be? The Blair Witch Project won the exact same award back in 2000. Anvil! The Story of Anvil has been redeemed somewhat for the Oscar snub by getting a nod here for Best Documentary, and surprisingly, Jemaine Clement picked up a nomination for Best Supporting Actor in Gentlemen Broncos. Other than that, some of the movies that scored multiple nominations include Precious, (500) Days of Summer, »

Not half an hour after The Hurt Locker won the Best Feature prize at last night's Gotham Independent Film Awards, hordes of awardgoers trekked from Cipriani Wall Street to the Kodak/indieWIRE afterparty at the Tribeca Cinemas. Free liquor still being one of life's great social lubricants, even those who headed to the party empty-handed were in pleasant spirits when I asked about their favorite films of 2009—Gothams-related or otherwise:
"Fantastic Mr. Fox was hand-made and the kind of care that goes in with that feels intimate. It's impossible to fake. Wes Anderson always has that ability to bring you into a world that you think you know but don't, and allows you an invitation. I haven't had more fun in the movies in a while."

In case you missed the live-Tweeting and live-blogging from last night's Gotham Independent Awards at NYC's Cipriani, we're here to help. Indie favorite The Hurt Locker took home the two big awards, Best Feature and Best Ensemble Performance, although The Maid's Catalina Saavedra snagged the award for Best Breakthrough Actor, beating out The Hurt Locker's Jeremy Renner, Ben Foster (The Messenger), Patton Oswalt (Big Fan), and Souleymane Sy Savane (Goodbye Solo). Robert Siegel, who also wrote The Wrestler and wrote and directed Big Fan, snatched the Breakthrough Director award from The Hurt Locker's Kathryn Bigelow and the Coens.
Meanwhile, the stomach-churningly fascinating Food Inc. won best doc for its close look at how what's on our plates really got there, and how big biz helped (or harmed, as the case may be). And the Best Film Not Playing at a Theater Near You award went to You Wont Miss Me, »

Photo: Summit Entertainment I can see the folks in the Summit offices right now, patting themselves on the back for picking up The Hurt Locker and now watching as it picks up Best Feature and Best Ensemble Performance awards at the 19th Annual Gotham Independent Film Awards. They can celebrate the fact they hardly distributed the film into a grand total of 535 theaters and didn't market the film as it managed to make $1.2 million less than their loathed 3-D animated film Fly Me to the Moon. After all, they're floating around over there on a river of Twilight cash, a film series that can't manage to win over critics who would much rather praise a fan favorite feature than pan it. But who cares? Hot Topic is stocked with a battle of t-shirts pitting Team Edward vs. Team Jacob and now the company can claim ownership of Venice Film Festival Gucci Prize winner, »

Kathryn Bigelow's expertly told and thrillingly taut war drama The Hurt Locker took the top prize at the Gotham Awards tonight. Does this bode well for Oscar? No one can yet say but its loyal fanbase certainly can't hurt. Even if I didn't love the movie as much as I do, I'd be proud of it because I admire longevity when it comes to awardage and the movie has been out for months. In fact, it's now been a factor in two awards seasons (it had Indie Spirit nominations last year). Career tributes for actors Stanley Tucci and Natalie Portman, director Kathryn Bigelow and producers Tim Bevan & Eric Fellner were also part of the ceremony.
And the 6 winners were...
Best Feature The Hurt Locker
Best Documentary Food Inc.
Breakthrough Director Robert D. Siegel Big Fan
(Siegel broke out just last year as the screenwriter of The Wrestler)
