- Quick Links The Departed United 93 Half Nelson Pretty ironic the Boston Society of Film Critics would be such big fans of The Departed (wicked obvious, no?). The film received top honors in the 25th aniversary of the Bsfc Awards. Their most recent winners of the past have been Brokeback Mounatin (2005), Sideways (2004), and Mystic River (2003). Formed in an attempt to showcase "Boston's unique critical perspective heard on a national and international level by awarding commendations to the best of the year's films and filmmakers," the Bsfc also really liked the indie underdogs United 93 and Half Nelson. Here are the complete list of 2006 winners: Best Picture: The Departed United 93, runner-up Best Director: Martin Scorsese, The Departed Paul Greengrass, United 93, runner-up Best Actor: Forest Whitaker, The Last King of Scotland Ryan Gosling, Half Nelson, runner-up Best Actress: Helen Mirren, The Queen Judi Dench, Notes on a Scandal, runner-up Best Supporting Actor: Mark Wahlberg, »

Budget drug-addiction drama Half Nelson was a triple winner at this year's Gotham Awards, scooping prizes for Best Feature, Breakthrough Director and Breakthrough Actor. Despite stiff competition from big studio-financed films including The Departed and Marie Antoinette, the $1 million movie dominated the New York ceremony on Wednesday night honoring independent film-making. Host David Cross slammed the inclusion of its big-budget rivals, insisting, "We're here to celebrate the films that show you don't need a big studio, films with an untested director and cast - films like The Departed. How that got greenlit I have no idea." Despite the scathing comments, the $25 million Brad Pitt-starring Babel won the Best Ensemble Cast award, and its star Rinko Kikuchi shared the Breakthrough Actor award with Shareeka Epps of Half Nelson. Oscar-short listed Iraq In Fragments took home the Best Documentary prize. »

- THINKFilm has not only got a winner on its hands â. but may we dare say - its got the sort of potential that might see it cross into the mainstream golden evening of the award season â. yep the Oscars might not look unattainable as I had first predicted. Given out last night, the Independent Film Project awards were prety much a Half Nelson tribute type of affair - winning in the breakthrough actor, director and picture categories with its closest rival being Alejandro Gonzalez Inarrituâ.s Babel which picked up 2 awards. Note: Rinko Kikuchi (the naked Jap) from Babel and the (always play the same role twice) young Shareeka Epps shared the same award. Filmmaker Amy Bergâ.s Deliver Us from Evil - a doc that unfortunately in my area spent very little time in theatres around my neighborhood lost out to the little seen Iraq in Fragments by James Longley. »

Quirky road movie Little Miss Sunshine and classroom drama Half Nelson will lead all contenders at the Spirit Awards in February after picking up five nominations apiece yesterday. The two films will compete with American Gun, The Dead Girl and Mexican movie Pan's Labyrinth for the Best Film prize, while Little Miss Sunshine's Alan Arkin and Paul Dano are both nominated for Best Supporting Actor honors. Ryan Gosling will compete for the Best Actor prize for his portrayal of a teacher with a drug problem in Half Nelson. Gosling's co-star Shareeka Epps is also nominated for Best Actress. Maverick filmmaker Robert Altman, who died last week, earned a Best Director nomination for his final film, A Prairie Home Companion, while new 007, Daniel Craig, is also among the Spirit Supporting Actor nominees for his portrayal of a murderer in drama Infamous. - Quick Links > Ryan Fleck > Half Nelson > Ryan Gosling > Official Trailer > It's Kind of a Funny Story Ryan Gosling (The Believer, The Notebook) gives a tour de force performance as Dan Dunne, an inner city middle school history teacher and girls basketball coach battling the demons of his past, present, and future that have manifested themselves into a serious dependency on drugs and alcohol. The title of the film is Half Nelson, a term borrowed from the world of professional wrestling—a “half nelson” is a hold which is nearly impossible to break free from. Half Nelson marks the feature narrative debut from filmmaking team Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (both write, he directs, she edits), who have previously collaborated on Jovenes Rebeldes (Young Rebels), a feature length documentary about Cuban hip-hop groups, and numerous short projects, including the 20-minute Gowanus, Brooklyn (a condensed shot-on-video version of Half Nelson »

- Epilogue: Favorite flicks I’m happy to report that many of the features that were selected for Sundance (and which I happened to have caught) were indeed great films, but those that left me truly smitten were a select few. Here are four of my favs which you should place on your must see lists for the coming year. 1. A Guide to Recognizing your Saints (Dramatic Competition) Dito Montiel wrote the novel, the screenplay and made his directorial debut with this autobiographical coming-of-age account which translates onto the screen as an especially profound, emotionally jarring and disjointed - sort of like the ensemble of afflicted characters. Great performances (winner of the special Jury Prize for Best Ensemble Performance), interesting visual aesthetics with an affinity towards an urban look, this reminded me of 1995’s The Basketball Diaries but with more grit and less of a romantic reflection of growing up in a tough hood. »
