The Winning Season Added to Sundance 2009 Line-Up

29 December 2008 2:04 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

It’s not unusual for last minute selections to be added to the Sundance Film Festival line-up in the weeks leading up to the Park City Festival. Last year it was Hamlet 2, and this year it is screenwriter turned director James C. Strouse’s second feature film The Winning Season (note: this news has been rumored elsewhere, but this is the first time Sundance has officially confirmed the report).

The film stars Sam Rockwell as an adult alcoholic misfit brought on to coach his local girl’s high school basketball team. Rockwell has described the movie as Bad News Bears meets Half Nelson meets Hoosiers. It’s worth mentioning that Strouse’s semi-autobiographical first screenplay Lonesome Jim involved a story line where Jim (played by Casey Affleck) has to take over his brother’s girls youth basketball team.

The film’s cast also includes Emma Roberts, Rob Corddry, Shareeka Epps and Emily Rios. »

Sundance '09 Exclusive: First Image from 'The Winning Season'

17 December 2008 4:02 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Cinematical has received this exclusive image from the film The Winning Season, which will have its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on Monday, January 19th. Directed by Jim Strouse (Lonesome Jim, Grace is Gone), The Winning Season stars Sam Rockwell as an adult misfit who's brought on to coach the local girl's high school basketball team. Also appearing in the flick, which I've heard is like Bad Santa meets The Bad News Bears, is Emma Roberts, Rob Corddry, Shareeka Epps and Emily Rios. The Winning Season was a late addition to the Sundance slate, and my friend's who've seen it vouch that it's, well, a winner. Both Strouse and Rockwell (who also stars in another Sundance film called Moon) are veterans of the fest and have had good luck in the past. I see no reason why this one won't immediately sell and hit theaters at some point next year. »

Craven Back for Additional Shooting on 25/8

11 December 2008 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

Wes Craven was back in Connecticut recently for extra shooting on Rogue Pictures' 25/8 . We received an e-mail from one local who informed us a morning commute last week was tied up because production had shifted to one highway. An industry source confirmed Craven was back behind the camera and that his latest opus is probably expected to hit theaters next fall. Starring Max Thierot, Denzel Whitaker and Shareeka Epps, 25/8 is set in the sleepy town of Riverton. Legend tells of a serial killer who swore he would return to murder the seven children born the night he died. Now, 16 years later, people are disappearing again. Has the psychopath been reincarnated as one of the seven teens, or did he survive the night he was left for dead? Only one of the kids knows the answer. »

Naomi Watts and Annette Bening have signed on to topline the drama Mother And Child. Under writer/director Rodrigo Garcia, the story follows two women - one who gave up her daughter 35 years ago and another who is looking to adopt (Kerry Washington). There's a lot more emotional complexity to the story, of course. Shareeka Epps also stars. Babel and 21 Grams director Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu will executive produce the project. Production is expected to begin early next year in and around »

Naomi Watts Is Up For Adoption

6 November 2008 5:34 AM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Shocker, guys: Alejandro Gonzales Innaritu, the director of Babel and 21 Grams, is working on another movie about interconnected lives and the high drama that results. Innaritu is only executive producing Mother and Child, but he probably made use of his Oscar-nominated past to score the ridiculously good cast for this ensemble drama: Naomi Watts and Annette Bening are headlining, with Kerry Washington and Shareeka Epps (of Half-Nelson) along as well. The director will be Rodrigo Garcia, whose first feature was the poorly received, and completely ignored, Passengers, but has also directed episodes of Six Feet Under, Big Love, and wrote, produces and directs some episode of In Treatment. Variety says the film is about a woman who gave up her daughter for adoption 35 years ago a, as well as an African-American woman trying to adopt. Yeah, the interconnected stories bit is played out, but with a cast this good, it »

Annette Bening, Naomi Watts, Kerry Washington and Shareeka Epps are set to star in Rodrigo García’s upcoming drama “Mother and Child.”

Described by Variety as a “multilayered” film, the plot centers on a woman who gave up her daughter many years ago and an African-American woman who is trying to adopt.

García, who developed most episodes of TV’s “In Treatment” and recently helmed “Passengers,” is directing his own script.

Bening was last seen in Diane English’s comedy “The Women.” Watts most recently starred in “Funny Games,” with “The International” coming up next.

As for Washington, her last film was “Lakeview Terrace.” Future projects of hers include Brian Robbins’ “A Thousand Words” and “Life Is Hot in Cracktown.”

Youngster Epps appeared in “Half Nelson” and will next star in Wes Craven’s “25/8.” »

Rodrigo Garcia to present 'Mother and Child'

6 November 2008 | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

- I’ve always wondered what kind career stock plunge occurs when a filmmaker has his latest film released with the “not screened for critics” tag. Apparently director-writer Rodrigo Garcia’s just released this weekend survivor drama-thriller Passengers has done little damage as he has just signed up for a project that will have an indie-sized budget but attract A-list talent. Variety reports that Annette Bening and Naomi Watts have signed up for leading roles and Kerry Washington and Shareeka Epps have joined Mother and Child  in supporting roles – in a former Cha Cha Cha deal project that plays on the helmer’s strengths of: mergiong ensemble sets of characters in a multi-narrative scenario as he did with Nine Lives.   Pegged to begin filming in Los Angeles next year, the script follows a woman who gave up her daughter 35 years ago and an African-American woman who is looking to adopt. »

After losing Robin Wright Penn and Brittany Robertson, Rodrigo Garcia's Mother and Child is making a comeback. Picking up Annette Bening and Naomi Watts as replacements, the project has recovered its cast.

Naomi Watts and Annette Bening for Mother and Child

Written and directed by Rodrigo Garcia, Mother and Child is a multilayered drama that follows a woman who gave up her daughter 35 years ago and an African-American woman who is looking to adopt.

So then who will play the African-American woman? Since both Watts and Bening are a bit too pasty for the gig, Kerry Washington and Shareeka Epps also star. »

24 August 2008 7:57 PM, PDT | bloody-disgusting.com | See recent Bloody-Disgusting.com news »

Although much of the following has already been reported, Wes Craven was the guest of honor at this past weekend's Festival of Fear, which took place in Toronto, Canada, thanks to Rue Morgue Magazine. At the panel, Craven revealed that he believes that Platinum Dunes is off of the A Nightmare On Elm Street remake, along with Bob Shaye. He also chatted about Last House On The Left and the state of horror today. "The film takes the point that if you have to fight the toughest person in the world you have to work 24/7 - to fight The Devil you have to work 25/8 - thats where the title came from. We shot it in the spring and summer in Conneticut, I am just very excited about it. Its a cast a basically unknowns who are terrific."
