Penguins, Nicole Kidman and Narnia – Paul Howlett picks his film highlights
Christmas Eve
(Tim Johnson, Karey Kirkpatrick, 2006) 4.25pm, BBC1
A DreamWorks animated adventure in which Rj, the cynical racoon (laconically voiced by Bruce Willis) teaches a burrowful of innocent woodland animals to forage off the waste of an encroaching housing estate rather than rely on boring old natural food, before inevitably seeing the error of his ways. Plenty of good slapstick fun for kids and cine-literate gags for adults, although it all seems a bit glib compared to Shrek and co.
(Tim Burton, Mike Johnson, 2005) 6pm, ITV1
Life, in Burton's typically weird and ghoulish fantasy, is a dull, grey affair: death is much more colourful and fun, as young Victor (voiced by Johnny Depp) discovers when he is whisked into the underworld by the maggoty Corpse Bride (Helena Bonham Carter). Trouble is, he's in love »

He used to co-head Icm's motion picture lit department until 2008 when Nicole Clemens was put in sole charge. The agency is working to "transition" his clients Len Wiseman, Stephen Moyer, Steven Seagal and Ben Barnes, which means Icm is hoping to keep all of them even though he'll be gone. Remember Jim Carrey in Liar, Liar, where he forces himself to tell the truth for 24 hours? Well, here Jim Carrey forces himself to answer yes to any request, for a year. Which is upping the ante somewhat, but doesn't make it a better film. This is a return to the manic, gurning, not-very-funny Carrey, as if The Truman Show, Eternal Sunshine etc hadn't happened. Just say no.

Opens: July 23rd 2010
Cast: Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, Zach Galifianakis, Bruce Greenwood, David Walliams
Director: Jay Roach
Summary: A renowned publisher encourages his friends to invite the most pathetic guests possible for their weekly dinner party. Just as they find the most pathetic man yet, the host is injured and ends up trapped with the man all night long.
Analysis: A remake of director Francis Veber's 1998 César award-winning "Le Diner des cons", 'Schmucks' is one of the highest profile comedies of next year with one of the strongest casts for the genre in recent memory. It also marks the return of "Austin Powers" and "Meet the Parents" helmer Jay Roach who has produced several films in recent years but hasn't directed since 2004's "Meet the Fockers".
The question now lies not in the performers or director but the material itself and whether a Gallic comedy can »

Opens: January 1st 2010
Cast: Renée Zellweger, Jodelle Ferland, Ian McShane, Bradley Cooper, Kerry O'Malley
Director: Christian Alvart
Summary: A family services social worker thinks she has seen it all until she meets her newest, most mysterious case - a troubled 10-year old girl whose parents try to kill her. The social worker decides to take her in herself until the right foster family comes along.
Analysis: Despite the presence of promising German director Christian Alvart ("Pandorum"), 'Case' has sat on a shelf since late 2006 and is finally being quietly shuffled out this year for one very good reason - it stinks. Having opened in Australia a few months back, reviewers utterly savaged the film as both incredibly dumb and utterly ludicrous. Lead star Renee Zellweger also scored personal criticism to a level rarely seen in film reviews outside of comments about Nicole Kidman's 'more alien than the »

Could the latest trend in Hollywood be rock star biopics? Well, kind of. We.ve got The Runways on the way and now there.s Killing Bono, a film based on the book Killing Bono: I Was Bono.s Doppelganger. The thing is, it depicts the band from an unusual perspective. I.ve never read the book, but after reading a handful of reviews, the general consensus seems to be that it.s less about U2 and more about author Neil McCormick.s jealousy of Bono.s success. According to Variety, the film will be .chronicling the early days of U2 from a rival band.s perspective.. Chronicles of Narnia's Ben Barnes is set to star and, based on that mini-synopsis, I.d guess he.s not playing Bono, rather McCormick. It.s also been announced that Breaking Bad.s Krysten Ritter will be co-starring as well as Charlie Cox »

If you were eying your Twitter and/or Facebook feeds last night, you probably saw nothing but comments about how crazy the Dexter finale was. Being a bit behind on this season, I've just shut out all that chatter. But it makes this morning a good time to announce that Jennifer Carpenter has joined the cast of Hungry Rabbit Jumps, alongside Nicolas Cage, Guy Pearce and January Jones. The film follows a teacher (Cage) who "joins an underground vigilante organization" after his wife (Jones) is brutalized. Carpenter will play the best friend of Cage's wife. The Roger Donaldson-directed film is in production now. [Variety] After the break, news on Killing Bono, Black Swan and the new MTV version of Teen Wolf. Krysten Ritter (Breaking Bad, Gilmore Girls, Veronica Mars) and Narnia's Ben Barnes will star in Killing Bono, a Nick Hamm film based on the book Killing Bono: I Was Bono's Doppleganger, »

Watch out, U2 fans. Breaking Bad’s Krysten Ritter has signed on for a film entitled Killing Bono, based on the book Killing Bono: I Was Bono’s Doppleganger by Neil McCormick.
While not the most eloquent title in the history of the written word, Killing Bono follows the early days of the famous band, but from the perspective of a rival band. Here’s a publisher synopsis:
“Everyone wants to be famous. But as a young punk in Dublin in the 1970s, Neil McCormick’s ambitions went way beyond mere pop stardom. It was his destiny to be a veritable Rock God. He had it all worked out: the albums, the concerts, the quest for world peace. There was only one thing he hadn’t counted on. The boy sitting on the other side of the classroom had plans of his own.
Killing Bono is a story of divergent lives. »

Disney may have jumped ship on the Narnia franchise, but 20th Century Fox had no problem picking up the C.S. Lewis series and running with it. After a lackluster showing for Prince Caspian ($420M worldwide), Fox has their work cut out for them with The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Will it be a kiddie seafaring adventure, or will the studio change affect the tone? I’m hoping for the latter, but fearing the former with these new images.
Official synopsis: This time around – Edmund and Lucy Pevensie, along with their pesky cousin Eustace Scrubb – find themselves swallowed into a painting and on to a fantastic Narnian ship headed for the very edges of the world. Joining forces once again with their royal friend Prince Caspian (Ben Barnes) and the warrior mouse Reepicheep (Eddie Izzard), they are whisked away on a mysterious mission to the Lone Islands, »

It has been awhile since we had some Narnia news but now we got some really cool production stills from Fox Walden, who is now the studio behind the series. Originally Disney held the Narnia franchise as a co-production with the Walden Media but they decided to dump the series after a mediocre performance from Prince Caspian. FoxWalden, who does a majority of the Walden Media films jumped at the chance to continue the franchise.
The movie will be release on May 7, 2010 and that is something I just do not agree with and believe is what hurt the last release for Disney. Though these are traditionally beloved books globally, I feel these are movies that serve better for winter releases because of the fantasy nature of the films but also the family market it can attract better during the holidays rather than trying to compete with the heavy duty blockbuster movies in early May. »

After kicking off principal photography in Queensland, Australia on July 27, "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" has finally lowered its anchor. A day after Thanksgiving, the crew and cast for the film were back to work to complete production of the movie.
"Today, November 27th, 2009, in Australia, is the last day of shooting 'The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader'," so read a statement posted on Chronicles of Narnia facebook page. After this, the Fox Walden's movie project will enter one year of post production before the film is released in the U.S. on December 10, 2010.
A day before, three first official pictures from "Narnia 3" have been released on the same Facebook page. One particular still exposes Georgie Henley's Lucy Pevensie on the Dawn Treader ship. Then, Ben Barnes' King Caspian and Skandar Keynes' Edmund Pevensie are featured in another image. »

The "Chronicle of Narnia" Facebook page has just debuted three brand-new images from Michael Apted's upcoming big-screen adventure "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader."
You can check out the stills above and below. The film wrapped principal photography this week down in Australia, and the release date is currently set for Dec. 10, 2010. It's the third film in the "Narnia" series.
The cast includes Ben Barnes, Skandar Keynes, Georgie Henley, Gary Sweet and Will Poulter. I'm not a big "Narnia" fan and never read the books, so I have no clue what this one's about. »

It’s been over ten months since Fox boarded the flagging Chronicles of Narnia franchise and so far news on the fate of the fantasy series has been kind of thin. You may recall that Disney abandoned the Narnia ship after Prince Caspian, the second film in the series, brought in only $400 million worldwide. That’s what’s called a disappointment in the world of Disney sequels… and a hit in the parlance of Fox. Director Michael Apted is about to wrap production on Narnia 3, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, and the studio is marking the occasion by showing off their shiny new acquisition via Facebook. Check out three brand new Dawn Treader photos after the jump.
The photos that Fox posted feature Ben Barnes as King Caspian and two of those precocious Pevensie kids - Skander Keynes as Edmund and Georgie Henley as Lucy. We also get a »

20th Century Fox has released first ever hi-res photos from “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” on the official Facebook page for the Narnia.
In The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, Lucy and Edmund Pevensie (Georgie Henley and Skandar Keynes) return to Narnia when they are pulled through a picture of a ship onto the Dawn Treader, a ship belonging to Prince Caspian (Ben Barnes). On a mission to find the Seven Lost Lords, Caspian, Edmund, Lucy and their cousin Eustace Scrubb travel through Narnia, going on several adventures along the way.
The film, which has found itself a new home at Fox since Disney dropped the option, is being directed by Michael Apted (Thunderheart, The World Is Not Enough, Amazing Grace).
“The Chronicles of Narnia 3″ hits theaters on December 10th, 2010.

Back in August, we gave you a first glimpse at the ship from the upcoming third Chronicles of Narnia installment, subtitled The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. They weren’t official pics, but rather some taken by the father of one of the bloggers at the Cleveland Point, in Australia, where the Dawn Treader (the ship that’s the focus of the third film) was being constructed.
However, the first official pics from The Voyage of the Dawn Treader appeared online recently and we have them here for your viewing pleasure. They surfaced on the film’s official Facebook page: one of them features the ship’s steering wheel (shown above), while the other two show the characters of King Caspian (played by Ben Barnes), Edmund (played by Skandar Keynes) and Lucy (played by Georgie Henley).
You’ve seen the first image above, now here are the other two. Take »
