Cristian Mungiu's 2007 film about a backstreet abortion is a social-realist tour-de-force that shines a light on the collective amnesia of those who lived through Ceauşescu-era Romania
They called it "the Romanian film" when it debuted at the 2007 Cannes film festival; a running dog from out of left-field that went on to trump its glitzier rivals even though no one could quite recall its name or who had made it. "Have you seen the Romanian film?" people would whisper inside the Palais. They might as well have been discussing a ghost.
"We'll never speak of this again," promise the characters at the end of Cristian Mungiu's taut, tight little nightmare. And although they are referring to a backstreet abortion, the director has pointed out that the line comes with a wider resonance – spotlighting the collective amnesia of those who lived through Ceauşescu-era Romania and are now keen to move on quickly, »

Penguins, Nicole Kidman and Narnia – Paul Howlett picks his film highlights
Christmas Eve
(Tim Johnson, Karey Kirkpatrick, 2006) 4.25pm, BBC1
A DreamWorks animated adventure in which Rj, the cynical racoon (laconically voiced by Bruce Willis) teaches a burrowful of innocent woodland animals to forage off the waste of an encroaching housing estate rather than rely on boring old natural food, before inevitably seeing the error of his ways. Plenty of good slapstick fun for kids and cine-literate gags for adults, although it all seems a bit glib compared to Shrek and co.
(Tim Burton, Mike Johnson, 2005) 6pm, ITV1
Life, in Burton's typically weird and ghoulish fantasy, is a dull, grey affair: death is much more colourful and fun, as young Victor (voiced by Johnny Depp) discovers when he is whisked into the underworld by the maggoty Corpse Bride (Helena Bonham Carter). Trouble is, he's in love »

Seeing as Craig has already covered State Of Play I won’t go into much detail here.
I suggest you read his detailed review and all I’m going to add is that it really is an intelligent ensemble piece that has good acting from an impressive cast.
It’s nice to see a smart American film for a change, one that actually has something to say and a message to bring across. It’s a shame that it didn’t light up the box office because it deserved success.
Definitely worth your time if you are looking for a higher level of entertainment.
State Of Play is also available on Blu-Ray
Fast & Furious
The 4th in the series reunites the original cast for more pedal to the metal action.
This time Brian O’Conner and Dominic Toretto join forces to bring an evil heroin importer to justice. »

Rewinding the past seven days of the wonderful world of independent films:
Deals. Twilight fans will have the opportunity to see Kristen Stewart in a different type of role later this year. In Udayan Prasad's The Yellow Handkerchief, based on a story by Pete Hamill, Stewart jumps into a stranger's car. She and the driver (Eddie Redmayne) are soon joined by a newly-released convict (William Hurt) as they travel through rural Louisiana toward a hoped-for reunion with the ex-con's beloved (Maria Bello). Samuel Goldwyn Films has acquired U.S. rights and is planning a theatrical release, according to indieWIRE.
Hans-Christian Schmid's legal thriller Storm will also hit theaters later this year, indieWIRE says, courtesy of Film Movement. Kerry Fox stars as a prosecutor at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in The Hague; she must convince a witness (Anamaria Marinca from 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days) to »

- More award winning Berlin film Festival pick-ups from the Film Movement folks to report on, this time they've picked up the latest from Hans-Christian Schmid (director of Requiem and writer for And Along Come Tourists). To be released in the Fall, Storm features an international cast pair of female leads in Kerry Fox (who we most recently seen in Bright Star and might remember all the way back to Shallow Grave) and one of my favorite Eastern European discoveries in Anamaria Marinca (4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days). Schmid's Storm sees Hannah Maynard (Fox), prosecutor at the International Criminal Tribunal in The Hague, is leading a trial against a former commander of the Yugoslavian National Army who is accused of the deportation and later killing of dozens of Bosnian-Muslim civilians. When a key witness commits suicide, it looks like the case will unravel, however Hannah refuses to give in. Hoping to uncover new findings, »

- IFC Films have nabbed Oliver Hirschbiegel's Five Minutes Of Heaven and are adding it to their IFC In Theatres VOD day-and-date platform this coming month of August. Previously Hirschbiegel had directed the breakout international mind-f**k hit called Das Experiment, quickly followed that up with Hitler's demise in Downfall and his first Hollywood project (The Invasion) for Warner Bros. met an unfortunate tsunami of harsh criticism and zero interest from the movie-going public. This smaller in scale drama features Liam Neeson, James Nesbitt and Anamaria Marinca (4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days) and was shown at Sundance where it picked up the World Cinema Director Award but failed to light a fire for domestic distribution rights. Based on Guy Hibbert’s screenplay about two men from the same town in Northern Ireland who find themselves on different sides of the Irish political divide. The film traces the lives of two men one a murderer, »

While Julie Delply's The Countess actually received some good words out of the Berlin International Film Festival in February a domestic studio has yet to pick it up for theatrical release as it is already planned to hit German theaters in June and, according to IMDb, Netherlands in August. However, that isn't stopping a new promo trailer for the film centered on the notorious Countess Erzebet Bathory as played by Delpy in a film she wrote and is directing from hitting the Internet. Along with Delpy the film co-stars Daniel Bruhl, Anamaria Marinca and William Hurt as Gyorgy Thurzo and tells the true story of Countess Bathory born in 1560. At the age of 14, she married a powerful warlord, 10 years her senior. Although their relationship became cold and distant she bore him four children. While he was away fighting wars, she kept up their estate with the help of her confidant, »

With the addition of the following 26 titles (14 of which have been invited), the competition section is almost completed. You'll notice the kid with wings flick Ricky by Francois Ozon that we reported on earlier. Also having it's world premier is Mitchell Lichtenstein's (Teeth) newest film Happy Tears which sounds nothing it's predecessor (a genre piece) as it's a family drama.
You can check out the list after the break.
